I was in security forces and although I was in law enforcement, I was shuffled out to the missle field due to shortages in manning on the security side. The weather was the biggest issue for me and others and in 1984 we got one of the biggest storms the area has recieved in its history at the time. We got stuck out in the field for 10 days which was 6 days more then we were suppose to be. It was worse for the missle capsule crew because they were also stuck in the hole for 10 days with no relief. It got to the point we ran out of food and had to break into the c-rats that were stored in the capsule at the time. Being a new england native I was use to snow and cold but nothing like I experienced out there. I had to put a block heater in my engine and it seemed like it never got above 0 for months on end. <br />I did love the people however, and met the love of my life at the time in Minot. It did suck traveling because Bismark was so far away as the next City or if you wanted to at the time head north to Regina Canada. It got to a point where I put in for orders to every remote assignment I could to get out of there but it just never came. I made the best of it and I recommend that although it sucked for me at the time I am sure after 30 years there is a whole lot more there now. I am originally from about 30 miles northeast of base (graduated from Glenburn) and volunteered to come to Minot when I got B-52s out of nav school. So I freely admit there is some bias in my response. That said, there are precious few places I've visited that you can see such awesome sunrises and sunsets, drive 30 minutes in any direction and be able to watch the stars, where most people will bend over backwards to help you out if you need it. If you ever need or want suggestions for things to do or places to visit, just let me know!
