Military history is always a good one. I think it isn't studied enough. I know a few of my leaders didn't take the time to look at the history of our deployment locations. That provides a great window in understanding the operational environment. Another good one would be Clausewitz's On War. His discussion on the strategic concepts and overall conception of war are spot on. You just have to ignore the tactical stuff that was specific to his day.

World History, especially world history since the fall of Rome. In general, Americans suck at their own history, let alone understanding anything about what goes on or what went on before in the rest of the world. In the military today, it helps if you read the Koran and Hadith, since so much of the worlds conflicts revolve around Islam.

HISTORY. Especially military history. You will learn so much by reading about things people did that worked in combat as well as things that didn't work. You'll see what attributes the great leaders had and how we got where we are today. And of course, as the saying goes, if you fail to remember the past, you're doomed to repeat it.
