What is your opinion of the American Legion? I have a membership but never go. Do they really help Veterans or is it just a honky tonk?

You can't judge or condemn the American Legion just by a single post. Yes the Legion helps vets. They do quite a bit. Some posts have bars and others don't. It just depends

I just joined my local post. I've attended all the monthly meetings except for the first month I was a member. Was on vacation and out of the local area. Seems to be some bad blood between my post and the 2 VFW posts in town. I think if I needed assistance of some sort, they would be there.

It depends on the Post mine is much more active than my VFW Post. We have monthly meetings and they are well attended. They have helped Habitat Humanity, went and built ramps for poor DV's. They have run Memorial marches in honor of some of our fallen. They host/set up our city's Annual Vet day Parade and have for since 1919- last year we had 103 marching units.

If you are trying to get benefits from the VA and they are being difficult a Veteran's Service Organization can be a huge help. Whether it is the Legion, VFW or DAV they all have experts and attorneys to help Veteran's get what they deserve.

I am an Officer at my post, a lot of posts are just places to meet up and drink but we are trying to get our post back into a service organization and less of a vets bar. It all depends on the commanders intent.
