Many of us have one thing that really gets to us. I have to say that probably my biggest pet peeve (as it pertains to the military) are ill fitted ACU tops. I constantly find myself explaining to people how their uniform should fit.

My biggest AR 670-1 peeve is that the uniforms the Army most commonly wears, the ACU's and the ASU's, aren't covered by AR 670-1. The "Uniform regulation" does not cover the most commonly worn uniforms..

<p>The 1st problem is the 670-1 itself, the entire regulation is so full of gray areas that it is constantly leaving many of the rules within up to personal interpretation, look at the thread that many of us have participated in relation to SFC Dees, while she perceives black and white, her CSM perceives his own interpretation of it, which is also an issue of unit CDRs/CSMs/1SGs all creating policy letters that sometimes do take away from the regulation instead of adding too as is allowed. </p><p><br></p><p>This is also in reference to what SSG Woods conveyed in her response as well.</p><p><br></p><p>It is to ambiguous and not cut and dried on many items addressed within.</p>

I guess mine would have to be walking and talking on the cell phone. It seems like everyone on Fort Benning has no better place to talk on the phone than the PX and all those same people lack the ability to pause for a few seconds and handle their business.

I don't wear the dress uniforms often, but that's what irks me. I get peeved about people who don't know what awards they have or in which order they go. Yes, campaign and service awards get given out like candy- but not knowing which ones you are authorized shows you don't pay attention to details or even your surroundings (and often don't care to update your record).

Second, if you can't put them in the right order, it tells me you don't even know the basic concept of how to either reference 670-1 or even conduct a basic Google search.

A great leader of mine once told me that NCOs don't enforce pet peeves so therefore we don't have pet peeves. We enforce standards and discipline. It is my job as an NCO to know and understand AR 670-1, as well as the ALARACT's in place, covering the wear and appearance of the uniform. It is my job to educate my Soldiers on these standards as well as ensure they follow these standards. I love reading regulations. I love educating myself, and 670-1 is one of my favorites.

In my opinion, AR 670-1 is clear cut, black and white with most of the stuff it covers, however some stuff in there is based on the interpretation of who is reading it. Two of the most commonly debatable ones I've seen are sun glasses and hair cuts.

So what I have done is I have outlined my interpretations of it in a class with my subordinates as well as listened to their feedback on their interpretations so we are all on the same page. With that being said, my "pet peeve", if you will, with 670-1 is leaders, and Soldiers in general, not knowing or understanding it whilst trying to make corrections to someone else. In order to enforce the standards you must know the standards.

My biggest problem is with the regulation itself. I have sat on a few boards and listened to other senior NCO's ask about the ACU and soldiers give answers from 670-1 and those soldiers are told they are correct. Like someone posted earlier, the AR does not cover current uniforms. The other problem I have is when higher "brass" talks about the lack of standards and discipline soldiers have today when the regulations that provide these standards are out dated and there is no rush to get them approved.

I read a while back that the main reason 670-1 is not approved now is because of the debate about tattoos. What a joke. A tattoo does not make a bad soldier, some of the best soldiers I have seen and even worked for have had visible tattoos, that does not make them unprofessional.

We need a fix at the higher levels to give us the guidelines which standards can be enforced. Before we talk about standards and the discipline of upholding those standards, Army Leadership needs to update the regulations instead of putting out a BS ALARACT.

For me it's headgear, buttons, and ID tags around the belt loop. There's nothing that bothers me more than seeing an old patrol cap looking cook white, be it squashed down civil war style, rolled ranger style, or cocked back on their head it immediately draws my attention. I see buttons unbuttoned miles away, they draw me closer and with them I see a shiny silver ring of ID tags screaming come correct me. Next to hands in the pocket probably three of the most reoccurring on the spot corrections made.

One more thing that bothers me isn't so much a violation, it's an attitude. There are plenty of officers who don't have the faintest idea how to put together their dress uniform. Some just don't bother to look up the rules, some don't care enough to double check, some are just plain clueless, but to me the worst offenders are those who think the answer is it's "NCO business" or I'll just ask top. Wrong answer. It's one of those things every Soldier needs to know and has in common, and not just because we want to look sharp.

I used to not understand the inclusion of the DA photo in boards. But there is a reason beyond the stated ones- the uniform is one of the very few things all MOSs and ranks have in common. It's a basic standard that can be used across the board to gauge attention to detail (knowing and applying a standard), your attitude towards the Army (caring enough to look up the standard), and your ability to figure things out- I mean we all wear the same uniform, so you can just ASK anyone, literally anyone, if you don't know. If you can't do that, well, it shows up to the rest of us in the form of a visible uniform violation.

I personally don't have any pet peeves.  While I believe there is a time and a place for 670-1 to be strictly enforced I personally don't strictly enforce it at work.  In my work environment many of the 'pet peeves' people tend to have are just not relevant.  Put on a clean uniform and wear it properly.  If you have a hand in your pocket while you're waiting for something is it really interfering with...well...anything?<div><br></div><div>There is a small level of opinion that goes into what appears to be "Professional" and I think many people have an issue admitting that.  Personally, I think that a high & tight haircut is the epitome of an unprofessional haircut and I'll even go so far as to say that it is a 'fad' hairstyle.  Over in the 82nd many people would vehemently disagree with me and insist that it was the exact opposite.  <div><br></div><div>Obviously if you're headed up to battalion or interacting with a senior NCO or an officer SA comes into play and you adjust accordingly.  Know your operational environment.<br><div><div><br></div><div>I actually do have a pet peeve, but it's with the policy letter that prohibits the wear of minimalist shoes.  There are some policies and regulations in place that, I feel, are there simply because someone decided to make them.  The current issue with tattoos will probably be the next one.</div></div></div></div>

Ill-fitting uniforms.  Example:  Too tiny jackets, pants too large, hats squeezing off circulation to the brain, etc. It's all in the first chapter of AR 670-1.  It shows that someone treats buying the clothes they have to wear every single day as something that is not deserving of forethought and giving those people responsibility frightens me.

My goodness, my biggest pet peeve is stinkin make up, fake eyelashes, and french tipped nails. I can't even tell how much that fires me up. There's a time and place for all that crap and it's NOT in uniform. I'm a female, albeit I don't wear any of that mess, but I get females want to have some femininity.

