What is your favorite soup or stew?

Fall is approaching with cooler temperatures in the evenings where I live in Northern, Virginia. I enjoy soups and stews of many kinds. When I don't feel well tomato or chicken broth help - really or psychosomatic makes no difference to me :-)
I enjoy cream of potato, a hearty vegetable beef soup, chicken gumbo, and Hungarian goulash.
The only soups I really dislike are those that are deliberately served cold or else are fish or sea food based :-)

I like hot soups and stews. I really enjoyed Spargel Soup [white asparagus soup] when I was stationed in Bavaria. I learned to enjoy Hungarian Goulash Soup with a wiener schnitzel and Pomme Frites and the Wilder Mann in Bamberg, Germany.
Here at home in the USA I enjoy cream of potato, vegetable beef, tomato, and Hungarian Goulash Soup when it is done well.
My favorite soups to eat out are French Onion Soup prepared in the oven of good steak houses and potato soup from Logan's. SGT James Allen

LTC Stephen F. First of all I don't consider it fall here in California (sorry it just doesn't remind me of Colorado or the Midwest with the change in colors etc. My favorite is a hot bowl of homemade vegetable soup with real beef stew steak added and lots of fresh vegetables right from the country market (the fresher the better). Day 2, heat it up with some noodles and pour the soup over the noodles. There is no Day 3, its all gone!

I'm not big on following recipes, but I like soups with more meat, more onions, less potatoes, no tomatoes, other veggies balanced, thicker broth, lots of garlic and many other spices.

Sometimes I'll follow a recipe to make a delicious French onion soup.

I am definitely a thick, hearty stew girl. I agree, I tend to stay away from cold soups and anything fish or seafood based.

LTC Stephen F. - I love them all, except the cold soups. I particularly like a good hearty vegetable beef soup, served with hard, crusty Italian (real) bread or cornbread. I also like tomato soup with crackers (actually Cheeze-It). Corn Chowder, clam chowder, ... and on and on. Also, chili is one of my absolute favorites. I don't like cold weather, but one of the good things about it is that it is a great time to enjoy a bowl (or three) of soup... :-) Damn, this has made me hungry... :-)
