Personally it didn't bother me since I wasn't close to mine but most of my buddies were very sad to not be able to go home for the holidays. CAMPBELL, KY. He would come home home at night and tell me how the guys in the barracks were not going going home and we always celebrated Christmas. I asked him if he wanted to have some friend over, I love to cook and bake, and he said he would ask. So our place was not that big, but we borrowed a couple of chairs, and I bought a big ham, we had 3 soldiers over. They had such a Great time, watched football, I was so glad to see Happiness and them eat from the Buffett I put out. It warmed my heart that we could let others in to keep the loneliness away. They shared stories of their families. We played cards and games. I had such a good time too. I will never forget that Christmas. My husband came home one day shortly after Christmas and Handed me 3 cards. They were thank you cards from the soldiers telling me it was the Best Christmas they had in a long time and won't forget it. I won't either. They generally allow you to go home (although leave us always considered a privilege and not a right) but they make you jump through an exhausting amount of hoops to get the approval to leave and make sure to keep you at work as long as possible the day before. They hate to give up that control of knowing you're in the general vicinity. They also threaten to take holiday leave away weeks beforehand. Holidays can be more stressful and nearly impossible to plan (plane tickets, family gatherings) because of the threats to take it away, it's almost more work/frustration than it's worth going home. When you are home, you can't relax and are worried something will happen to your vehicle/ bad weather for flight and you'll be in trouble for getting back late. But if you do stay in the barracks, it's miserable and sad, most everyone that stays basically drinks the whole time and you wish you had gone home but now it's too late. Holidays meant so much to my wife before entering the Navy. Even in the Church where she was going to on active duty, all the guys there on active duty stationed there got invited to people's homes for the occasions, but not her, the only woman there on active duty. My wife spent 10 years on active duty and got out to take care of her mother who had debilitating back problems. We got married 2 years later and I found that she was very depressed over the holiday seasons for many years because of her being made to stand duty on every holiday the whole time she was in. It was almost like PTSD and maybe it was. Nothing you did could cheer her up or get her out of the holiday depression. Thankfully the last few years have been better, after 26 years of marriage, and thoughts of suicide have passed, but this year the depression returned when she filed for compensation and had to dredge so much bad stuff up again that had happened to her and around her like this, seeing someone get killed, and being in a movie theater when someone started shooting. Perhaps it will get better in the future again after this. Professional counseling didn't help, and she only opens up to me and I to her. I try to make every holiday very special for her. One tree, one Big dinner, one everything. It sounded crazy, we kept it a secret, as much as we could, whose house would the tree go in? Lol. We all had small children. I had 2, so we decided me. They each had three, orv2 and expecting. They did all their shopping, money was tight, we got gifts from home, and I told my family what we were doing, and they said huh!! I said , we don't need 3 trees, we can get more food, gifts, and enjoy. We put the tree up and husband's came in from the field. Only to find out there was one tree. It did not go over well with one husband at first, but then when he found out how much he was saving, it became special. We had a Beautiful Christmas eve, I putbout all kinds of snacks, the kids played and fell asleep, and we enjoyed egg not. We decided what time to come over to open Christmas. My husband wanted to video tape the memory, as we had purchased a camcorder recently. What a thrill, paper, wrappings, you name it, so much fun. My girlfriends surprised me with breakfast for us all. I used to open that jewelry box as a child, just to hear the music and see the twirling ballerina dance, so that sound had so many happy memories attached to it. I then married another active duty Marine and trying to get home for the holidays was so expensive plus we were not from the same area so we couldn't be 2 places at once. As a young active duty couple, we decided that our tiny apartment would become the home away from home for a few friends that weren't able to go home for the holidays. Waking up on Christmas morning with fellow Marines curled up on the floor in their issued sleeping bags helped us to realize that family isn't just blood, it's who you choose to make your family. Even after 34 years of marriage, we still have not had a true family Christmas with both sides of the family and yet we don't feel like we are missing out. Yes, everyone misses home and their loved ones during this time, but that is one of the many things my brothers and sisters in arms have in common.

While deployed over and over during most every holiday or special event, I have come to realize that the people to my left and right are experiencing the same emotions and troubles. That to me is the thing that helps me in those times, coming together with a common woe in my opinion brings you closer to your brothers and sisters. We are all the same, feel the same, go through the same things, and we are now ever closer to each other.

I will always have the backs of my buddies as they have mine at a monuments notice. What I finally settled on regarding the one thing from the holidays only people from the military would understand is “freedom to give and freedom to receive”. When in places of the world like Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa, etc handing out supplies to those in the community, and witnessing the appreciation for the “little things”, it gives a whole new meaning to the concept of FREEDOM, and the choices we have with it. Yes, missionary teams may witness a subset of this, but for military members it’s different - we are giving possibly the ultimate sacrifice for doing what we do, as sometimes it’s unwanted by the recipients despite them being in need. Missionaries go where they’re invited, military goes wherever they’re told to go, even during the holidays, giving of themselves a glimpse of what freedom may resemble to those encountered. Being away from home and family is one of the most difficult aspects of serving in the military, especially during the holidays. It can be especially challenging for those who are deployed or stationed far from their loved ones, or for those who are serving in combat zones or other high-stress environments.

Despite the challenges, military personnel must maintain readiness and be prepared to respond to any situation that may arise. This means that they may have to work on holidays, or be on call even when they are off duty. While this can be difficult, it is a necessary part of their service and an important way that they protect and defend their country.

Homesickness is another common experience for military personnel during the holidays. Being away from home and the familiar comforts of family and friends can be difficult, especially during a time of year when people are typically surrounded by their loved ones. Coping with homesickness can be challenging, but there are ways to stay connected with family and friends, such as through phone calls, video chats, and other forms of communication.

Finally, the holidays can be a difficult time for military personnel who have experienced the loss of a fellow service member. The loss of a friend or loved one who was serving in the military is a devastating experience that can be especially difficult to cope with during the holiday season. While it may never be easy to deal with such a loss, it is important to remember that the military is a close-knit community, and there are resources available to support those who are grieving.

Overall, the holidays can be a challenging time for military personnel, but they are also a time to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made and to appreciate the freedoms that have been protected. While the experience may be different for military personnel, it is no less special and meaningful, and it is a time to be thankful for all that they do to keep our country safe. I acquired a relentless, and strong relationship with fellow veterans. Not having family, and loved ones around to hug,and create memorable moments with; puts a veteran in a place of “missing out”. I was fortunate to have a Support Unit of my fellow veterans. We all wore the same uniform inside(feeling), and outside(proud). The experience of having other people like myself missing holidays without family was accepted. We(the soldiers)made our time with each other very memorable. Now as I live as a honorable veteran; I have Army stories to tell my loved ones, about those loved veterans who have served honorably for a country we live inside, and love. While some family members only see each other once or twice a year on holidays, they still have the option to see them. Active duty military members may not get to see any of their extended family for years at a time-depending on many military job related factors. Military people have an appreciation for freedom and for family that civilians may not have, simply due to the challenge we face of being away from loved ones and focused on doing our jobs with pride and dedication. It's as if we give up our freedom to be with family whenever we want to, so that all the families in America will have the chance to be together. Then we hope and long to be with those people we left behind, especially on holidays when we may be deployed or we may literally be in combat. Home time during the holidays with family represents everything we fight for in the armed forces. I am so grateful to be a Navy veteran and an American, because I know how to appreciate both my family and my freedom thanks to all that I sacrificed.