HOWEVER, looking like someone smashed your face into a make up pallet and glued fake crap to your face is not professional. It's stated CLEARLY what is allowed and what is not. I'm just glad the army is getting rid of braids and big buns. Braids and big buns are way to bulky to wear a cap correctly unless they buy one a few sizes up and almost next to impossible to wear an ACH correctly.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen females mess up at the range because they're helmet is pushed up by the bun and over their eyes, smashing their eyepro into their faces.

I think currently my biggest pet peeve is the incorrect placement and order of badges on ACUs. This mainly applies to individuals who have 3, 4, or 5 badges. Mainly people usually do this to accentuate certain badges (CIB), but there's still supposed to be an order to it!

There is an ALARACT regarding the proper organization of these badges.

Some of my BIGGEST peeves are as follows:

1) Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals with no campaign stars.

2) Ribbons out of sequence.

3) Green "leader tabs" on the shoulders of the ASU's.

4) People not knowing that, if you have a group 1 (CIB/CAB, etc...) badge on your dress uniform, your Airborne or air assault wings MUST be worn below the ribbons.

5) Armed Forces Reserve Medal being worn with no device.

6) CIB's AND CAB's being worn together...

7) More than three devices on a Marksmanship badge.

8) Drivers badges and marksmanship badges being worn in the wrong order.

9) People not using shirt-stays! (Ok, it's not a requirement, but dammit people, you look like ass without them!

10) People putting a star on their National Defense medal for getting out, and then reenlisting.

11) People confusing the medals, and the criteria for the two different GWOT medals.

12) Seeing stetsons and spurs in unauthorized areas

13) Gig lines

14) People not understanding the "knot/hitch" system on the Good Conduct Medal

I'm sure I can think of more, but RP isn't paying me by the sentence =) I'll probably update it as I think of more.. Which I inevitably will!

Didn't see it listed yet...but Boots. People come in with boots beat to hell, falling apart, black as night from dirt or scuff marks. If its an FTX/STX it's ok but when we are in garrison for the last 3 weeks you have had plenty of time to clean them up.

What I truly hate the most in violations of AR 670-1 is cocky senior NCOs and Officers that walk around with their hands in their pocket. Here on Wainwright, I've mentioned to many officers they are setting a bad example and that its a violation as well as NCOs that do it. Sometimes they respect the correction as I always use tact. Other times they'll just look at at me and say, "I do what my rank can handle".....Really?

My pet peeve would be that when you can see the green socks above the boot. I understand that Soldiers don't like to tuck the pant leg in the boot, then just blouse them below the top of the boot but no lower then the third eyelet

That is one I see often as well as driving with a cell phone. The pet peeve is that Soldiers (of all ranks) decide not to follow AR 670-1 (or other regs, standards) when they are away from their unit.

Then Headgear is my #2 (ACU Foilage cap in lieu of the Patrol cap, when it's 45 degrees, and no installation/policy letter authorizing it, and incorrect wear (Beret especially).

I think it's interesting and unfair that so many NCOs told SFC Dees she needs to let it go with her CoC regarding her two hair buns regardless if she is within regulation. Well to start my response off (and throw rocks at the Bee's Nest) AR 670-1 does not cover the walking and talking on a cell phone, walking while smoking, walking while eating, walking while drinking. Those are more commonly known as Blue Book Standards that are added by the Post or Unit.

I.E. USAG Grafenwoehr/Rose Barracks the post policy letter concerning uniform items does not address the above mentioned...it is completely within regulation to walk and smoke, walk and talk on a cell phone, etc... because there is no policy in place.

This is why everyone was confused at the proposed additions to AR 670-1 that was going to add those things. Part of enforcing standards is making sure you know what the standards are, not just a monkey see/monkey do mentality.

I have a huge pet peeve for the way headgear is worn (any of the headgears), tilted back, ranger rolled, smashed, worn like a Marine (I kid you not, I had a soldier iron/starch out his PC because he saw that the Marines did it). The headgear is one of the most noticeable parts of your uniform.

I tell you that the one that bothers me the most is when Soldiers wear the soft cap like a baseball; tucked in all the way down to their ears. Or when they do all the weird crap to it to make it look cool. It is a uniform for a reason, making look the way they want instead of following the rules tells me that a Soldier lacks discipline, respect for his/her leaders and the organization.

My PET PEEVE is the lack of enforcement of proper wear & appearance of the uniform itself. For issues I can make an on the spot correction for it doesn't bother me. I correct it and move on; however, having tight uniform, or ACU Top that is so high I see your front pockets and worse your back pockets..... DRIVES me crazy. I have spent more time educating people on the proper fit of their uniform than I see violations of grooming standards or other things.

I think each post should have "uniform police" like curtosey patrol. Issuing 72 hour time frame tickets for getting uniforms that fit. Because it sure is like a collateral duty to me.

I am in an aviation unit with a lot of Pilots and officers and its not the proper wear of it that gets me its the total disregard for an on the spot correction of an officer. They will look at you like you are crazy for saying that you arent supposed to have your hands in your pockets or the proper way to blouse the A2CU trousers. They get overly defensive like you were way out of line for stating the regualation.

I also get quite peeved about haircuts. As someone with longer hair, I frequently have other NCOs tell me that I need to get a high and tight, or that my hair can only be 2 inches long, etc. As long as a Soldier's hair is off the ears and neck, is neatly tapered, looks professional, and does not interfere with the proper wear of headgear, it meets AR670-1. Furthermore - as a junior NCO - you ARE obligated to make on the spot corrections, regardless of who is making them. I'd rather be corrected by a subordinate for making a uniform mistake (though it would be a bit embarassing) then allowed to walk around all day wearing something incorrectly. It's the standard for everyone.

Potentially a divergent point of view on this topic. First is a question, who teaches the new officers about AR 670-1. At least when I went to OBC/BOLC or whatever it is called now, we had about 4-5 hrs on D&C and nothing on uniforms. I was fortunate b/c 2 of my brothers have been in the Army for years and set me up before I officially signed in at my first duty station. However I believe part of the problem is the "I think this applies (but don't have actual evidence) and you will listen to me b/c I'm your cadre or in your CoC". An example is the black fleece. I was told it was authorized at my duty station. I was TDY at a different Ft and told it wasn't authorized due to AR 670-1 by cadre. I asked the commander when it changed b/c I hadn't heard of this. He responded that the person who I heard it from was told by their CSM at their previous duty station that he didn't want soldiers wearing the black fleece. Thus it became "law of the land" in this cadre's eyes. This is just a small example of how confusing it can be for a brand new officer. I'm not saying it relieves the personal responsiblity to know the AR's but when one is told to listen to cadre b/c your just a "newbie" or "dumb butter bar" you end up with officers who start out with bad info and it just goes downhill from there. Granted I was in medical so it's a whole different ball game.

