Back in the day, it would have been bike riding, not hiking, and along the Lech River on the outskirts of Augsburg would have been the place.

My favorite place in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Two different hikes. One is up Mt. LeConte on one of the six trails leading to the Mt. LeConte Lodge; the only lodge inside park boundaries and the highest lodge east of the Mississippi River. It is only accessible via trails, and you have to hike it! No horses, no cars or bikes. (Top of the mountain is 6,593 feet above sea level) Next Wednesday, weather permitting, my son and I are going to hike it again for the umpteenth time!

The other trail in the park, my children and I hike is part of the Appalachian Trail from Newfound Gap (5046 feet) to Clingmans Dome (6,643 feet). Don't let it fool you! Along the trail it is not a smooth straight hike. You go up and down many mountains during this seven-mile hike. You will burn some calories on this hike. In the fall with the changing of the colors, the most beautiful place I have ever seen.

We have a place in the Texas Panhandle called Palo Duro Canyon. Lots of hiking and biking trails. Great place to watch all the cottonwoods and other trees turning colors! The cooler mornings are the best because all the wildlife is out and moving around.

The last hike I participated in was a hike to the site of the 'M.A.S.H.' television series. This is where my profile photo was taken. This site is in the Santa Monica Mountains in California. It was a glorious day because it rained the day before our hike. The temperature was perfect, the air was crisp, and the sky was so clear. The ground was a bit muddy so my friend and I wore our hiking boots. The hike was about 2 1/2 miles round trip. The 'difficulty' range was easy but the chances of mud made caused added concentration. During our hike, we encountered two bucks crossing the road; one was a 5 pointer and the other was a forked horn. (In California, we count only one side of the rack) The older buck never wavered in his steps because he was confident that we posed no danger. The younger buck did hesitate several times but did finally crossed the road. This event happened about 50 yards in front of us. We had our cell phones with us but we did not want to make any movements that might have caused either one of the bucks to startle. We also encountered several coyotes on our hike to and from the site. Since this hike was not a 'high difficulty' hike, we did have our lunch at a pick-nick table at the site. When we started our hike that day, we were unaware that Film students from UCLA were filming a Student Film that day so we did not venture up to the helicopter pad site. I was a bit disappointed about not going up to view the helicopter pad site but we supported the students in their education and respected their intentions. We did have a long conversation with the students in reference to whether the students understood the significance of the site or not. All the students spent many hours of research to learn the significance of the site and chose the site because of their research findings. I truly enjoyed the hike that day.

I no longer live there, but I'd have to say Sitka, Alaska. Just so crisp and majestic. Second would be somewhere around the Columbia River Gorge because of all the different leaf colors, so much red, yellow, brown, etc. Both places are such a visual treat.

My favorite place to hike in fall are the Appalachian Mountains. Unbelievable scenery and loads of opportunity to stop and take in the experience. Pays off to go in a group for fuller experience as well as accountability.

Years ago when I lived in Northern VA. I would go to skyview recreation area on the blue ridge mountain range and hike up several trails including the Appalachian Trail especially in the fall when the leafage was full of color. There was one point that had a clearing facing the east and the clear night sky in the fall while drinking some freshly brewed coffee on a camp stove with the clear light of the stars above truly memorable and refreshing after a long hot summer.

I enjoy hiking the Horse Heaven Hills in E WA. They’re a short drive away, or I can start right out my front door. Ridge lines offer great sunrises, views of the Snake, Yakima and Columbia Rivers, the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas.

I love hiking the ancient shoreline of Lake Bonneville, which eventually dwindled to what is now the Great Salt Lake. The shoreline is in the mountains and fall colors are gorgeous!

My highlight small portion hike of the Appalachian Trail was from Sam's Gap NC. to Hampton TN. 108 miles, I think its about 2,000 miles, so we are just Appalachian neophytes, nevertheless, it was a special time, we said we needed to do more, someday, but as life goes, we never did.

I cracked my femur and am now receiving Physical therapy at the VA hospital here in Albuquerque. My current "hiking" is walking around in my house. When I was able to hike, I preferred the Sandia Mountains.

