What job do you want (or now have, for those already retired) when you retire (from the military)?

At some point we all must exit the military. Some stay longer than others but we all go eventually. I am at 15 years right now and am already trying to nail down exactly what I want to do when I retire. I would really love to be a State Trooper but my Fiance argues that I have been shot at enough in my life and need to figure something else out. So lately I have been thinking about Game Warden, while they are not paid well I think that is something with some kind of structure, and something I would thoroughly enjoy.

What are your plans? What are your thoughts?

I found the job I wanted! I work for a nonprofit that supports the military community. I wanted to continue to give back to those I served with and I'm doing exactly that at Project Sanctuary!

As I left the military, I followed the mantra: pursue passion over provision. Try that and see where it leads you, Richard.

I still have 10 years left until I retire, however I already
have a plan started and slow going. I will get my Home Inspector License and
start a Home Inspector and Handyman business. Once I return from Germany I will
get my License, but I have started doing some small handyman jobs to make a few
dollars on the side.

Our command has a great releationship with the National Parks Service and they send out job listings monthly for this region. Not sure how that was set up but they prefer military since we are used to structure and enforcing rules. Just another idea to think about. I would also look into non-profits that help vets. They don't pay as much as a corporate job but the work is more rewarding. You might actually enjoy going to work every day.

As a financial coach and author, I teach people that our profession is a Soldier, but that we need to mind our own business (U Inc.). I recommend ensuring your skills/experience will translate to life after the Military. From day one, you should start creating a civilian resume and keep updating as your skills/education & exerpeince grows.

I strongly encourage starting a side business, which can create leveraged unearned income that will grow to replace your income.

I've started a non-profit to equip our Military to kill debt & create wealth, so that will be my job when I retire this year.

Upon retirement I plan on being a flight instructor somewhere down south (most likely Florida). Not sure whether or not I am going to work for someone or open my own flight school. During the off season, if there is one, I will be operating my concession business. I love flying and the concession business so neither really seem like work.

What if....you found something with structure, something that had real purpose, very rewarding in all aspects, and you had no cap or limitations? I honestly feel that the overwhelming majority of peoples aspirations are so low that anything sounds good 9 out of 10 times. Beach bum, smoking cigars, fishing, not doing jack...really? Has the military robbed of us of our purpose? We're here for but a short amount of time and THIS is the legacy you want to leave? I believe the problem is, you forgot how to dream. If I gave you a box of crayons and told you to draw a picture, you'd laugh, maybe cuss me out, but you surely wouldn't draw a picture. You might even say you can't draw well or don't know how to draw. Give a 10 year old the same tools and he/she will make a masterpiece. The tools are the same for all of us, YOU are the variable. Dream big, keep Hope alive, define your Purpose, LIVE your LIFE. Or go do something boring like...nothing. I'm not aiming this at any one person, but at everyone that has lost their ambition to be better. For f**ks sake, get up and go!

My plan is to go back to school for Engineering Management as it seems to be a fit for what I've done the past decade. I been told by many of the Civilians I've worked with that I can easily slip into a GS job with the Corps of Engineers but everything I think I'm a good fit for says BS mandatory. So since I got the GI Bill I figure the transition point between military service and civilian life would make an excellent spot to go back to school.

That being said I feel I have a strong network of peers and former Soldiers that are now out of the Army that if I wanted to I could get a job with.

Good question, I'm still thinking about this. I once thought of being a high school guidance counselor to talk to teens on their academic status and achievements.

I most likely won't go this route but I had always thought it would be great to keep teens on track in HS. Other than that, I may just hang at the house for a week or two before I decide to look for something to keep me busy during the day.

