What can you do if you are having physically symptoms and are asking for help but all they are doing is pushing a “psychiatric” solution and are being put up for MEB? How can you get the proper diagnosis if they will not let you seek other help or provide proper help to get to the cause of your health problem?

1, Many physical symptoms are manifested because of mental problems. 2. You can on your own dime and seek a second opinion outside. 3. If a professional has recommended MEB, it will be an uphill fight to quash it.

Yes some physical symptoms are manifested that way, however the medical and mental health team have ignored them. We have done a few test and they are coming back ok, so instead of trying to look into why the physical issues are still here and getting worse, they have decided on a psych meb. The meb is fine but the reason for it is not the correct one. we have been treating the secondary mental issue for months now, almost 8. The physical problems are still persisting. We have tried for a second opinion doctor and when we saw one we just had a conversation and that was considered the “second opinion”. We have been trying to get help since this started and I feel we are being brushed off and that psych is an easy answer. The first appointment to start this journey within 10 min the Primary care doctor was ready to write a prescription for anxiety meds and call it a day. With what we have been through for the past 8 months, after 9years given to the military, recent awards received leading up to this onset, and exemplary file, I would of thought more medical help would be given to a veteran. The reason for my post was to try and find other people who have been through the same problems and see how they went about it. I’m just trying to do the best I can and provide the most help to my husband.

Responding to the question as you framed it: if your are a service member, none. In the military's eyes you are not the best judge of your healthcare needs and the doctor, or whatever is the subject matter expert. You will do what he/she says, end of story. If you are a dependent, you are at liberty to seek civilian medical attention but it will be at your own expense. It's been a while since I was in but back then, if the military could treat you and you went off-base, CHAMPUS would not cover you. (Oh, boy. I'm dating myself by mentioning CHAMPUS).
Realistically, though, if you believe your doctor has been negligent in your treatment or has mismanaged your case, you can complain. Just bear in mind that picking a fight with an army doctor usually does not end well for the complainer. Lots of reasons for this and none of them very good but real just the same.

Nicole D I am confused on the statement they are not letting you seek help- or provide it. You can ask for a second opinion- you can also go off base. I can't tell what branch this is tied to- but the VA is an option. It will not cease the MEB however if that case has already started moving forward. This is just a guess, but the provider would have to be from the mental health portion to push the psychiatric solution. That or you have been seen by a mental health rep?

We have received some help with having rest run to try and find some answers to the physical ailments. After they came back negative that was it, they would only look at the mental side of things then. We have been treating the “mental” side of things for over 8months and the physical issues are still present and worsening. The point of my post was to find anyone who as gone through a similar experience and see how they handled it. The meb is fine and necessary at this point. I just want it to be given under the correct diagnosis instead of the easy answer of a psychiatric diagnosis.

Nicole D - unfortunately your second opinion was negative it appears. Was this in a civilian hospital. It will be hard to refute a medical opinion and another that concludes negative findings. That is not the easy diagnosis, but without knowing what tests were ran and if they were duplicated you may be on the hook unless you find a provider at your own expense that can refute the others. As the medical admin I know a few people will always dispute findings even though the medical diagnosis supports the doctor. I am not qualified to make that call, only handle the administration side of them. The military has a different standard and the VA may be a good place to start and advocate for your rights.