Regarding the military? I'd saying it's a jacked up uniform. I've seen name tapes reversed, flags upside down, patches and other velcro items not placed on correctly (crooked), heavily worn velcro items especially the flag. Show some pride in the uniform.

I don't know if its the need for attention, but it drives me nuts if you are telling someone a story and someone else jumps in and has to tell us something they did that was way better then what you just did.

Unfortunately, I am guilty of this one. I am between sizes. The large is too tight, and the XL is too loose. The regular size sleeves are too short, and the long size sleeves are too long. What is an oddly shaped guy to do outside of having each uniform custom tailored?

I see a lot of uniform BUZZ here and frankly that is okay, however my pet peeve has to do with "KNOWN violation of any standard" and basically throwing it in the face of others just daring a OTSC. I am an aviator, so let me say that brow beating my fellow branch folk is not in my best interest, it must be said they love to do this daily. I am not a CSM who most state has nothing better to do then give critiques on the wear of the uniform and conduct, but I have been accused when making corrections just because of my rank and becoming "one of them".

There are clear violations and the smallest only means to me that you are willingly able to make a choice that is not yours to make and the consequences only get more detrimental when considering aviation. To list a few, mustaches, sideburns and hair clearly out of regulation, A2CU un-bloused when not flying or bloused way below the second eyelet of the boot, not reporting to formation at all or on time when it applies to everyone, etc.

I think everyone has more than one pet peeve and think they could list more. What I find totally true about Rally Point is that most folks here CARE about their service and reputation. It is evident in the responses and care given to subjects here trying to gain a more professional perspective and opinion on things.

I frankly enjoy the cross service environment myself and so therefor I stick with knowingly violating standards. Those folks know who they are already and most likely they are not reading this anyway.

The fact the Navy has BDUs or camouflage uniforms (whatever they're called). A majority of sailors are aboard ship, why do you need to be camouflaged on a ship (especially a gray and black ship)? The rest are on shore duty with BLUE camouflage...??!! I thankfully retired just before they were issued. Plus, I was told, the first issue could melt and stick to your skin while fighting a fire!

One of my biggest pet peeves has been and always will be when an employer does not have courtesy enough to follow up when you take the time to send a resume. I mean how hard is it to at least send an email saying no thank you. I was an employer and I always managed to do it and sometimes we had several hundred applications. That and people who do not have the courtesy to show up on time.

I just thought of another pet peeve that has really grinded my gears: Individuals not taking the time to read other peoples responses on RallyPoint. It really irritates me when the same thing is said again because people want to throw their two cents in when its already been stated and discussed.

I understand some of the bigger posts have hundreds of responses and everyone wants to be heard, but I really hate reading the same thing twice when its already been said.

I have a hard time listening to some people I work with who condemn others for making inadvertent mistakes without feedback. Sometimes this is done just for the sake of making conversation or fitting in. Even worse is dishonest feedback. I hate hearing negative things about myself as much as the next guy, but I know I need it if I'm going to get anywhere. Please don't set your people up for failure by telling them their s*** doesn't stink when they clearly have room for improvement.

and the worse, the salute fest...when a group of officers encountered another group and rendered about 10 unnecessary salutes because they were ignorant on the regs.

These days, it's bad grammar.
Especially in emails.

People can't tell there ass from a whole in the ground when it comes to grammar, and send that crappola out on professional-ish email.
Neither management nor rank-and-file should except the bad affects of poor grammar.
Irregardless of how common-place it has become.
Their going to either have to learn to communicate properly in the english language or there going to appear, for all intensive purposes, as idiots.

I would have a few that I would have to put down:

1. Punctuality. As a troop-Learn how to friggin' read a watch. I do understand, even though it irks me, that when I am on the "time" of my supervisors-they are on time when they get there, I am there on time-at the appointed time. Sometimes it is out of their control, sometimes they forget, sometimes the attitude is "they can wait". If it is feasible, the polite thing to do is make a notification of ETA, so that for example, someone could get a cup of joe. Just saying.

2. The E1/3 and the O1 (not prior E) know it all. As a young troop, try and silence (I would say shut, but not trying to offend anyone) your mouth and open your mind-you went to high school or college, fantastic, now we are in U-pick-a-stan doing real world work, pay attention. You really do not know it all. You know the bare minimum from whatever basic training and follow-on schooling you have attended. {Caveat to this is that there are some young troops and some 2ndLts who have real honest to God life experience that is relevant}. But for the most part, if you will pay attention to the NCOs and really learn the job from the ground up as a troop, and as a young officer, if you will pay attention to the senior Os, and to the SNCOs, your career will flourish. We are on the same team, if I teach you to be a better Officer, or a better troop, then OUR entire military benefits. BOOM.

3. Uniform. Unless in the field, you should take every effort to wear the uniform as if you are representing perfection. You are. Our brothers and sisters paid for that uniform with their blood. Honor that, you represent them and their sacrifice.

4. Be honest/have integrity. If you screw up, own it. Shocker-not the first person to make a mistake. Learn and move on.

I suppose if I had a pet peeve it would be "cherry pickers". What I mean by that is those that pick and choose what policies to enforce, or abide by, and ignore the ones that don't fit in their little universe. Conversely this also applies to those that choose only to enforce or abide by said policies only when it suits them.

Another would be those that look for fault where there is no fault. Just my $0.02. Happy 4th of July !

A bad presentation is mine. Power Point is not the instructor, you are. I have seen so many soldiers simple just read off the power point. If they wanted us to simply read it they would have put it in an SSD. If they want someone to lecture about the said topic they put a person in place to do that. At one point when I was a SGT I stopped a 1SG in the middle of class and asked him if I could teach the class instead. I felt it was a disservice to those in attendance and he shouldn't be up there if he didn't know what he was doing. He let me take over and those in attendance took away much more than they would have with the 1SG. The 1SG pretty much hated me after that but it wouldn't have happened if he was prepared as he should have been.

