A Harrier takes off vertically at Cherry Point.... once it got about a couple hundred feet off the ground every warning light in the cockpit goes off at once. The pilot punches out and lands safely close by. He is standing on the tarmac looking up at his plane, happily hovering like nothing happened. Then the wind picks up and the plane starts drifting towards town. No one knows what to do, Colonels are freaking out. Finally a salty old gunny draws a LAW from the armory and calmly shoots it down over the marshes. It usually starts with a basic trainee decides to commit suicide for one of a hundred different reasons. He ties the end of the buffer cord around his neck and throws the buffer out of a second or third floor window, thinking that this would somehow strangle him or snap his neck. Unfortunately, nothing happens because the buffer cord was too long and the buffer crashes into the concrete below. The Drill Sgt.s catch the trainee before he can do anything else and is thoroughly smoked before being sent to a psych ward and is never seen again. In another version of the story, the buffer lands on a Drill Sgt, killing him instantly, and the trainee is sent to Leavenworth for murder.

Another is that you get 15 - 30 seconds before you fully wake up where you're not responsible for your actions. So you could, supposedly, jump out of bed and take a swing at your Drill Sgt and get in trouble. The story has actually two parts.

During the Christmas time of 1943, the Germans and the Russians were fighting in an all out hatred warfare. Field Marshal Zhukov and his staff driver was doing a leader's recon at the front lines of Stalingrad. The bitter winter has brought the supply trains to a slow crawl.

Along his route, he observed three Enlisted and one Sergent pulling a cart of supplies without any vehicles or animals. All four pull in unison with the Sergent leading.

Zhukov stopped his staff car and walked over to the team. All four saw the larger than life General dropped their line and snapped to attention and gave them their honors. Zhukov looks upon them, each of them, frostbitten, appearing tired yet, full of pride to see their comrade leader. Zhukov ordered them to rest and to speak candidly within tact.

For the next 20 mins, each of them speak of home and what would they do once the war is over while smoking the General's cigarettes. Unfortunately, Zhukov touched a nerve when they reported that the Nazis killed or displaced their love ones. Both Zhukov and the staff driver were swelled with humility.

Before Zhukov notice it, he'd asked where their comrade officer has gone. All of them went silent until Zhukov demanded to know where he had gone to. The Sergent said the young officer commandeered a staff car and left to get supplies at the rear trains. He'd ordered them to push forward.

Zhukov was furious by the act of alleged cowardiness. He took off his jacket and helped his comrades complete their mission. He told his staff driver to observe each staff car that passes them without rendering aid and write down the licence plates number to find out which commander owns they vehicle. Also, any officer who provides assistance, to write down their names.

As time passes, it seem upsetting to see lots of senior commander cars passes them by not offering any help. Only about two LTs came by and help the team pull the carts of supplies. Each of them didn't recognized the Field Marshal since he wore no rank on his shirt (yet it displayed on his field jacket.)

It took half a day for the 6 man team to arrive at the Front lines. A sense of accomplishment were felt among the men particularly Zhukov. He never felt so alive to help his men. It was a shock to the LTs when Zhukov wore his field jacket. For their reward, the Privates were now Sergents. The Sergent was battlefield commission to LT, and the LTs were promoted to Captains and placed on his entourage as aide to camps.

The Captains were then tasked to assembled the commanders and XOs on the list produced by Zhukov's driver and be placed under guard back to HQ.

It took the new captains a night, in Christmas day, to assemble about 10 commanders and their XOs to report in front of the Field Marshal desk. Each commander was demoted to the lowest rank while the XOs were took charge of their units with a cautionary advice stated-

"...Leaders must place their troops well being before their ambition of commander. Yes, mission must be complete at all costs yet, without enlist men and Sergent's wisdom, our army cannot run..."

The first orders of the day for the demoted commander to feed chow to their fellow peers. Each Enlisted and NCOs will eat prior to them eating. This lessons were spread all over the front lines by the new captains. Some commanders interpret as an order from Zhukov that all commanders must feed their troops or be sacked. Other progressive commanders saw the importance of the order and a way to provide tribute to their subordinates for their fierce devotion to Mother Russia.

Incidently, One of those captains became one of the Premier of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev. In one rare meeting, General Eisenhower, was impressed by the story by Comrade Captain Khrushchev that Ike proposed that his commanders do the same thing for Christmas 1944.

Would it explain the massive rout during the Ardennes Campaign (aka Battle of the Bulge), only history can shed some light. Yet, it's now been the time honored tradition for American leaders to feed their troops on Holidays...such as Christmas.

From the book of Uncle Ray Ray...Amen. It was when I was deployed to the Sinai for the MFO. We had a soldier who was married and received a video tape of her in a negligee. She was at first flirting with him, but then you notice the camera is moving. Next, she lies on the bed, the camera is placed down at an angle to show the bed, and some greasy dude (Jody) mounts her and they go at it...she leans over his shoulder and yells at the camera that she wants a divorce. I believe that it has been told about practically every deployment the U.S. Army has been on since...but I saw it with my own eyes in 1986...or did I?