My favorite place to hike is Ragged Mountain in Connecticut. It was where my now fiancee and I went on our second date and shared our first kiss as we admired the view of Meriden Mountain along with the changing foliage. We went back the year after and I proposed to her at the same spot (she said yes).

I went hiking for the first time in Acadia National Park (Mt Desert Island, Maine) and it was breathtaking. There are varying levels for all skills, and the scenery is surreal. Climbing the cliffs and the rocks over the ocean, or hiking Cadillac Mountain, the ridgelines, or the many lakes and vistas, there is no shortage of beautiful scenery. Leaves changing and the thick evergreens make for a wonderful fall pallet, with a brisk breeze and the sound of gulls. I'm from Florida, and the drive north is spectacular, capped off by the rugged Maine coast. A must-see for hikers and campers!

Fall hiking in the Horse Heaven Hills in Eastern Washington is my favorite. Beautiful sunrises, views of the Snake, Yakima, or Columbia Rivers and the towns of the Tri-Cities or Prosser are all possibilities depending on which way you wander on the ridge lines.

Larch Hikes In Washington State! Larch trees are one of the few coniferous trees to change colors and lose their needles in the fall, so seeing the bright yellow trees during a limited time frame in the fall is like catching the cherry blossoms in bloom in Washington DC!

Some of Flagstaff, Arizona mountain ranges are about 7,000 feet. I would climb to the top and play catch with pinecones I threw over the cliff's edge waiting for the fierce winds to return them back to me.

There are several places where I love to hike or bike at different times of the year. In the fall I walk on the Lakefront of Chicago, called the "Lakefront Trail" the 18-mile trail has access to many of the top parks and recreational areas in downtown Chicago. Then later in the year I head to Florida and use the Upper Tampa Bay Trail. This is a biking and hiking trail that connects the west side of the upper Tampa area in northern Hillsborough County in the Tampa Bay area.

It is a toss up between Sugarloaf Mountain near Marquette, Michigan, Chapel Falls loop near Munising, Michigan or Tehquamenon Falls near Paradise, Michigan are great hikes. The fall colors have been spectacular around the beginning of October.

Eagles Bluff, Clifton Maine. Its a well known rock-climbing location but has a couple trails hiking around to get to the summit. It overlooked an untouched (by humans) marshy pond, classic New England foliage and the nearby hills and other hiking spots (a mix of rock faces and windy wooded paths).

This is hard for me as I truly love the outdoors. Being an avid outdoorsman , and a true fishing fanatic I do a lot of walking / hiking , as a result of this I have found several places that I dearly love to hike in. If I had to pick one of them though it would be the Laurel Highlands of the Allegheny Mountains. I have been fortunate enough to have walked well over 400 miles throughout that region fishing the many creeks , and other various waterways , rivers , brooks , and mountain lakes. From Brushcreek , to Wills Creek , from Old Schoolhouse road, to down below Cooks Dam , as well as all through Berlin , Brothers Valley , & the Sommerset Pennsylvania areas , no matter what the Season the Beauty of all these places is just simply fantastic. I am very Blessed to have had the fortune to have been hiking throughout those area's for over 55 years now. Thank you all , and may GOD BLESS YOU , & YOURS NOW , & FOREVER. My favorite place to hike and see the beautiful fall colors is Taylors Falls, MN. The Maple and Oak trees are beautiful bright orange, yellow and reds mixed with dark greens of the evergreens, all set against the cliffs of the river below. We climb up on the hills to view the river scene and one can take a boat cruise down the St Croix River too. The grandkids love to bring home the biggest, prettiest leaves and preserve them by ironing between a towel with waxed paper on both sides of the leaves. The area has lots of fun eating places and shops to visit too.

We have a trail here in Marion, MA which is mostly over wooden decks. It goes to the Marion harbor and offers beautiful views of the water. My wife has to use a walker and can easily handle it.

Oak Mountain State Park in Alabama. There are so many trails, but especially go on the trip to Kings Chair Overlook with beautiful views and see the 1942 crash site of the B26b Medium Bomber based out of MacDill AFB. Then you can circle back to Peavine Falls.

Bowman's Hill at Washington's Crossing State Park in Pennsylvania. Especially in the fall. The colorful leaves and crisp air (and maybe some hot apple cider) are thrilling. Plus the historical aspects of the area are an added treat.

