I was brand new to the BN then, so I "only" knew one of the KIAs from 507th Maintenance Co. (SGT Donald Walters, RIP).

Our BN Commander was shaken after that, as was the BDE Commander we were attached to.

The issue was that our Battalion became a "zero-defects" organization, in the worst possible way.

The lessons learned were lessons we have to re-learn every time we start a new major conflict: be good at basic Soldier skills. Don't be complacent. Never forget that we're going into someone else's neighborhood looking for a fight.

We will have to re-learn these lessons again the next time.Response by SFC Marcus Belt made Mar 18 at 2016 4:17 PM2016-03-18T16:17:34-04:002016-03-18T16:17:34-04:00CW3(P) Private RallyPoint Member1389474

Although im on the outside looking in it seems like the NCO's (not blaming them) should emphasize badic soldiering skill i.e. land nav, map reading and maintaining your weapon. These things i know needed to be stressed more in my unit. Unfortunately sometimes you dont worry about things until yoyre un a situation where certain skill may be needed.Response by CW3(P) Private RallyPoint Member made Mar 19 at 2016 6:53 AM2016-03-19T06:53:53-04:002016-03-19T06:53:53-04:00SPC Makissa Lewis1390183

Train both sexes to survive in combat.