Personally I would have liked to go back home to Montana and just be a Sportsman and Gentleman Rancher but, In my case it was life situations that led me to what I am doing albeit my experience and education is also in my line of work! As an E-6 there was really no way that I could live off my retirement only. Work is a must, so what I did was to stay on the Government Tit, I stayed in the location of my last duty station. There are many good Government occupations out there, if Quality assurance, Logistics or Equipment Specialist is in you line of experience I suggest that you take DAU course AQ 101 online and pursue a position in DCMA. DCMA positions are all over the country and once you have Level 2 in DAU the skies the limit. Networking is a must, get your name out there and surround yourself with the people in the area of occupation you want to pursue. I was fortunate enough to walk into my same job from Friday Uniform and on Monday Slacks and shirt.

I was hoping to get somewhere in HR field and I do have to go back to school to be more competitive. I knew it was going to be hard but wow. For now, my budget guru says we can live on my retirement and VA disability and if I want to go to school full time I can. I might just go down to the pizza shop down the street, they're hiring drivers for 10$-$15/hr. I might get the higher rate since I can deliver on base. Win win I think, they do have decent pizza/wings.

This one may sound like I'm joking, but I seriously have given it some thought: Cruise ship nurse. Typically this job is done by contract (usually 6-12months), you are on the ship for a set period of time (usually 3-6 months at a time). You are considered a "ship's officer" so you get your own cabin, all meals are free and you get to use some of the ship's amenities when you are off. Work rotating schedule with some on-call time. While there can be some emergencies, most of the time you're dealing with minor owies and upset stomaches. Not bad for $3-4k a month.

Not a career thing, but a nice transition job unitl I settle into career #2...

Looking back at my last couple of years in the military, I had the motivation to get a job that has some kind of stability. I applied for a voc tech position but I was told that I needed a degree to teach. I already had x amount of classroom teaching as an Instructor. Civilian life was going to be challenging for me.

Since I had over 20 years in the active duty military, I knew that I had some habits that were conditioned over the years, in honing my craft for the service.

My military experience was not enough to get a civilian job in that career field without a degree.

So I became a life long learner in several colleges. This summer I am in between programs so I think I will take it easy, but keep a keen eye on the adjunct professor job market.

I like seeing new answers from people as this post grows in age.

I coach my sons little league team and last night was the start of a tournament. Every kid on the team kept asking if it was single or double elimination. My answer was, stop thinking about elimination and start thinking about winning, think about success. As we get older, we fear failure more and more....what will my friends, my family, my wife and kids, etc, think of me if I fail? Stop worrying about what others think, find your purpose, and accelerate. Fear of failure is what keeps us from taking action....but if nothing changes, nothing changes! Sometimes to break through, you have to get uncomfortable a bit. If you really want something (to spend more time with your kids than your co-workers, to volunteer more within the community, to have a lake house, etc) you have to get uncomfortable a bit and do what others don't or won't do. I spend about 2 hours every morning with my 11 month old before he goes to grandmas and I go to work. I've built that flexibility in and within 12-18 months I'll be a stay at home parent and won't have to worry about my employer downsizing, the economic ups and downs, location, weather...none of it matters with me. Set yourself up for your better future, for your families better future, and the future of generations to come. We're all great at talking about the American Dream but, rarely is action taken. Seize the day my friends! Action creates action....let's go!

I plan to stay in for 20, which will put me at 50 years old in 2022. Either I'll go back into the zoological veterinary medicine and research again as I was doing beforehand or I'll go into politics. I'm sick of Ivy League lawyers thinking they are uniquely qualified to run this country, especially concerning topics that are not their purview, like medicine, environmental science (not sensationalized environmentalism), economics, education, and the MILITARY. Lawyers have that greater grasp of the law, usually enabling them to find loopholes in the law.

I want to be a Civilian Police Officer. I started out as a Civilian Police Officer back in the 80s before I came on Active Duty and it was always my dream to be a Police Officer. Currently, I'm on my transition leave prior to my retirement and going through the Field Training Officer Stage for a City Police Force that is 25 minutes from where I currently live. So, I'm continuing to try and live my dream. So far, every day (as it was in the 80s), even the slow ones has been different, fun, and given me funny stories to tell.