Enchanted Rock, State Park near Fredericksburg, Texas. Huge massive pink granite dome. 11 miles of trails. You can hike, backpack, camp, rock climb, picnic, bird, study nature, geocache and stargaze. Rock climbers must check in at park headquarters. You can pick up route maps there and read the climbing rules. All trails close 30 minutes after sunset, except the Loop Trail. The Summit Trail may close in wet weather. I have been several times still want to return for a hike. Warning Easter weekend has long lines of traffic to get into the park.

I love to go Hidden Falls inside the The Sequoia National Forest.
From hidden falls you can see all of the west side of Mount Whitney.
It's so beautiful to camp and hike there in the fall.

Haven't hiked in 10 years due to stress fractures cause by endocrine disorders, had parathyroid cancer 2009 and recently had a adrenal tumor removed. My hope is after this op I might get to feeling well enough to hike Red River Gorge in Eastern Kentucky.

The aroma of cedar, oak and red moss in the air.
The sounds of birds and wild life foraging everywhere.
A steep climb up on the trail well worth it.
Feeling the suns rays as you reach the summit.

Trails in Acadia National Park, Maine. I could hear the water crashing against the rocks, or hear a fisherman's boat horn, the birds, or maybe even spot an eagle. My favorite place in the world so far.

I love hiking at the Friedrich Wilderness Park; a nature preserve in San Antonio, Texas, the city where I live. The park has hills because it's located on the Balcones escarpment which separates the Texas Hill Country from the South Texas flat region. This link shows a map of the trails: (https://www.sanantonio.gov/Portals/0/Files/Parks/Map%20of%20Friedrich%20Wilderness%20Park.pdf?ver=2017-05-01-140200-740) It has various trail lengths and difficulty levels. Some of the trails are definitely better using a hiking cane. This park is also a nesting site for the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler; both federally listed endangered bird species. I've had some fun and de-stressing times hiking there - Liliana Ruiz.

So many great places to hike... I will have to say NE Georgia (shout out to Clayton, GA!), near the foothills of the Appalachian Trail. So many incredible hikes with fabulous views, incredible waterfalls and the best part - I have family nearby so have people to enjoy the hikes with. My doggo loves hiking there also!

When I could still hike, I liked to hike along the Appalachian Trail in Maryland with my dog. We'd start at Gathland State Park, and either hike five or seven miles up the trail and back, or, if I could arrange it, get dropped off there and hike down into Harpers Ferry or up to Washington Monument State Park.

I love Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. The fall colors are stunning! The trails are marked and rated easy, medium, and challenging. After a perfect day on the trail communing with nature, we slept at the Inn. A real perfect day.

My favorite places to hike are in Fayetteville, WV. You have the Endless Wall Trail and so many other amazing spots not far from there. Definitely tons of cool spots near the New River Gorge Bridge.

I love going out to Joshua Tree National Park in fall, the summer is much too hot and the winter can get uncomfortably cold, as deserts are wont to do. Fall just hits right, spring is nice too with the yucca blooms but I'm more a Halloween guy, the solemn desert during the harvest season speaks to me.

I like to go on urban hikes in the fall. There is something peaceful and fun about walking through fallen leaves, seeing the seasons change in my comminity, and stopping into local shops for coffee and pastries.

My favorite place to home in the Fall is Sullivan County, PA. Sullivan County has two state parks, but it also boasts may overlooks, waterfalls and backroads. The county has approx 6000 residents, so the tranquil quiet of nature is felt wherever you go. Visit Sullivan County and lose yourself in the amazing nature. It’s great for your soul.

WE love to hike on Roan Mountain. It is on the border between Virginia and Tennessee. There are so many peaks on top that you can see for 50 miles in any direction. You can see rain storms on different mountain peaks, and the temperature is always 20 degrees cooler up there. At night there is no man made light anywhere in sight, so you can see the stars and the milky way so clear it is amazing.
My son used to love to go up there when he was younger and pick blueberries on top of the mountain. When he passed away last year, his friends and family gathered from all over the world and we met at the mountain, hiked up, enjoyed each others company, told stories about him, and spread his ashes on the mountain. It is the most special place in East Tennessee, Western Carolina, not far from Beach and Sugar ski resorts.