My Biggest Pet Peeve is not so much military, as it is human nature. We live in Houston, where gridlock was not so much invented as perfected. Five million people meeting on the highways twice a day... you get the general idea. So, there we are, sailing along, when some yahoo jerks their wheel and jumps three lanes of traffic, ending up in front of you, without using a dang blinker!
Directionals people!!! Find them and use them!
Yes, I am sitting here muttering bad words as I recall the last drive I took on Interstate 10, driving a 37 ft RV, when a Mini Cooper jumped in front of me and hit their brakes. Yeah, I have mine configured wearer's right to left : parachutist badge, driver's badge, marksmanship badge. For me it is the lack of useful information that is presented at the TAP classes. Don't get me wrong there are some good things that is put out but there are so much more that can be taught. Some steps that can be taken to fix this are:
1 - there needs to be two parts to the TAP process, 1 military given at the unit to explain in-depth what your benefits are and 2 one where you are going to reside
2 - have personnel go through TAP where they plane to get out
3 - get information that pertains to the general local
4 - make this process one that you should be attending through out your career

Some O in another part of the country has to set an arbitrary date for sleeves up or down as if personal comfort should not be in the equation. Same rocket scientist that determines when the heat and air come on in a building regardless of the outside temp. How smart do we look when we are inside with sleeves down with the heat on or sleeves up and an ambient temp that of Carslbad Caverns? Other than that...every meal a feast, every day a holiday.

My biggest peeve is the waste of resources changing perfectly usable uniform items so some General can leave a legacy. I have seen the replacement of the "Block Hat" for the baseball cap, because Fidel Castro was using the block hat, so it became the Fidel Castro hat. The fatigues were standardized and then replaced with standardized woodland Camo. Then all the services got into a pissing match and developed their own camo uniforms. My biggest uniform peeve was the general who stole the ranger beret and made it the class A and Class D uniform cap for the the entire U.S. Army!

1SG Private RallyPoint Member I agree completely, and would also add to that: all ill-fitting uniforms. I worked in men's clothing for six years before enlisting in the Navy and one of the things that is absolutely true is that the ill-fit of clothes is often what make them look bad; read an article in GQ or Esquire and time and again, the simplest and most consistent advice regarding fashion is to have your clothes properly fitted. (Obviously, the fashion trend of ultra-tight fits for men is a bridge too far, but the point about proper fit still stands.)

A lot of Sailors are simply wearing the wrong size in their NWUs and NSUs, and often the complaint that I hear is, "I like to be comfortable." That is ridiculous: Properly fitted clothes are comfortable and tend to last longer because high-traffic seams are not stressed more than they need to be due to the poor fit.

My latest: you're driving on a one lane road and the driver of the oncoming vehicle is way over the center line and lead-footing it. Not knowing if the driver is going to move, you steer your car so far over to the right, you're off the pavement and the butthead waits till the last second to swerve on to their side of the road. This is especially annoying on a curving road with a lot of trees. My neighborhood and town is like this and I encounter these types of drivers daily. How I wish my second car was an up-armored HMMWV so I could "right back at ya" to these Alpha Hotels :-)

I really have a tie for my top pet peeve recently and they both deal with taskers:

- Someone higher up the chain sitting on a tasker or not sending the tasker to the appropriate person to answer it until 1 day before it is due (or the day it is due) even though they've had it for WEEKS and getting pissed off when everything else isn't dropped right away to answer the tasker immediately.

- Answering the same question over and over . . . and OVER again in the form of repetitive taskers, BUT in a different format each time I have to answer so copy/paste isn't useful or worth the effort.

I get pretty upset when I correct a soldier i.e a uniform deficiency and they correct it on the spot, then see them 20 minutes later with the exact same deficiency.

Its okay in the end though, they end up improving their writing skills and I get to read a paper on AR 670-1

NCOER's. I feel like unless you're bending over backwards, doing flips, and yelling "look at me!!!! look at me!!!", you don't really get the attention of your supervisors. No one notices the guy who comes to work everyday on time and gets his stuff done in a timely manner. You can be very proficient at your job and for the Army, that's not enough. That's the standard. If you're not doing 10 extra things that your peers are not doing, then you are just standard.
Then everyone else does 10 extra things just to try and keep up. Now there's the new standard. Now you have to do 20 extra things to make yourself stand out.

Which is great for the Army because standards are being raised but in a small field, its very difficult to get ahead. In my unit, there are 35 NCO's and 3 SPC. My last unit, only half were NCO's. It's just so happens that it's very lopsided here and NCO's are fighting for positions of leadership. You can't rate everyone among the best.

The Bad: How do you stand out when everyone is an A+ student in the class?
The Good: It's nice to work with competent people.

Oh God, where to start. How about with this crap that grunts are getting busted up M16's that probably saw action back in OIF I, but admin Marines are rolling out to the range with brand new M4's and optics that actually function. For the life of me I can't figure out why the Corps would not give grunts first priority for the newer, better weapons.

The cutting score system is another problem, especially for grunts. Someone explain how a boot who's been in for less total time than I've spent in the field rates Corporal in half the time it took me to pick up.

Black chevrons on woodland camo. I'm sorry, but if you're E-8 or E-9, you're probably just gonna get a "Good morning, sir" from me (which is permissible when you do not know the Marine's rank).

Of my pet peeves, the biggest would have to be the assumptions that civilians have about the military. Because I'm a veteran, of course I *have* to be a programmed killer that can snap at any time. Or I *have* to be a drill sergeant type that will make people cringe for looking at me wrong.

I am neither. Yes, I have my moments that I'm less inclined to put up with people's crap, but those are few and far between.

My biggest gripe about the Army is the failure to establish a REALISTIC weight measurement. I served with a man who in his civilian life was a mill-wright, his biceps were larger than my thighs. There was not an ounce of fat on this individual, but he was always classified as "overweight" and though never classified as "obese" he was always subject to additional "screenings. He always passed his AFPT with high scores. But the class "overweight" haunted him as long as I knew him.

Secondly there was never a time in my experience with the military, that anyone came out with a comprehensive physical training program. I saw many PT programs come and go yet most did not prepare the solder for the activities in the field much less combat. Most were undergoing change for the sake of change.

