What's up with the (P) at the end of the rank ? Yes I know what it means. But when did it become part of a persons Rank ?

According to regulation, promotable status is not to be used in correspondence, nor is it a part of their rank or a rank unto itself.

That reminded me of a guy we had in our company. Out on a field exercise we stayed in barracks the last 3 days and he put on his bunk SPC (P). Needless to say the platoon Sergeant made him take it off in a heart beat hahaha

Im not really sure what it means but im just going to assume it means promotable and really why use that as part of your rank. I was a SPC for just over 5 years so for the majority of that time i was promtable but never felt the need to make the entire world know it. Especially since there are way better ways to show that you are working toward your promtion like take charge and making sure that all required task for the day are being complete.

Chapter 6-5 Personnel on Active Duty
paragraph c(2) Do not use the “(P)” (meaning that the signer is promotable) as part of a signature block on Army correspondence unless it benefits or enhances the image of the Army. However, it may be used in an address for such things as congratulatory notes.

That being said I think those that do it tend to think that the addition of the "P" gives them some unfounded additional power or authority.

I have been in for 13 years. I never have problems seeing the (P) even when I was enlisted in order to show that a person was promotable, but was not flaunting it. For example, I have seen Soldiers use them in memorandums for a special school or something that shows that they will be promoted to the next rank. When I was applying for VTIP, I used the 1LT(P) to show that I was promotable because they required CPT's and 1LT(P)'s. If someone just makes a sign and posts it on their door, then no, it's not the right way to do it.

In general SFC Private RallyPoint Member is correct by utilizing the regulation. Some Soldiers will go overboard with their promotable status.

I've wondered the same thing. I was promotable when I got out, but when signing up here (20 years later) I'm obviously no longer promotable, so it never even occurred to me to add it.

Mine has it but I don't use it in official correspondence. When I set up my RallyPoint account I had already been selected for promotion to MSG. During the process of filling out my profile it had the option to click if you are promotable so I did, and now you see the (P) next to my name. Not much to it other than that. I assume you are referring to the ones you see here on RallyPoint?

I can't speak for the Army - but I think this is something Army unique...or is it? Is this (P) something that goes on your military ID card? If not, then I would say it shouldn't be put out here. I attempted to find the specific regs on this...but didn't find anything that makes sense. Where are our reg quoters on this one?

What does everyone think about all of the SPCs and SGTs on here with (P) after their rank? I won't quote AR 25-50, I just want your thoughts.

Trust me.. there is a difference in being promotable and non-promotable.. just ask someone who is getting looked at for Promotion and ask them did the "make the list this year". If they smile more than likely they have that "P" status as you state. If not then.. better luck next year. With a drawn down hitting the Army from every direction I don't see a problem with adding the P. Like most of stated its part of the Rallypoint website. I don't put P on any of my military paper work.. I.E. Emails, Leave Forms, etc.. I don't really see what the big deal is personally. When someone tells me there promotable my first response is congratulations!
