When I retired from nurse anesthesia, I started teaching nursing full-time. When I decided to stop teaching I found myself with a great deal of time on my hands. We had just moved to Dawsonville, GA and found a church. I noticed a newspaper article about a free medical clinic which the church had founded.
I found myself working as a nurse a couple days a month; that morphed into one day a week, we only run medical one day per week. I was coming up on my 14th yr of service and was in for the long haul. I had what was considered fast tract to Staff Sergeant and was about to be looked at for SFC for the first time with everything I needed to make it under my belt including Drill Sergeant duty and Instructor. When I got the news I was going to be medically retired, I had just started the process for my A&P course which would have been paid by the military. The news hit me like a ton of bricks, even though my family was excited for the next step in our journey. I did the only thing I knew to do and that was surround surround myself with my family, and get outdoors in the woods. My family (wife and kids) are the only thing that held me together through that entire process. That was in 2017, and today I can say that between the medication I'm on and my family along with being in the great outdoors, I feel like I am a better man than I ever was before. A lot of us pretty much start to think of all the things we have to do when you wake up and say Oh, I got to do this. I got to do that and automatically when you first open up and you start thinking of all the things that need to be done creating your schedule in your head. We start adding stress to ourselves to see sort of we're preoccupied with so many things that need to be done.
appreciating life first. When I wake up in the morning and the first thought I try to think of is my Creator and think of everything around me. This helps me start to live with gratitude and by starting with gratitude it sets the tone for the day because when your thankful for something, the first thing you do is humble yourself because of all these things that are given to you. And there's something to be said about that. It also pulls away from the negativity that you're focused on the good things. You're focused on things to be grateful for, rather than focusing on the negative things because they're there is not going to go away. I ran across this ideal in one of my Daily Devotional books and I loved the concept. I take a simple unstained recipe sized boxes and decorate them with beautiful jewelry pieces from my personal collection, pieces from the collection my mom left me, other jewelry pieces I find at really great prices, and a variety of different ornaments. Every box has to have one or more butterflies pieces as well as pearls. Monthly index card tabs and a set of blank index cards are included inside of the box. The top of the box displays the message/purpose of the importance of the box and how to use the box in maturing in ones spiritual life and becoming more thankful by writing a note each day of the month for one thing you thank God for and place it in the box. At the end of the year read through the notes and find yourself thanking God again for everything He had done, i.e. a stroll in the park, a surprise visitor, a smile that brighten a strangers day, and other times He provided peace beyond understanding to deal with a difficult situation. One will see that they have many reasons to thank God. Many people have told me that I should sell these boxes. My answer to them is, "It would take all of the joy of making them. I love making them and they are truly a mental stress reliever for me. Going from two on the go careers and adjusting to retirement wasn't easy at first but I believe keeping busy doing constructive things and living your retirement is what will keep you alive. Did I mention my wife and I travel alot and go on cruises often. So, live your retirement don't vegetate.
Sempi Fi
Frank Gembicki, M/Sgt. USMC Ret. As you would guess, the drinking never solved anything, it just made things worse. My closest brother who had similar issues did succeed in taking his own life. He, through his actions was able to put a stick up my ass and allowed me to see what would eventually happen to me if I didn't wake the hell up. I started counseling and seeing my local priest for spiritual guidance. Today, although I still struggle, I'm in much better shape and I work daily through prayer for the strength to see my grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up to become adults. I want to go back to work but I don’t want to do customer service. When I got out, I went to trade school it realized my anxieties skyrocketed from dealing with these kids. Customer service was crucial while active duty but once I started working on the floor, I don’t want to please people. I don’t even want to answer to anyone. I don’t want to explain myself. It only got worse when COVID hit. As much I want to go back to work, I have to constantly tell myself it is okay to make a medical appointment, call and ask questions about my accounts and why they’re taking more money, call and see if someone is qualified to fix my car, etc. it’s even worse as a female because I feel like I’m not supposed to know things that are meant for the “professional” nor am I to ask questions. Meditation, realizing the bigger picture and hopeful for a positive end result (along with food and maybe some coffee with meds) help me get on the phone and call people. When I knew that he was safe and secure, I would also take time to scoot out to the backyard to garden and take in the sights and sounds around our home which was not only therapeutic but provided for the much needed physical exercise.
