Early on in life while I was searching for any truth or philosophical approach which represented reality, I was an atheist who explored and read as much as I could on Satanism, witchcraft, Buddhism - Tantric primarily but also looked into Shintoism, Hinduism, Ancient Egyptian religion, nihilism, Darwinism, etc. I fought hard against Christian teaching and teachers; but, I came to realize that all of my efforts to arrive at and make my own truth ended in dismal failure. The words of the Bible which angered me in the past rang true in September 1987. I see all religions as the creative explanation of the universe by certain peoples at certain times, to the best of their limited scientific understanding at that particular time and place. The ancient Mayans had a far better understanding of astronomy than the ancient Egyptians and their religions reflected that difference in their view of the earth and the sun, as just one example.

I believe that most religious rules are also based on the time and place that the religion came from. Jews are prohibited from eating pork because 6,000-years-ago they realized that people who ate pork tended to get trichinosis while those who didn't,did't, and the religion includes a rule that takes that into account.

Of course none of the people who wrote all of those holy books for all of those religions had the benefit of modern science, and so as science moves forward and answers more and more of our fundamental questions, religion is pushed into a smaller and smaller space. Crops no longer flourish or wither based on the anger of a rain god and hurricanes no longer come from the anger of a storm or sea god. We know that birth defects aren't caused by a curse on the family or the disfavor of a deity, and we know that humans have evolved over millions of years from simpler and less evolved creatures than being spontaneously created in our modern form from a pinch of dust (man) and his rib (woman) some 6,000-10,000-years-ago.

I am so glad I was born in this age of knowledge rather than under the darkness of ignorance and blind faith.Response by LTC Private RallyPoint Member made Sep 20 at 2016 11:54 AM2016-09-20T11:54:27-04:002016-09-20T11:54:27-04:00MSgt Private RallyPoint Member1909459

I'm a cafeteria catholic. While I can appreciate that there are many views, I will remain true to Catholicism. My mother was given to the church as an orphan. They took her in when no one else would. The church my father used to go to as a boy laughed st his socks so he never went to church again until he went to see my brother make his first communion. It took years.

After seeing the atrocities from the concentration camps and traveling around the world in the Air Force (initially the USA which became the Army Air Core) he swore he would never have a child,
The only thing my mother wanted was a family. And to see the beauty of Hawaii that her friend Myra Agape painted verbal pictures about while we lived in California. Around 1963.

In the military, there were black socks and white socks,.

In his sock draw were argyles that often my mother would darn or knit. Why do you ask? Assuming that you have a valid answer, I'll respond (otherwise you might think that I'm ashamed or fearful). Born a Christian (Missouri Synod Lutheran), I spent most of my youth as an unaffiliated deist. Converted to Judaism at age 34 (felt that I found a community I could be proud of and the love of my life). Was prepared to be an observant Jew, but my wife wasn't all that concerned. So, technically I suppose, I'm still an unaffiliated deist. My Mother was Lutheran. They got married at a time when that was frowned upon. I went to both churches as a young man. My Mother had the primary influence on me and so I spent most of my time in a Wisconsin Synod Lutheran Church (the most conservative larger Lutheran Church body). My Dad never changed nor did Mom. When I got married (almost 50 years ago), I married a Catholic girl. Not a big deal at that time, no courage required. We never discussed religion. Eventually Diane became Lutheran. We are still Lutheran today but a member of a more liberal synod (ELCA).Response by SP5 Dennis Loberger made Aug 6 at 2019 9:37 PM2019-08-06T21:37:12-04:002019-08-06T21:37:12-04:00LTC Ernest Edge7180728

ShamanismResponse by LTC Ernest Edge made Aug 13 at 2021 6:48 PM2021-08-13T18:48:48-04:002021-08-13T18:48:48-04:00SFC Joe S.