So I wish I could be on Rally Point more...but as I sit here and try to access RP from my work computer...another pet peeve comes to mind:

Marine Corps computers (cant speak for the other services seeing as I cant use their computers) are outdated with everything from software to hardware. Shoot we are still using IE7(Why we are using IE at all still blows my mind) but this limits what we can do as far as sites that require the most updated html rules ect. Sure most sites try to accommodate older browsers, but they often run slow....take for instances this post..it just took me almost 15 mintues to write this.

Also the fact that MC blocks sites that would aide me in doing my job is really irritating, sure I can request them to unblock it for use...but that takes weeks to approve.

Okay that is all for now. I do not plan on revising this until I get home so any spelling or grammatical mistakes Ill hit up later.

People who use poor grammar, misspell wrds ;), and don't communicate properly. I lose respect for people who send me emails with nothing but errors in them. I find it difficult to focus on their message when I have such a hard time reading it. It gives me the often false perception that I am dealing with an idiot when I am really just dealing with someone who was in a rush or who is lazy. Regardless, it bugs me. I am also annoyed by people who use words that don't exist or make sense... such as irregardless.

Command Maintenance Management Inspection while deployed into the VN Bush. Any inspection conducted while away from the FOB or Base Camp. It requires the Commander and 1st Sgt. be picked up by helicopter and taken to the site of the inspection while the Company twiddles their collective thumbs. One of the CMMI teams hit a mine and blew the wheels of their 3/4 ton truck. It didn't injure anyone but the Company Command structure gave them a standing ovation. LOL!

My biggest "irk" is all of them but, what I cannot stand worse than anything else are the Soldiers/NCOs/Officers that know the exact requirement and barely meet it on purpose. Now, they meet the standard but, those sideburns are a pubic hair close to unauthorized, the trousers are a millimeter from the third eyelet, the hair is just off the collar and ear, the mustache is within all the "lines" but sticks out three inches, etc.

That is what drives me batshit crazy! Of course, I am institutionalized and mentally unstable anyway lol.

It's true this this may be a service specific conversation. As far as the hands in pockets thing, the there are more people with a stronger conviction about that than the actual Navy uniform regulations do. In other words, it causes confusion because it leaves too much open to interpretation. Of course the right thing would be just to not put your hands in your pockets; but then you have a lot of senior leadership walking around with their hands in their trouser pockets. If you try to correct them because you interpret it as being wrong, they will tell you to show them. If you show them what the uniform regulation says, it doesn't clearly state that you shall not have your hands in your pockets; but it does say that it detracts from military smartness. So basically it may look to some as saying that we don't like it because it looks bad; but we're not going to stop you from doing it. At this point, it has become a battle just not worth fighting anymore. I personally think it looks better if your hands are in your coat pockets and not in pants pockets. Imagine the image of the lone Sailor with this hands in his coat pockets, that does not look unprofessional at all IMO.

The officers and senior enlisted that allow Soldiers to fall into formation in a multitude of different uniforms. One person with gloves, one with a field jacket, one wearing a fleece cap. It's the "come as you are" Army.

I guess mine would be proper wearing of a cover. It's not a baseball cap. It doesn't cock back on your head. It doesn't go down around your ears so that the top of the cover is rounded with the head. Supposed to be parallel with the ground. 2 inches off the brim of the nose. I was taught to place you pointing and middle finger off your nose and place the bill on the fingers. As far as the ranger roll. I don't like a full roll. And I don't like a blocked Cover either. I normally just roll the front as to show the rank. I know that rolling in any form is against the reg. but so is pulling the front forward like civil war hats. Can't see the rank. That drives me crazy!

Pockets - if they educated a reason of why they shouldn't have hands in pockets and not because "Army" said so maybe I'd buy into it. It took almost 11 years for someone to tell me a good reason why not to have hands in pockets - and it wasn't "oh looks so unprofessional" (our ACUs look like a bag of smashed ass to begin with).... it was because of how long it takes someone to pull them out if person became hostile. It was to get people out of the habit of being relaxed/unguarded and into a posture of self defense.

Looking professional and being professional are two different things. Some people forget the later.

My biggest pet peeve of all concerning the uniform, be it the BDUs/DCUs/ACUs, was anyone rolling their soft cap/patrol cap in any fashion..there never was nor should ever have been a so called "Ranger Roll". Most of the time I witnessed this it was being worn by a commissioned officer and I would get a severe stink-eye cast my way when I would tactfully inform them that their headgear was 8-up. A close second would have to be the headgear that has never seen a washing machine and looks like it has been used to conduct multiple oil changes on my old M60A3 MBT. Wash it, shake it out and let it air dry so it doesn't look like it needs to be deposited in the oily rags bin in the motor pool!!

My biggest irk is when I can see the green socks in the gap between the pants and the boots. I always tuck my pants in the boots but there are soldiers that their pants are at their calves, 2-3 inches above the boots. SSG Christopher Adame this picture drives me mad.

Not a peeve, but a funny experience. I was walking with some senior NCOs an an officer came by. One NCO did not salute. The officer stopped and
asked "Sgt don't you salute officers?"

The NCO replied "Yes if they know what they are."

Seems the LTC had put on a 1LTs cap as he left the building.

Mine is actually not based on the end user. It's the process that our folks in the Puzzle Palace use to decide new uniforms.

I can't think of a single successful, well thought out uniform change from the time I came in to now. The changes have been legion, and they've all been flops. Many have come close, but no cigars...

Recently my biggest pet peeve has become the wear of AR670-1 unauthorized boots. Since the most recent update to the AR last year, most synthetic leather boots are no longer authorized. So every time I see a leader walk up with GEN-I Nike boots on it blows my mind. They were great boots. I owned them, but they aren't authorized anymore. As leaders our soldiers look to us to follow our example. If we are out of regs the soldiers will be too.

What "irks" me the most..... I can't truly pinpoint one specific AR 670-1 violation, I see a bazillion of them a day at Ft Bragg. So I would have to say hearing, "I'm not on post, why do I have to adhere to 670-1?" Or the NCO at the gas station "JUST RUNNING IN" setting a NEW standard, cause he was too lazy to put his headgear on his head.

