What MOS would you recommend to reclass into? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-mos-would-you-recommend-to-reclass-into

My re-enlistment window is about to open next month and I'm really considering to reclass. I'm currently a 91B SGT with almost 6 years TIS. My MOS is currently balanced for SGT's, so if I decided to reclass it would have to be into a STAR MOS. My GT score is 120 so I'm good on that. What would you guys recommend? It would be great to hear from someone who has recently reclassed into a STAR MOS as well. If you re-class into an MOS only because it is a Star one, but don't like the job you will be doing, it's going to be a looooong six years, and you likely will come to have a negative attitude, your NCOERs will get worse, and you won't want to re-up again the end of that contract.

Take this piece of advice from someone who been there. In both the civilian and military worlds, at some point, I have had jobs I hated. I was good at them, like you, I maxed the ASVAB in all areas (not only the GT, which where you get your 120 score from, but ALL of the areas). In every case where I didn't like my job, I developed a piss-poor attitude, and all my annual job performance reviews went into the toilet. At least on the civilian side, I could, and eventually did, quit that job. But on the military side, I couldn't quit the job I hated, I had to wait it out. That deployment was the longest year of my life!

Bottom line: find a job you will like doing, and do that job, regardless of what MOS it is. Because I know Soldiers with higher GT scores than myself but their other line scores are lower than mine. Anyway, I reclassed to 35F which was a Star MOS at the time. It's a great job because we deal with All Source Intel, so I was lucky that I chose this MOS to re-class into. Also, check out 29E which is Electronic Warfare Specialist, heard great things about that MOS. Too bad 51C isn't on the Star list because that is where it's at. My brother is a 51C and he says it's outstanding. As a 35F, I do receive some cool training, but not really any certifications. 29E and 51C will get you a bunch of certs which are a must anyway, but you will be very marketable when you get out. Don't worry, you'll hate that one too. The ones with fast promotions like combat MOSs, require hard work. The ones that aren't harder than average to get into, require hard work to get promoted in. The ones that don't require either of those, require you work mostly outside your MOS most of the time.

People come into my office and ask all the time about a new MOS. They want one that doesn't require a packet t get into and has great promotions, plus translates into a civilian job. I ask why they haven't been promoted and where they sit amongst their peers on the trend report. If you're not in the top 10% or less, you're just not competitive for promotion. What are you 50m - 300m target objectives that you'd like to accomplish? Consider where you are vs where you want to be....only you can answer that question. What areas interest you?

I'll give you an example: My friend is an Ivy League graduate and makes over $200K at a well-known tech corporation that may or may not manufacture the operating system that your computer is or is not using. He's well traveled but he's stressed out of his mind, and in his early 30's is about ready to have a breakdown because he's burned out.

Another friend of mine cleans carpets for a living and co-owns the business with his father; his sister runs the admin portion of the business out of her house. During the summer months, after working his "day job" he's a tandem skydive instructor (Kelly Craig out of Skydive Snohomish in Snohomish, WA). He has roughly 8,000 (yes eight thou-thou-thousand jumps). He's proficient in ASL and I was at the DZ one afternoon talking about a jumper that he was preparing to go out with. For her entire life she was deaf/hearing impaired and on her birthday decided to take the leap of faith. Nobody else could communicate with her in the aircraft so as a safety issue that has prevented her from even trying it.

Fast fwd, the aircraft dropped licensed jumpers out at the east DZ and on the way over to the west DZ (at the airport for "C" and "D"/"Tandem" rated jumpers could land, Kelly and the lady sat in the doorway of the aircraft, feet hanging in the wind for the 3-5 minute flight to the west exit point...chatting in ASL the entire time. When they landed, her husband saw the look of elation on her face for finally overcoming what once was a challenge. That elation quickly evolved into tears of joy and the most sincere embrace between she and Kelly and again between Kelly and the husband simply for the unforgettable gift that he had provided just by doing his job.

Talking with Kelly afterwards, recounting the event, he said, (paraphrased)"Yeah, cleaning carpets isn't the most sexy job but I get to work with my dad, spend time with him and it keeps the family close-knit. It also allows me to do this....and having an impact on people like that....that's what it's about. I love my job." I could tell that he was getting emotional too.

My question to you is, "What's going to get you there?"
