One in the private sector that I started in 1991 and stayed with until 2007. Then moved to the public sector as an Army Civilian. In 1991 there weren't any "job boards." Found the job through networking with civilian contractors. In 2007, I used USAJobs to find civilian job with the Army. First, I taught technology classes at professional learning centers (computer programming and network administration). Interestingly, some employers sent non-technical people to learn programming and then hired me to write applications for them when they discovered how long it would take to train these employees to be competent programmers. Secondly, I used brokers. Some made up to 50% commissions on my placements and I still received over $100/hour for my time. It was worth it because they could be looking for opportunities while I serviced clients and didn't have time to look for the next gig. Only 10-15% of all jobs are filled like this. Many jobs on job boards aren't real vacancies, they are just trying to see what kind of pool is out there. The applicants are high, so the competition is stiff. You will be a lot more successful by having a plan: targeting the companies you want, doing your research, and networking with people in those companies to ask for advice, not necessarily ask for a job. It's a process but it pays off much more than just looking blindly.