Ok, thought of something else. The proper wear of GEN III gear. The fleece jacket in inclement weather is not an outer jacket. The adaptation of the USARAK "Blue Book" on wearing of Gen III should be Army wide. They are the subject matter experts.

I have to say I am irked by this very same thing as everyone else. I am currently in charge of about 45+ officers on a regular basis and there are likely about 20 who love to put their hands in their pockets all the time. But that number has been decreasing pretty rapidly with my "I'm watching you eyeballin" and bringing it up.

Lets add threads that need to be trimmed, dirty name tapes, patches, dirty flag, laces wrapped AROUND the boot or hanging out like a python. And the most douchebagginest ( that's my word) looking thing is that damned fleece cap in ACU's outside one's battalion footprint.

I always ensure I have a pair of gloves with me when it's cold even if I'm minus my soft shell top.

My biggest uniform pet peeve? NCOs that believe a uniform "violation" is the end all and complete indicator of discipline.

See the uniform worn incorrectly, by all means make the correction professionally and move on.
If you think that is your sole purpose as an NCO, or thats it's anything more than a minor thing that should take mere seconds of your available time in a day Id say, you are not on the right track.
I can say without a doubt, having ones hands in pockets does not lead to failure to clean ones weapon, properly clear a side room as part of BD#6a, make you forget to stay clear of the gun in a M2A3 during turret operations, of any of a million other things Soldiers do to standard every day, even though while standing in the motor pool on a cold Friday evening waiting on last formation and a hand slips into a pocket..
See it, make the correction and move on.

SSG Christopher Adame, I was taught early in my career that the only time you could have a hand in your pocket was when instructing a class. Then it was only one hand and just to the top knuckle. That being said my biggest pet peeve was/is a clean uniform at the beginning of the day no matter what your job title.

Not wearing your cover when "running" into a building when you think you are close enough or won't get caught.

I can't count the number of times I've corrected people for this while in the Air Force.

Also, while not a uniform violation, on a similar path - running to the building or your car to beat Retreat or TAPS. I've yelled at a few people for that as well (including civilians).

Buttons that are not done up. Whether it is in a shirt, cargo pockets, pants pockets. An empty button hole looks awful. It draws the eye. Also, a buttoned up shirt pocket with something in it that changes the lay of the shirt. You might as well have the damn thing unbuttoned or your pen tucked behind your ear. Seeing that pocket bulge pisses me off more than it should.

1. Hands in pockets when wearing dress uniforms is definitely a sign of lack of discipline.

Note: If it's cold out and you need the dexterity, common sense tells you to warm up your hands and I can tolerate sticking your hands in your pockets, in your crotch, or under your armpits for that but be discreet. Don't stand around like the guys in the pic uploaded by SFC James Sczymanski. Put some gloves on.

2. Chewing gum in uniform. My XO (a LtCol) was interviewed as part of a documentary that was put together for a unit I was in, and he was caught chewing gum in uniform while being interviewed. The higher ups who saw the documentary were not amused. I got out before I could find out what happened to my XO, but I'm pretty sure he reached his terminal rank and that that incident helped seal the deal.

3. Wearing sunglasses in formation. When operational necessity dictates their use, we can make allowance for that. I see a lot of Army guys and a few Marines posting pics of themselves trying to look all studly and standing holding guns with their shades on. Whatever trips your trigger, but more often than not, it looks unprofessional... just like Gen MacArthur staging his own landing in the Philippines. Get over yourself and don't try to be too cool for school. Really cool people don't have to try and look the part. They simply are, and don't need props to help them. They don't require big cigars, cigarettes dangling from the lip, a big dip, gun in hand with bands of ammo slung over their shoulder, sunglasses, bandannas, etc. Not saying don't take pics with you and your buddies doing your jobs. Just check your attitude and don't let people see you channeling your inner narcisist.

In other words, "Don't be a poser!"

While not a uniform thing, there is one thing that greatly gets under my skin. When people run inside when the music starts playing, or continues driving during the music. One of the ones that I am not a fan of is when people wear their caps like they are part of a hip-hop gang, where it is slanted to the side or back. another one is the uniform on top and bottom not matching. I admit that I fall under this sometimes since I stuff the uniform in the bag and don't see it until it is too late!

Utility uniforms out in town. Unless you're on some kind of detail get your civvies on or if you must wear a uniform to impress some chick at the bar, rock your dress uniforms, they're better looking than your cammies in the first place. I get that part of that is a regulation difference with some of our sister services but fuck me running with a chainsaw does it put me up the wall.

I was a State Honor Guard for two years, so I notice every tiny flaw or mistake on a uniform. It's a blessing and a curse.

One of my biggest pet peeves is Soldiers walking around with a jacket zipped halfway up. It looks terrible and is usually just laziness on the Soldier's part. Another pet peeve of mine is Soldiers wearing unauthorized "cool guy" gear. We had a Platoon in the Battalion I deployed with that liked to wear shemaghs, cuff their sleeves, walk around without head gear, and sport coyote tan web gear. You'd think they were SF the way they behaved. Their behavior to me indicates an utter failure of their leadership to enforce standards.

When you go to the cold weather leaders course they tell you to put your hands in your pocket. Because it's cold. But other than that I don't like to see hands in the pocket.

Lets add some more. How about when one is wearing a fleece top and their ACU top is longer than their fleece top? That's usually some soldier pushing the limits of AR 600-9 and looking like a damned Tele-Tubby. Or when you see pens/pencils poking out on the sleeve. Tips of the collar curled up. Tips of the cargo pocket flaps curled up. Or when the neck of one's t-shirt has migrated down inside their ACU top.

I guess I just have a lot of uniform pet peeves.

My biggest pet peeve was senior leadership (E-7 & up) not knowing uniform regs, or thinking they know uniform regs that are nothing more than an urban legend. I was in the Navy so I'm not sure about the other branches but here goes with a few examples.

Navy uniform regs Urban Legend #1: Men cannot shave their heads unless they are 25% or more bald. WRONG. Shaved heads are completely authorized as they fit the Navy definition of a regulation haircut and I DARE you, in fact I will bet my entire year's pay, to show me where in the regs it says this. You won't find it because it's NOT THERE.

