There's a lot of bad ones out there, but the worst "popular" one is gonna have to be "The Hurt Locker." They should have hired a real veteran to advise them on that flick. Terrible.

It's probably cliche, but favorite is Saving Private Ryan. But not because of the much ballyhooed (and rightly so) realism of the combat scenes. I am a huge fan of the movie because of the extraordinary scripting - and acting - that went into the characters. I have *been* just about every person in that movie at one point or another. And they ALL rang true. Even Oppum.

Least favorite, hands down is Starship Troopers. If I had never read the book, I would probably feel differently, because the movie itself is just another silly sci-fi romp. But when held against the book it is supposedly based upon, the movie is a travesty.

This is a tough one to answer. Hardly watch any of the new military movies coming out, I'm a old school movie watcher. I would have to say that Patton was my favorite. The least favorite movie was The Battle of the Bulge, the one with Henry Fonda in it.

Favorite: Kelly's Heroes. I don't care that it is "historically inaccurate" it captured the essence of tank crews better than any other movie before or since. Sure, we can be like the crew in Fury when we have to, but that's not who we ARE.

Favorite: Sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Read the book and watched the movie. The book and movie was so close that it was astonishing.

Hacksaw Ridge - Portrayed the actions of conscientious objector Cpl. Desmond T. Doss, in which there is a monument and VFW honoring him in Lynchburg Virginia.

Best - "Battleground" - an outstanding postwar flic about a platoon from the 101st in Bastogne. (Honorable mention to "The Longest Day", which holds up well,, and is still captivating after all these years.
Worst- many candidates, but I will go with "Apocalypse Now", which had little, if anything to do with Vietnam (Honorable mention to "Windtalkers", which took place in some alternate universe, unrelated to WWII.)

I love Kelly's Heroes, Behind Enemy Lines, Stripes but never cared for Under Siege. It used to make me cringe with Steven Seagal's salute toward the end of the film. Someone should've shown him how to straighten his hand. Of course, maybe it's because I saw it on base right after boot camp and I was more sensitive about such things at the time. Lol

Least Favorite: name is gone from my memory bank but was a pre D Day movie where radios worked, uniforms were all wrong as were the weapons (lever action Winchester) used, and in WW2 they did not talk as a 2019 lingo ( copy that was 1 term used)was billed as a drema but I thought it was a bad comedy

Apocalypse Now movie as it showed how Vietnam was out of control. Montagnards helped us overcome VC attacks. The VCAnd NVA LIKED TO DECAPITATE PRISIONERS AND village chiefs. The conflict stays with you forever. You come back home a different person because of the brutal things you have seen and the torture of the enemy against innocent people.
I also like the movie DEER HUNTER as it showed what combat stress does to people. You have a edge that is so difficult to understand as the smell of gun powder, smoke, fear and death flows through your body. Seeing a dead U.S. soldier is gut wrenching, and it stays with you forever.

The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) is my most memorable.
I detested Private Banjamin (1980). I was in the Army in West Germany when this came out and my mother told me she loved it. I understood she thought it was cute and did not understand a daughter choosing the military so soon after The Vietnam War.

My least favorite is The Hurt Locker, not because it's bad, but because its design is a bit haunting to watch. Good movie, but not one I'd watch again.

My favorite movie was "The Day After". Mainly because it showed me, on a more global/ human scale, the extent of what I was doing everyday, down in the MMIII missile silos. When they inserted the Air Force training films, I realized that these were the same people who trained me how to maintain these massive WMDs. Knowing the level of professionalism and the height of security involved, afforded me an immense amount of pride in the work that I was asked to do.

My least favorite movie was "The Day After", because it showed exactly what I was maintaining every day and it also exposed the toll it took on the "hands on" people involved, mentally. We watched this movie at our off base housing and then, each of us had to go to work the next day. It made me fully reflect on what I was doing, in my metal cage, going up and down the silo, to ensure that the behemoth was "ready to GO". I had to grapple with the fact that I was contributing to a very possible event that could destroy the world. Not just North Dakota, but, the World! We were naturally, terrified!

My least favorite military movie has got to be "Saving Private Ryan". I've watched it several times and it's a beautifully acted movie by all the characters. It's my least favorite because I don't think it's right to risk the lives of other soldiers to retrieve 1 soldier. It's possible that soldiers in that squad could last son's also. Yet it's also my favorite movie. I actually love the fact that our country cares enough about it's citizens to go to those lengths to bring back the soldier at all cost to his grieving mother.

Taking Chance. It is an HBO produced movie that was a true story of a Marine Corps LtCol who escorts a fallen LCpl back to his hometown. As a Casualty Officer for our Marine Corps it shows what our escorts go through when bringing our fallen home and the difficult job of supporting our families during their time of need. Watched it once, bought the DVD and will never watch it again (too many emotions).

