As a Microsoft-product consultant, I'm a little biased. Having been said, I would recommend going through 70-461 study guide if you wish to learn MS SQL Server specific syntax. For the most part, if being a software engineer is your end goal, you don't need to know advanced SQL, the ability to run DML/DDL queries is enough. If you are coding with Java/C#, you probably want to learn Entity Framework/ORM anyways.