Navy uniform regs Urban Legend #2: If you ride a motorcycle you must remove all PPE and be in a proper uniform as soon as you dismount your motorcycle. WRONG. PPE may be worn from your motorcycle/parking lot to your immediate work space.

#2 got so bad when I was on the USS Nimitz that our Command Master Chief had to put out to the Chief's Mess what the real instruction was. Chiefs didn't care and were still zealously enforcing their own regulations. It got to the point where I started carrying a copy of the email the Master Chief sent out as well as a copy of the uniform regulations stating that the Chiefs were wrong. Chiefs on the Nimitz hated being proved wrong and were Mafia-like in their retaliation. I almost got out of the Navy because of piss-poor enlisted leadership at that command, with the exception of the Master Chief.

My other pet peeve is senior leadership who can't/won't wear their uniform in accordance with uniform regs and then have the nerve to try and correct junior Sailors for perceived uniform infractions.

This is definitely branch specific, it irritates me seeing the obviously starched and pressed ABU sleeves when AFI36-2903 says "Do not starch or hot press the ABU. Light ironing and center creasing of enlisted chevrons is authorized". The worst part is that the biggest offenders are sernior NCOs. I'm sorry it is not lightly ironed if there is still a defined crease down the length of your sleeve at the end of the day.

When a subordinate makes a uniform correction on a higher ranking individual, and violates numerous regulations in doing so (ie, when an enlisted Soldier makes a correction on an NCO, but doesn't stand at parade rest in doing so; when an enlisted Soldier or NCO makes a correction on an officer, but doesn't salute when approaching or stand at attention while doing so).

When uniforms have design components that the Army seems psychotically opposed to allowing us to use (hoods on jackets, pockets in trousers, ear flaps on winter patrol caps, etc, etc). If the Army didn't want us to use such design components, the Army should not have procured items that include these design components.

When Servicemembers assume that a fellow Servicemember is intentionally flouting or ignoring or not adhering to regulations, instead of having a professional conversation to ascertain if there is a legitimate, authorized reason for the issue noticed....why must we assume that Servicemembers are doing the wrong thing, why can't we assume that Servicemembers are doing the right thing? Shaving profiles, for example; I routinely have a shaving profile, and throughout my career, it seems that most Soldiers, NCOs, and officers just cannot resist assuming that I'm all jacked up because I haven't shaved for a day or a week or a month or whatever, and feel that it is their duty to inform me that I must be clean shaven when on duty (really, no shit, we're supposed to shave while on duty?). Clearly, if I'm in a full, trimmed beard or haven't shaved in a week or so, and in uniform, its authorized--what compels someone to make the assumption that I'm all jacked up, and why do they get so mad when I tell them, professionally, that it is none of their business (we do have a law, HIPAA, http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/, protecting such information, after all)?

When former Infantry officers or Soldiers refuse to remove the button from their ASU from which their Infantry blue cord used to hang.

When those who have been in the military for a long time refuse to buy new uniforms, and continue to wear uniforms that don't fit because the Servicemember has gained substantial weight.

When Servicemembers make uniform corrections based not on regulations or legitimately established command policy but on their personal preference or the established personal preference of someone other than the unit commander. IE, when Servicemembers make uniform corrections based on standards they make up on their own or based on what they think the actual standard really is.

When we're issued uniform items, required to deploy with them and carry them around, but we're not allowed to wear or use them (things like the black parka in Iraq circa 2004-2005, for example).

Mine is one I mainly only see with junior tier enlisted (E-1 to E-4) and it is proper wear of head gear or lack there of, mainly around the dorms. I understand you might be getting off a long day of work but walking around the dorms with your had pushed back redneck style or without one completely is uncalled for. Also going outside to the smoke pit with your blouse unbuttoned or your pants unbloused just makes you look like a lazy dirtbag and the kind of person that I personally can't stand.

The only other one I can think of is please, you left the hood life behind when you joined, do not under any circumstances walk around in your camo or PT gear with your damned pants on the floor. If you miss that life that much then please leave. I am not perfect but many of these are done in blatant disregard of the regs.

SSG Christopher Adame, it's really hard for me to say. I served as a tactical officer at OCS for three years and as a detailed inspector general for four years. I could quote AR670-1 "ad nauseam" and could see uniform discrepancies from a great distance, much to the dismay of officer candidates! Any uniform transgression bothered me, but if I have to select one, I'll say "hands in pockets". While attending OCS, we sewed our pockets shut and to this day, I still don't put my hands in my pockets and generally try to keep them empty! Old habits die hard!

Take the NWU cover, which is the 8 point cover like what the Marines wear. I can't tell you how many sailors I've seen with that cover pulled down near their ears so it fits like a ball cap. Sorry, but that's not how that cover is meant to be worn. And the white hat.... This isn't WW II, so cocking it to the side or wearing it on the back of your stupid head is just plain wrong.

The improper wearing of head gear makes me want to smack it off their head in Jethro Gibbs style, just as wearing a ball cap with the bill off to one side does.

But to get a little off topic (even though it is related)...

Now a thread inside of a thread for the best uniform mistakes.

My best story comes from two friends who were coming back from lunch one day.

They said they were walking back to the command from the galley when they came across this young sailor (an E-3, if memory serves) with an impressive rack of ribbons on his chest. They stopped said sailor to discuss the ribbons he had. This kid had the usual National Defense and Overseas Service Ribbon (this was at Naval Station Yokosuka, Japan in the early 90s). But he also had some rather questionable ones like the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal (could happen, but most likely not at that time), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the best..... The Medal of Honor!

So my friends asked this kid where he got such an impressive rack. His answer (you're not going to believe this)....

The Uniform Shop on base.

They asked him if he knew that he had to earn all those ribbons he had on his uniform. They said that kid actually told them he didn't know that he had to earn them!

Yes... I know some Company Commander (aka Drill Instructor) felt a tremor in the Force and instantly flew off the handle over that answer.

But then I also had a kid report to his first training command in his dress blues wearing a garrison cap. When I asked him why he was wearing that and not his white hat, he said that his Company Commander told him he could. I wanted to send that kid back to boot camp to do it all over again!