I also wrote articles for our Church's monthly magazine on prayer to encourage others and sent out notes and birthday cards to our family to keep them in the loop.
For his mental health, keeping him calm, reassured and keeping him abreast of family visits and other details helped him, especially when depression would try to creep in. Soft music, especially the classics, would keep us both upbeat. We also took day long respite trips, whether visiting family, a picnic in the mountains or a drive to beach which kept him from being confined/restricted to the house but safe from Covid. These trips were super restorative!
At night, it meant the noise level had to be calm and peaceful for restful sleep. If it’s support, I can move with grace to who that might me or posting in a support group. After many years, antidepressants and benzodiazepines provided no relief, so I turned to talk therapy. That helped keep me alive, but once the session ended, I was unable to put whatever I learned into practice. So, I decided to try yoga but that did not help me. Then I joined a gym and exercised to the point that I a highly anxious, fit person. I took to the internet to look for yet another solution and found-out about meditation. I started with guided meditation I downloaded free from the net. It seemed boring and tedious, but I read that you have to work at it two times a day for 20-minutes, and so I gave it a shot. The same as antidepressants, it took about 60-days of persistent meditation before I felt a slight sense of calm. Another 30-days later, I began to feel moments of peace and felt relaxed while meditating. I began to experience with music, mediation for sleep, and 10-minute meditation sessions throughout the day (when possible). IT HELPED IMMENSELY. When I wake up in the morning, I close my eyes and "check-in" with myself - I look for those areas of my body that hold tension, relax them, and jump out of bed to get on with my day knowing that I can always calm myself by just closing my eyes and CHOOSING to be calm. Does it sound like too much trouble/ time to get results? Well, for me it took as long as SSRIs to achieve better results without side effects, and I am no longer dependent on benzodiazepines. I still see my psychiatrist every 2-3 months, but self-monitoring my mental well-being through mediation is probably the most important event of my day. Try it - you have nothing to lose but the time you probably spend worrying about things that will most likely never come to pass. And, if it does not work for you, note that perhaps medication, exercise, a new purpose in life (e.g., volunteering at your local homeless shelter) a new hobby, etc. may be your solution. Most important to so look for that one thing that you do for yourself which helps you understand that your mental well-being is key to a a peaceful, well-lived life. I joined the Masons which helped. As a Mason, I have encouraged other veterans to join or find similar groups that provide mental and emotional support. We currently have a Friday night cigar group that we call Group Therapy. After a long week, we gather together, share some fellowship, and enjoy some ball busting. But, we also use this time to share stories of the challenges from the prior week. And get input from each other as to better ways to deal with life as a whole. We have used Masonry as a positive guide to what we strive to become as individuals and as a group. "Have you made a difference today?" We all hope that we can answer that we have. All my Emotional Support Pets were rescues and they have graced my life; they have actually rescued me. Up until a couple of years ago, I had more than one E.S.P. My need to nurture is what keeps me going. I am compelled to be a warrior for them. I even have difficulty writing this story without getting emotional. Since 2019, we have experienced an eviction of our home of 31 years, we have been homeless, and lost two of my Fur Babies due to old age and a tragedy. The tragedy seemed to set me back spiritually, emotionally, and my mental health suffered. If not for my surviving pets, I do not know how I would have dealt with the darkness. From 2019, we have moved 3 times and the fight continues where we currently reside. I have one senior Fur Baby with me and she is also a warrior. My need to nurture is very strong, which keeps my head ‘above water.’ During the years of raising two daughters, my goal was to raise them well where they could care for themselves and have strength of character. My PTSD was not acquired during my enlistment but happened in a trauma in 2012. That is when my world was turned upside down. What helps my mental health everyday is to have the same goals. I now have 3 goals a day. Besides my Fur Baby, pet at least one dog, learn something new, and laugh at least once a day. The intention of meeting these goals every day has become a welcomed distraction but the battle to vanquish the darkness does linger. Not for money but mainly because I am the sole breadwinner for my family of 6 with a wife and 4 small children. After years of working full time plus overtime in addition to covering every shift under the moon whether it was first, second, or even third shift I began to feel the fatigue. Fatigue from work. Fatigue from making family time. Fatigue from lack of sleep from an inconsistent sleep pattern. Fatigue from homework, school projects, and fundraisers. I still had to make time for my spouse. When all that was done; I was mentally spent. Where was the time for myself. So I made a conscious decision to make time for me. Every month I have a me day. I sleep in late, eat my favorite foods, and I do an activity that I enjoy. Whether it be fishing, or watching a good movie, or going bowling with the guys. It has made a tremendous difference in my stress level. It gives me something to look forward to without taking away from my other responsibilities. Best decision I ever made. With growing up with a faith in God and trying my best to live a Christian life I found I had to stay the course of living and walking by faith. This was and is who I am and it’s what I do. It has been painful, it has rocked me, and has affected my wife who is the love of my life. Notably, we made a vow to each other to stay together for better or worse. This could be in the form of practicing mindfulness or yoga, doing something that brings me joy, or just by saying no. As a pleaser, I would often say yes to others when asked to do something, attend an event, etc. This would frequently leave me feeling like I've spread myself too thin. I was the one that others turned to for so many things because they knew I was dependable. Recently, I have learned to just say no. And I found that the world didn't end when I did this. Also, I didn't disappoint anyone. I thought I wouldn't be valued if I said no. But that just isn't the case. I am still asked to assist with things or to attend gatherings/events, but saying no gives me more freedom and more choice in my own life. Clayton 7881559

PTSD is real! Being advised by official VA correspondence that "the USAF enlisted non-flyer did not see combat" was a wakeup call for me. Two one-year tours in Republic of Vietnam (Feb 62-Feb 63 at Tan Son Nhut AB and Feb 69-Feb 70 at Bien Hoa AB) dodging "incoming" on a 24-hour basis would have proven that VA DENIER WRONG! I also have an U. S. Army Outstanding Unit Award for Supervising the "Passenger Service" Operating Location at 90th Replacement Unit, Long Binh Army Post, RVN in my "spare time". The bus ride several times a week to and from the units was mostly like playing Dodge Ball with the stray incoming mortars along the route. This was a first-time rude awakening for many Army personnel just downloaded from an inbound "Freedom Bird" and being transported to Long Binh. Therefore, I prioritize my mental health by celebrating my persistence and stick-to-it nature and winning over such VA Deniers with documentation and ability to put real facts, truths, and circumstances on paper. For example, Mortars or Rockets landing inside Large Aircraft Revetments and creating explosive situations did not bode well for Base Fire Fighter Units nor the "Auxiliary Firemen" (me and others) assigned to help. Rocket Strikes resulted in Exploding Aircraft long after the barrage ended. In addition to multiple daily incidents I could relate, the January 5, 1970 attack on the Bien Hoa AB Passenger, Freight, Hazardous Cargo and Barracks areas of the Det 8, 8th Aerial Port Squadron facilities would prove enough excitement for any one tour. Therefore, I attend with glee, commiseration, enjoyment, refreshment, recognition and so many other "I told you so's", a weekly Veteran Administration (VA) Veteran's Center meeting among fellow PTSD and many other "Combat" related and inflicted wounded veterans. After these meetings among fellow afflicted, many still being denied full recognition mostly due to inability to put into words a coherent oral or written narrative of their experiences and mental war wounds I feel refreshed. Many have been diagnosed (as I was) by VA psychiatrists and/or psychologists and medicated and enrolled in supposedly helpful after diagnosis help. These meetings help me keep my VA recognized PTSD within boundaries that allow me to function. I try to help fellow attendees in writing truthful, complete, sometimes frightening, always stressful to the relater, written narratives that have helped several fellow combat veterans achieve hard earned VA percentages. I hope I have not strayed too far from the gist of the question posted but writing about my Vietnam experiences contributes in some ways to my coping and healing! Response by CMSgt Elbert E.
