I think it isn't studied enough. I know a few of my leaders didn't take the time to look at the history of our deployment locations. That provides a great window in understanding the operational environment. Another good one would be Clausewitz's On War. His discussion on the strategic concepts and overall conception of war are spot on. In general, Americans suck at their own history, let alone understanding anything about what goes on or what went on before in the rest of the world.
