My go to in the field is the A1 Voltalert Electrical tester, great for testing if a circuit is live or not. I use a Fluke 117 to verify absence of voltage or see just what I do have available. After I got out, I bought a $30 off brand one and it does the same things the fluke did. Not sure of the model. It is a fairly decent one. Mostly I just it to test voltage and continuity in mail processing equipment.
