I inherited a rag bag bunch (Squad) on the way to Desert Storm....had to train their behinds and lead them by the example. This group started out as a very dysfunctional team but by the time we came back we were running on all cylinders!

I was an SGT and was Squad LDR. during Desert Storm (1st one) was Assit TM LDR (SGT) The Tm LDR was an SFC (unit had no other place for them).

SSG, I took over a Combat Engineer squad in '91- There was talk we might be called up for Desert Storm, but never happened. As I was doing my initial counseling I got a surprise, one of the guys was shocked, he said he'd never received any kind of counseling from the prior Squad leader. At least I got started on the right foot. The next year my squad came in first in our squad competition, all the guys received an AAM which was well deserved. It's the one medal I really cherish.

Became an Infantry squad leader when I was a CPL. in 1986, 3rd BN. 7th Infantry at Ft. Benning. We were a rapid deployment unit.

I was a SSG when I took over a Squad in 1996. I was a SSG in a PSG when I deployed platoon in October 2001.

I first became a squad leader as a Spc 4 my first tour in Korea 1979. Then at Ft Hood as a Sgt in 80. After that it was either as PSg or in OPs with a brief stint as a SSG 1Sgt (new unit just starting) until we got someone in with more rank.