Stripes or Tropic Thunder have to be favorite (TIE).
Least favorite have to be BlackHawk Down.
I have heard its an awesome movie, but I was in Somalia at the Port of Mogadishu with 7th Group.
Our cranes were too large so main body returned to USA leaving skeleton crew behind to upload equipment.
Once the UN there found out about us, they tasked us front / rear convoy support.
We had to escort important peoples outside gates to wherever.
Saw everyday what starving, thirsty civilians were capable of.
Just first few moments triggered horrible memories!!!

There have been so many military movies made over the years for different reasons and from different perspectives... but I'll say the one that's at the top of my list for the time being is Hacksaw Ridge. Not only is it an unbelievable account of the incomparable human being who was Desmond Doss, but it runs the spectrum of every human emotion and action, from the ultimate display of selfless service to the horrors of war, the purity of love and faith to the raw reality of hate and prejudice inside many of us. But in the end, as a movie it encompasses every genre... drama, romance, thrills, comedy, horror... all while demonstrating the core reason all of us join the military... to protect our (and the world's) freedom and way of life, and to take care of the soldier next to us, no matter the cost.

And after that long-winded diatribe about my favorite military movie... the worst is simply In the Army Now with Pauly Shore because, well... Pauly Shore. Do I need to say anything else? :D

My favorite Military film, would have to be Pearl Harbor. It does a great job showing the actual experiences that not only our nation, but our soldiers endured during that chaotic day. My least favorite film would have to be Platoon. I just did not think it was at all realistic, in showing what life was like for soldiers.

Favorite movie its an old one, (A Bridge Too Far). Yeah it was almost 3 hours long, which was unheard of in the 70's, but movie goers had alot more sticktoitness back them. I can't forget to mention it had a great classic cast.

Hands down, Hurt Locker is the worst military movie of this generation. I cannot believe it won the Oscar. Everyone who served at any time watches this junk and says "There's no way" at least 100 times. On the other hand, Blackhawk Down is one of the most realistic, culturally accurate depictions of the Army I've seen. Minus the two fake Southern accents from Australian actors. Twelve Strong was a good one too!

I haven't seen it in ages, but Gardens of Stone was a good one. James Earl Jones as the CSM was awesome.
All time favorite Saving Private Ryan.
Blackhawk Down right behind it. It did a good job at capturing the fact that most of the soldiers were in their early 20s., making life or death decisions.

My favorite is 'Dawn Patrol' from 1936. Starring David Niven and Errol Flynn, it was a story about bravery, camaraderie, and the demands of leadership. Least favorite? Red Dawn from 1984. A silly fantasy 'invasion' yarn.

Absolutely hate ANY and all war related movies. Spent way too much time under the same situations/circumstances as depicted within. Prior to 9/11 it would have been D-Day or Saving PVT Ryan. Both realistic enough. I Han never realized what my Father (Marine) meant when I dragged him to “Full Metal Jacket”, now I know and refuse to watch any more.

Well, my favorite isn’t really a movie but a mini-series: Band of Brothers. But since that isn’t an option here, I would have to say Full Metal Jacket or Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor only because I saw it on the day it came out with my Grandma. She was alive when the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor and she told us what the feeling of the country was like and the heartbreak. She was a very compassionate woman. It was very interesting to just listen to her. Anyway, Stripes is probably my least favorite. I love Bill Murray but the lack of military bearing in that movie made me cringe. (I’m attaching a picture of my Grandma and me. I realize I look like a guy in the photo. It was right after my basic and AIT at Ft. Leonard Wood and it was hot as hell there. So, I cut my hair.)

Very difficult to narrow it down to one each. Favorite is Full Metal Jacket. Least favorite is Battleship. It comes down to realism. I went through USMC boot camp and then onto war, very real details in the movie. That goes all the way down to singing doofy movie/ tv songs. In my case it was the Brady Bunch theme. Later I joined the Navy and again went to war, I worked in CIVIC feeding info to the CIC. Battleship mutilated the roles in combat. The Combat Action Officer doesn't jump down and pilot the RHIB boat and his lead analyst doesn't become his gunner. There is competition for people to get those jobs and who are willing to commit much more time to the down and dirty roles. CIC people work toward higher quals in their field.

My favorite military movie is Sergeant York who didn't believe in killing and his chain of command convinced him that killing sometimes do good. SGT York eventually captured a whole company of Germans. My worst military movie is A soldier's Story because of the abuse of power and disrespect towards the soldiers that Sarg inflicted upon them.

I could also add, "Tight Little Island" or released in the UK as "Whiskey Galore". It's a WWII film about the impact on the war on a small Scottish Island. The Brits were sending all the whiskey form Scotland to the US to help fund the war effort. This left none for local consumption. The island is question is blessed by a freighter running aground on the island. It's cargo? Scotch Whiskey.