My wife says I have not acted this outwardly happy since I was in an Airborne Unit back in the early 2000s.

I am a nurse...was an Army medic before that. Medical is where I will continue to be. I had not really thought about what I wanted to do with it until my deployment in 2010/11.... Ironically enough, I had gotten my Master's Degree of Nursing, Healthcare Education in 2009... Did the degree as much as anything to hopefully pick up Major (nurse corps does not require it, does not require certification either....however if you look at the stats, those that get picked up have both...). During deployment to Afghanistan, I was actually brought on board to TEACH the Afghan Army PA Program and Nursing program as one of the clinical instructors. I really enjoyed it! Got back in time to apply as an adjunct professor for the local university College of Nursing. Did 2 years of part time moonlighting, 4 semesters. Had a great time! I am no gearing myself to try to be a Nursing Instructor full time upon my military retirement. Only 2 things to figure out....1. where in the world do we want to go (family has been following me, so I am giving them LOTS of input points!), 2. Who will hire me....end game is getting the job!

I think I would like to work overseas for a while. I would love to work somewhere in Europe or Australia, with Africa being my third choice. I still haven't gotten the travel bug out of my system, and I love everything about Europe. I don't care if it is working as a contractor, a DA civilian, or in private industry. I think either international marketing or transportation/logistics are my strongest skillsets, so it will be a job in one of those two industries. After a few years, I will settle on the gulf coast of Florida, and get a marketing or logistics job somewhere in or around Tampa. I only plan on working 15 years after I retire from the military. That will be enough time to pay off a house, become vested in a civilian company, and build up a 401K.

You really need to talk to and study that option a little more. I have a few friends who work in the field here in NC. Poachers here are just as bad as other parts of the country, they also carry heavy weapons and not for hunting.

After 30 years I was going to be a door greeter at Wally World, but they wanted me to work Security. Then they explained their "rules of engagement." Watch em pick stuff up and conceal it; continue to observe all the way out of the store, past the last point of sale; at that point you may stop and apprehend. If at any time the perp goes into a rest room or dressing room, you have lost eye contact and must drop pursuit. If you lose eye contact for any reason, drop pursuit.

So I went back to university and finished my degree in Psychology and worked Child Protective Services. I was really shooting for a degree in Counseling, but that was another year away and I wanted out of school. I wanted to go into counseling and work with recovery programs. Instead I worked with children. good job and retired at 62.

I was very fortunate to walk right into my dream job following military retirement. I joined a very reputable security company where many of my military buddies went after retirement. Our mission was to provide para-military protective forces to some of our nation's most critical national security assets and our employees, for the most part, are military veterans who are armed with military weapons and possess military equipment and serve both in CONUS and OCONUS.

Now, as I am contemplating retirement again, I am not sure what I want to do. I do know that I do not want to do "nothing"; plus, my wife of 43 years says that I cannot just "sit around the house". I am thinking about getting heavily involved in the Wounded Warriors Program or some such organization that helps military personnel.

It took me a while to get to where I am now, but it was a learning process. I retired in 2004 and walked into a great position writing combined arms doctrine for the Armor Center and School as a contractor. We wrote the first iteration of the BCT and BSTB manuals. I learned a lot about process and gaining stakeholder buy in. Then I wrote distance learning material for the Armor Center, USASMA, and USAREC. I learned how to apply the skills I learned in my bachelor's program. It was not until I started designing, developing and facilitating Casualty Notification Officer and Assistance Officer training that it dawned on me that I have a passion for learning and helping others learn. Which is what brought me to where I am today, I own my own training and consulting firm with both government and private sector customers.

After retirement I was able to link back up with some of my high school classmates. They all stated they knew I would end up in some kind of learning environment position. That really surprised me because I was a solid C+ student.

