SGT Private RallyPoint Member4229104

I’m currently a 92F and before that I worked logistics in the Marine Corps. When I joined the Army I was only able to select the severely undermanned jobs and I want to reclass, my retention window opens up this year and I’ve been thinking if I should switch to 88N (which is the equivalent to my job in the Marines) mp, cid and dog handler. I’m almost done with my degree in criminal justice and I plan on pursuing a career in law enforcement after the military back home in Michigan. Any input is encouraged, thank you. What route should I pursue, 88N, MP, CID or dog handler?2018-12-23T02:39:46-05:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member4229104

I’m currently a 92F and before that I worked logistics in the Marine Corps. You don't need to finish your degree before you apply, you only need. 60 SHs.Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 23 at 2018 3:22 AM2018-12-23T03:22:24-05:002018-12-23T03:22:24-05:00SSgt Private RallyPoint Member4229692

I am in the same situation myself. I would go Dog handler, You still get the same training as MP. You may have more qualifications to look better than that other guy and get the job in the civilian world. Plus, you get to train dogs, who does not want to do that.Response by SSgt Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 23 at 2018 9:48 AM2018-12-23T09:48:30-05:002018-12-23T09:48:30-05:00SFC Josh Weatherbie4230936

It doesn’t matter what MOS you choose in the military if you’re exiting anyways....Michigan has their own set of standards for police, see below....

https://www.michigan.gov/mcoles

I spent 12 years as an 88N and am now in law enforcement...6 years now. Dog handler will be useful in LEO but they also have their own requirements for dogs and handlers so again, that wouldn’t really help more than your service to Our Country.

CID could be a great option as you get the best of both worlds, military and LEO, but eventually if you plan on getting out you’ll need to do State Training anyways.

That being said, as an 88N, which you’ve been since USMC, would be an easy transition which would allow you to get through AIT easier.

Good luck in your future!

You might want to pass over dog handler because they are required to approach suspicious vehicles in combat zones, typically car bombs, If you have a family awaiting your safe return it's not ideal. MP means going to Missouri for MP training. You'll qualify on many weapons and can be placed anywhere in the US, including Hawaii and Alaska. You'll mainly be patrolling family housing areas and gates. Excellent experience for transferring to civi police. I grew up on base and the MPs spent time largely with bar fights, domestic violence, AWOL investigations and there was MPs all around the playground where the kids played (to make sure they wore helmets when riding their bike, etc. ) it looked fun but I wasn't OK with patrolling Baghdad so I did something more in my comfort zone.Response by CPL Sarah Verity made Dec 24 at 2018 12:04 PM2018-12-24T12:04:32-05:002018-12-24T12:04:32-05:002018-12-23T02:39:46-05:00
