What's your opinion of crime on military bases?

Family Housing. Crime on post either in family quarters, PX, recreational centers, etc. What you have witnessed. You may know of some post being a lot worst than others.

What we have to remember is that the military is a cross section of society so any problems the civilians have will also occur on post/base.

I was against it before I was for.....wait...no, I've pretty much always been against crime. </end snark>

As TSgt David L. pointed out, the military is a microcosm of the populace as a whole. Problems found there will inevitably be found on the installation. Hopefully since military members are better trained, take more pride in themselves, and adhere to higher standards, many of those problems are small in number compared to the civilian population. The biggest issues I saw while in uniform were the issues that always seem to occur any time you put males and females in close quarters for extended periods of time.

FT. Bragg was full of crime murder theft drugs all on post. It's a dang shame.

Generally, crime on base tends to be less than off base, but like anything it varies. I would like to thing that all soldiers have enough common sense to avoid criminal acts, but we know that it isn't true. You have criminals at all ranks but as a general rule I saw less on base than off. Most criminal acts when I lived on base were from dependents who for some reason figured they could get away with the same acts they tried off post.

As a brand new 2Lt, I lived off-base in Ft Worth with my wife for a year...crime was serious and frequent. The helicopters chasing one felon or another often woke us up in the middle of the night. We moved into Carswell AFB base housing to get away from it. It wasn't perfect, but it was 80-90% better. The camaraderie within the neighborhood was so great...we knew each other and watched out for each other, and kept each others' families safe.

Crime is bad... Its bad on post, bad if it happens off post..... Was that really your question?
Or are you asking about the frequency of crime on post vice off? Or the severity and type of crime on post vice off?

My experience of living on base was mainly overseas. Crime ran the gamut from murder, rape to black marketing to domestic violence to vandalism and underage drinking by dependent children.