Like so many others, I had no clue what I truly wanted to do when I retired from the Navy (97). I took my communications/computer systems administrator skills to work at Guam Cable TV which put me on call 24/7 with a cell phone and pager strapped to me. Wasn't my cup of tea.

Then I attempted working with my brothers in a local foundry when we returned to Ohio. I soon found I was too old to be lifting as much weight as I did over 8 hrs.

Then I landed the dream job, County Veterans Service Officer, assisting veterans obtaining their VA benefits that they have earned while on active duty. The satisfaction of putting benefits/money into others pockets and to hear their praises is more than I could ever imagine. The goal is to retire in five years, but even then I'll be working part time in photography. Lots of free lance jobs available. re: Ohio Revised Code Title 5901 or Code of Federal Regulations 38 for more info.

Always continue as best as possible to remain current in education; would like to work at a workout facility in the meantime or buy a franchise like crunch fitness where i can workut for free. Heart health at a tier end career of the militry is very important especially with 2000 and prior Soldiers retiring out. All the things exposed too over multiple deployments long-term effects will begin to show up in the medical community over ht enext 20yrs so be as healthy as you can for the time being.

Nine years from now, I would like to see myself still involved with the Army as a counselor for Soldiers and family members. Hoping to finish all my education and credentials needed to do that while I'm still in. If not, I will open a pastry shop and bake everyday. Probably do Filipino food trucks also.

I have the job I want. I did 30 years of active duty, 26 of them in the counterintelligence field, so when I retired it seemed a good idea to try to continue in the field where I was most qualified. I was able to do that, and I've been working as a DA Civilian in counterintelligence since retiring from active duty. Now my goal is to work in this field - for Army - until I retire for good. I will hit 40 years of continuous service next June, and I'm very pleased about that.

Peer Support positions are on the rise, Thank God. It is good to have someone hold your hand to make the transition to the civilian side, especially if they have to medically retire you. The ability to have someone in your corner that has been there and done that is priceless.

1SG Private RallyPoint Member Great subject and good thinking on your part in beginning to plan early. For me, it's my current position working for the Army at Ft. Stewart, Ga. I manage our Installation Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and am the Operations Coordinator in the EOC in the event of Activation for a Crisis, Emergency or planned large scale event. I began as an Operations Specialist in the Installation Operations Center at Fort Sill in 2005, after returning spending 6 yrs in Gemany and Turkey working for the Air Force. Othe duties (take up most of my time) is the NIMS (Nat'l Incident Management system) Training Coordinator, tracking and monitoring the mandatory training of over 300 pesonnel across Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Air Field, all who have emergency management duties, from EOC staff, FD, LE, EMS, Hospital Staff, as well as Garrison Cdr, and his Garrison Staff. The training requirements are tough to maintain with the minimum acceptable at 90%. But that's the challenge and that what I enjoy.

The Emergency Management field has opened many doors for me and also offered so very good opportunities, though, I haven't been willing to re-locate at this time to accept them. I am a GS11 here at Ft. Stewart and other than Step-increases in salary, there is not much chance of promotion for me here as we have an Installation Emergency Manager (GS12) and not going anywhere anytime soon. I've have turned down several positions offered over the last year or so. GS12 move to DC, but I'm not moving to Washington DC for any kind of pay raise....just not doing it. More recent, a position going to Korea. Not that I didn't consider it or want it, however, as a newly wed, wife is very established in her position as a school teacher and LOVES where she is. We're not ready to pull up stakes at this time.

Training opportunites in the EM Field are endless; I'm a State certified Emergency Manager; Trained Resuce Specialist, Extraction specialist trained; Trained to hold serveral positions on and Incident Command both Command Staff and General Staff. Certified trainer in many EM related specialities and required related training.

It has worked out great for me. Still very involved in Army related issues; still getting to work with Soldiers and Leaders; most important to me is the feeling that though I've taken off the uniform, I'm still involved and a part of the Army! For me, I couldn't ask for anything more!
