2011 buffalo chicken. So much spicy, something I've never experienced in any other MRE, ever. Plus it came with dreamsicle cookies and other good side items. Wish they'd bring it back

I had two. The old brown bag ham slice and the five fingers of death (basically hot dogs of sorts) you could keep them in your cargo pocket and eat em as you were walking if you had to. All these new ones you pretty much have to stop an heat em up to be able to eat them. Five fingers of death saved me many times in mile ten or so of a foot march when you needed a little more energy.

I'm pretty simple, but I've always liked the 09 - Beef Stew. It was always the easiest for me to get down, and it was well suited for heating up on most heat sources.
The best thing to come along was the MRE Heaters in the 90's - except of course, the propensity for bored Airmen to make MRE Bombs :)

Beef Stew has been an original since 1981, although I wasn't introduced to MREs until 1987. Original contents were:
Beef Stew TS 5 oz
Fruit FD
Cherry Nut Cake
Peanut Butter
Crackers
Cocoa
Spoon
Acc Pkt A
But by the time I was done with MREs in 2010 :
Beef Stew
Garlic mashed potatoes
Peanut butter
Jelly
Crackers
Pound cake
French vanilla cappuccino
Hot sauce
Accessory packet B
Spoon
Flameless ration heater
Hot beverage bag
I always found it to be a special treat to get the peanut butter and jelly with the crackers vs. the jalapeno cheese spread :)

The nice part about the Ham Slice was making an "MRE sammich" with the crackers and cheese spread if you could get it (I think it came with peanut butter, but you could usually trade).

Ham Slice was good, but better if you happened to get MRE Bread as well. Â I used to be in charge of POR's when I was with the Grunts and MRE Bread was highly desired. Â My favorite was the Chicken and Rice and I would eat the Lemon Pound cake for my birthday if I could get my hands on some.

I ended up with a pineapple pound cake once without realizing it. I'm super allergic to pineapple (A-Shock). Scared the shit out of the 1stSgt who was sitting next to me at the time. He's like "Why the f#$% are you blue?" Immediately followed by me twitching on the ground as they found a Corpsman.

Getting the one I liked especially if it was popular took some tactics and trickery. I often had a buddy in the KMT (Kitchen Moble Tent?) who would pull my favorites out for me. Loved the lemon pound cake...that thing was like searching for the lochness monster.

I was in on the first generation of MRE's. I first saw them on Okinawa in 1983. Going from canned C-Rats to MRE's was not a great experience and spelled the end of the John Wayne on the dog tag chain. Yes, they were lighter and easier to carry than canned rations but they were not as good to eat.
The ones that were was most favored (traded for) were the chicken a la king and beef stew. The ones you never, ever wanted were the dehydrated beef or pork pattie since we almost never were able to reconstitute them it was like eating a brick and didn't do much for the digestive system either.

To this day, my all time favorite WAS meal #1 Pork with rice in bbq sauce. This was back in 93-95 or so. That one was awesome hot or cold. I still miss it.

First gen MRE...dehydrated pork was best. Mix in canteen cup w/water and cheese, heat w/tabs. (Brutal if try to eat w/just water.)
Ham slices, too.
