What's the best mandolin you've played?

Doesn't have to be one you've owned. The single best mandolin I've played was actually a Mandocello at Music Emporium in Lexington, MA. It's a 20's era Gibson, and the notes just sink into the floor boards. Amazing instrument.

I don't play mandolins often (ever), but when I do...I play cardboard dulcimers.

Fender Sonoran, but it's shaped and tuned differently and comes with 6 strings.

The best one I've played was an old Gibson A Model built in 1902. I was scared to death of damaging it, but the sound was magnificent. Perfectly mellow with a brilliant action.

I own a 1916 Gibson mandocello and 2004 Gibson Sam Bush F-5, but the best I've ever played was David Grisman's '24 Gibson Lloyd Loar. After a workshop in Portland a few years back, David just handed it to me and said, "here, pick on this a bit," and he left the room and didn't come back for an hours and a half. One of the best mandolins ever made. Just my opinion, bur is right.
