I was originally a 46Q, but just transitioned into the new 46S combined MOS.

As Public Affairs, we are typically centered around events such as award ceremonies, promotions, specific training exercises (JRTC, DRX, et.c.) and DA photos. All events typically feature a combination of photography and video. Nearly every training exercise we cover also includes an on-camera interview with a SME.

Additionally, we also handle all media inquires pertaining to our state's NG and are responsible for, and control, public press releases and/or contact with news agencies. Whether a soldier of a unit is private, or the commanding officer, they are not authorized to speak to the media without one of us present.

We operate directly under what's called JFHQ (Joint Force Headquarters) in the NG. Our unit commander is a major, who answers directly to a colonel. PAO units are typically small and tight-knit. We serve a weird role in the military where you will encounter field-grade and general officers on a regular basis - not to mention warrants.

A basic understanding of video and photography is recommended prior to attending MOS school at Fort Meade, but there are many who simply learn along the way. I believe the new school is exactly three months long. As a previous reclass myself, I recommend taking advantage of the weekends off and traveling. The DMV tri-state area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) is pretty fun during spring through early fall.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything else.
