At around the 12 minute mark, the cannons fire. It gets my blood flowing. To think that Artillery can be used in the creation of something beautiful. So I ask What Piece of music stirs your soul? For me there are many, but this is near the top.

The 1812 Overture is one of my favorites, but my all time favorite is "I Can See Clearly Now," by Johnny Nash, 1972.

I suppose many have good reason to find the sound annoying. But never while playing Amazing Grace. In that one piece it really shines...

The song itself has an amazing backstory. It was written by a sea captain who left the slave trade after his last voyage in which he feared he was lost in a violent storm. Falling to his knees, he prayed for salvation promising to be a better man.

The interesting part is that I don't even consider it a Christian song. It can stir anyone's soul regardless of belief.

The pan flute music of Zamfir, the Native American sounds of R. Carlos Nakai. Ladysmith Black Mombasa. Anything Simon & Garfunkel. Gentleman Jim Reeves. The singular piece of music that grabs me by the throat is Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, the background music for much of the movie PLATOON.

Alicia Keys when she sings with just some back up singers and herself playing the piano. My I-tune counters says I have listened to it over 200 times. I saw her perform it like this during halftime of the NBA All-Star game. I love to hear the artist with just a piano or guitar.

When I joined the Army I was an O2E - trombone player. I played with the 399th Army Band at Ft Lost-in-the-Woods. That year(1983) we did the 4th of July concert at the post stadium. The end of the concert we played the 1812 Overture and had 105s doing the cannon part. The 1SG was out signaling the guns - they hit the cannon parts right on time. There was a slight breeze blowing the cannon smoke across the stadium and the crowd went wild. I've never experienced anything like that sense in my life. Playing, being part of this was truly something.

I still stand for the Marines Hymn, doesn't matter where I am. Come from a very small town (population 952) only about 40 living veterans. Only Two Marines. I was in the town bar with my wife, daughter, and her 4 kids (all under 8). We were closest to the TV. We were having a burger and the hymn came on during an old black and white movie on TV. I snapped to attention. My wife, daughter and two oldest grandkids did too. Then my oldest grandkid asked why we stood, and I explained. She then asked me if everybody else that stood was a Marine too. I asked what she meant. She confessed to looking around and told me that half the bar (about a dozen other people) came to attention too.

I know almost everyone that was there and went around asking why they stood. I got pretty much the same answer from everyone, civilian or veteran. "We don't know, you and Pete did. So we did." Pete is a retired 1st Sgt, that owns the bar. The practice has spread and now the whole town stands for the Marines Hymn at football games, not knowing why?
