I was doing the best I could to support my little family, but it wasn't enough. One evening, I think it was around Christmas time, I heard a knock on our door and to my utter surprise, there was a very large basket of groceries sitting on our porch. This was a blessing to my family and to this day, over 25 years ago, I still do not know who placed this precious gift at my door.
Many years later we had a family living across the street from us, and they were also in dire straights and it was around Christmas time. I recognized this and asked my family if we could donate our gifts to this family. They all responded quite enthusiastically and we boxed up the gifts in a big box and dropped it off at their door when they happened to be away for the afternoon. I grew up in a household where there was lots of verbal, physical and other abuses. No one really ever heard what each other was saying, and I’ll finally have someone in my life who here’s what I’m saying and actually, I seem to understand who I am. I feel seen, and that is by far the most thoughtful thing anyone can do is to just get to know who you actually are. It’s great to have such an important person in my life. My husband was in India at the time and we had no family anywhere close or that could get to us at the drop of a dime. Living in an island in the middle of the Pacific does have its disadvantages when it comes to needing family who live in the East Coast. My daughter 4 at tue time. I had just had major knee surgery 3 days before my husband left. My daughters daycare teacher came to our house every morning, got her up, dressed, fed and took her to Pre-school. Her babysitter would come to our house after she got out of school, and would help me to get down to the car and she would drive me over to pick her up. The Pre-school would not release my daughter to anyone under 18, unless a listed contact was present. The preschool helped with not making me try to get off the car. I physically couldn’t walk or put any weight in my knee for 1 month. Her baby sitter would then either drive us around for a bit, or just take us back home and watched my daughter and cared for her, would feed her, made sure she was bathed and toys put away put her to bed. She did all of this for free. Her mom would come over during the day, would clean the house, do the dishes, walk the dogs, made sure I eating, and took care of me. Nobody had asked her to that. When I started having difficulty with my right arm and noticed a long blood clot going from my hand where my IV from surgery had been, and that the clot had actually developed a good way up the top of my forearm, she took me to the Emergency Room.
It was discovered that there was a massive blood clot in my leg as well and I was immediately admitted and rushed into Emergency Surgery with IR to start breaking up the clot in my leg because it was so long that it from my lower calf all the way up intro my lower abdomen and was going up my IVC, blocking blood going back to my heart. Even after my husband came home on a Res Cross flight, everyone who was helping to care for our daughter, and help care for me, still came around every day, knowing my husband was going to be spending a lot of time at the hospital. I was there for a month, 10 of which were in the ICU, with multiple rounds of TPA to break up the clot, more Emergency Surgery when pieces would go to my lungs and start heading towards my heart and multiple blood transfusions.
These people became not only great friends, but became our family. I didn’t know our sitters mom. I new her dad, my husband worked with her dad, and at the time she took me to the Emergency Room, it was our first time meeting. My manager at the time knew of the wedding and still decided to throw a shower Inspite of not being a guest. I was really surprised. Most people are nice ,but not all are thoughtful. Those are the ones you must keep around. He was off work of course, and I had been laid off two months earlier. During that stressful time I completely forgot about the holidays. Our neighbors had been kind to check in with us all during this terrible time. I was sole caregiver of my husband and our 5 year old then. Thanksgiving day rolls around and I was getting ready to make some chicken noodle soup. Knock at the door and turns out the local grocery store was delivering an entire turkey dinner, pre-made. The card they gave me said "Have a Happy Thanksgiving signed, you're caring neighbors". I sat on the stair and cried for quite some time. The next day my son and I made home made thank you cards as well as a thank you sign for our window. We delivered the cards to all our neighbors, not knowing who had helped, we didn't want to leave anyone out. His help allowed me to focus on learning, and I went all the way to grad school. I’m now a research scientist at an Ivy League school and I love my job. Sadly, my uncle never got to see me achieve what he made possible. Mere months before I defended my thesis and got the fancy robes, he was killed by a drunk driver; t-boned at an intersection pulling out from the mall where he had just bought birthday gifts for my cousin’s kids. He was a veteran, too, and had just retired from civil service. He literally and figuratively saved my life. He never once implied I was a burden, nor did he ever ask for thanks, though I gave him plenty. He just did what he could to help when I needed it, and then went on to help others as soon as I was stable again. When I tried to pay for my meal I was told it was taken care of. When I asked who did that the waitress pointed out a table with two young men, probably in their early 20's. A lot of emotions hit me all at once when I walked by and thanked them and they said "thank you for your service". The fact that such young men would do that for me, I am 75, impressed me and gave me a whole new perspective on the younger generations. My mother, while receiving SSI, had to find a job that paid in cash as she was limited to less than $900.00 a month in income or she would lose what my father earned. She started bartending at the local VFW, after a few years she bought the building the VFW and Canteen were located. On a Saturday afternoon in May, of my 9th year, before Memorial Day my brother and I showed up to help clean rifles for the upcoming ceremony. On this day a Retired SGM Jefferson Davis (J.D.) Pratt, USA, Inf. Ft. Stewart, would meet my brother and I. He asked permission from my mother to mentor both of us. J.D. started with teaching us small engine repair (lawnmowers, dirt bikes, go-carts, ATVs, etc...) as he owned a car repair shop and many other businesses in the community. J.D. Pratt had three sons and he would be our dad too. The life lessons he instilled in two little boys in South Georgia, I can use still today. I stand in awe of what J.D. Pratt didn't have to do as he taught two white looking children how to be men, BTW J.D. Pratt is a Fine Southern Gentleman that happened to be born in Nicholls, Ga in the 1930s as a Black male. There is proof that it takes a village to raise any child and as well you will never know the impact you have on others until you see it in their eyes. I Love you J.D. for showing me how a man is supposed to love and how to love others no matter your circumstance. We buried Mr. Pratt in 2003, in a field outside of town on a hill under an oak tree, so he can watch all he built, all three of his sons, my brother and I were pallbearers in his funeral. One of the greatest honors and saddest moments of my life.