I have been out for a while, but I had an issue with headgear. It seemed like I had more styles of hats than anything else. For one I was a Bradley Scout so I had a CVC, also a Kevlar, soft cap, and beret. Now I think the beret issues is something of the part, but when it first came about we were wearing that hot rag in the middle of summer while working in the motor pool or even field training. So What I did was use my CVC bag to try to carry my CVC helmet and my 2 soft caps and beret while I wore my Kevlar. For some reason no matter where I was if I had on the Kevlar people would not ask why. SO I got used to it and wore it everywhere it seemed for a while. So my biggest confusion was what hat, where and for how long. Seemed like we took a lot of time with hats.

My biggest pet peeve is being corrected for hands in the pocket. It's only happened once, but I find this enforcement of the rule the most annoying. I see higher ups do it all the time, but when a Joe does it, it's the end of the world.
I came in as a smart, older man. If your hands are cold, fix it! You have pockets! Use them! There is no reason to have cold hands if you can help it.
Common sense should be the rule, then the rules. Not the other way around.

according to the label on the inside of the garment - it is a 'coat, acu", how many people call them shirts, blouses, jackets etc. etc. and at the same time scream about 'army standards', the army standard is what the army calls the garment, not what you want to call it.

people telling you that you're not authorized to keep stuff in your pockets - the 1st para. of ar 670-1 says that the uniform is supposed to be worn as it's designed, if you look in a dictionary the purpose of pockets is to hold stuff, therefore if your pockets are empty, you're not in compliance, my 1st mos was abn medic - we had to use our pockets

What bugs me is a bunch of office personnel deciding what the uniform should look like. Who decided a light colored uniform was good for mechanics? Oil and the ACU uniforms do not mix. They are impossible to keep clean. Fleece jacket ? Give me a break. The AF uniforms are good for the office but not in the field.

Honestly for me it isn't a uniform issue, but yet at the same time it is. Officers jacking up a salute. I was on a funeral detail for at least two years and I had to work with some officers to make sure that the fallen soldier would get the respect they deserve. How that works is the person who is passing off the flag, has to be equal or higher rank than of the fallen soldier. Seeing officers during those funerals either doing a straight up knife hand, or another which I call it an eye patch, it drives me up a wall. Us enlisted are almost "required" to salute you. We have taken time and energy to practice it. Please give us the same respect, with all due respect.

I hate the Velcro. Everything on the ACUs is Velcro. The newer ones have buttons now like the old BDUs but you can't get cuffs as tight around the wrists as you used to. I wish there was no Velcro. Hopefully with the next type of uniform we can have zippers or something not Velcro. Velcro collects fuzz, lint, and you stick to other people. It's horrible.

Strings! They are everywhere. I check after I wash my clothes, it was part of basic that stuck with me, but my entire AFSC is attention to detail. Worse yet is when someone mentions it and the person goes"yeah, I know". We work with scissors in the drawer next to us all day, use them.

My biggest peeve is wearing utility caps like baseball caps (jammed down on the head). I've seen 17 year SNCOs do this, and it drives me up the walls. The cap is suppose to be resting on the top of your head with a flat top and the bill almost in line with your eyebrows.

My personal pet peeve for uniforms is the shabby practice of soldiers (especially officers) who will spend their entire duty day without setting foot on grass or dirt wearing fatigue or battle uniforms.

Not only is the battledress inappropriate attire, but the practice inevitably leads to attempts to make the uniform equivalent of blue jeans look sharp -- e.g. bans on actually filling those high-capacity pockets because bulging pockets are unsightly.

Why not just wear neatly pressed Class B uniforms with clearly visible rank insignia?

This may not be an irk or a pet peeve, but it may fit here... bear with me...

So the application of the civilian head covering used to be an honorable trend, men would wear a hat and tip it as a gesture of approval, they would take their hats off as respect, they would hang it by the door, etc. Needless to say, the military's view for the hat came about in part due to the American trend for hat respect. Now to my point... We don't hold the same value of the civilian head covering as we once did, sure we wear hats; but, we wear them everywhere, to include at the dinner table, inside, when talking to our mothers, etc. Why make the hat a necessity in uniform now, if our view of the head covering isn't the same. I'm not saying hats are bad, I'm saying hats are great, but if we're not on par with how to hat, then why hats?

Once again, maybe not exactly a pet peeve/irk...

I came across a couple O-6s all with hands in pockets. I saluted, made google eyes at the hand, and he left it out, and he looked over and the others removed theirs. I cannot be sure, but I think they cut on me after I walked past. It was one of those life moments that I really wanted to approach them again but was too afraid.

The sad results of that encounter was my spite meter pinged a little, and I started double thinking what is this thing we are doing here. Not that some O-6s had their hands in their pockets, but the fact that I felt uncomfortable correcting them.

I would have to say misplaced patches and badges. I've seen an Army O-2 with headgear on inside, EOD unit patch with 101st combat patch, air assault wings, infantryman badge, and his flag was upside down. And he couldn't verify anything about anything in his uniform. I wanted to slap the daylights out of him but all I could do was call hi out on his stolen valor. That's my worst pet peeve - stolen valor.

Not the wear of a particular uniform, but could you tell me why every Chief of Staff (pick your service) seems to think a new uniform needs to be created? If they would at least make sure any changes are to fix a valid issue great. But what is this "exculsive" crap they seem to want? I mean they whine about "personnel costs" but can pay millions (if not more) for a new gee whiz uniform that doesn't fix any of the problems of the old ones. The AF blue cammo is a prime example, then the wonderful ACU's that were only one heavy weight but expected to be worn in the desert. How about they save some money and design utility uniforms for the types of distinct missions being performed across the military? You can have your spiffy non-utility and service dress uniforms that are distinctive by service. But this foolish "my camo pattern is better than yours" crap has to stop. Just pick one and require that all future changes be justified by identification of a actual problem being corrected without causing another worse problem.

My problem with the navy dress uniforms is that you can't wash them and dry them in a machine. You have to dry clean them. I wish the navy would switch the dress uniform to dress pants a dress shirt you can put ribbons and metals on with a tie. You could wash it and dry it as well as iron it quick. This is important be we have to wear our dress uniform for watches on a regular basis and it would make managing their care a lot easier and less expensive. A big plus for low enlisted ranks.

My biggest pet peeve is the incorrect wear of covers (garrison, eight point, knit watch cap, command ball cap, dixie cup, etc.)

Eight point and watch caps especially, because we wear NWU's most often. Too many people wear the eight point it like it's a baseball hat or don't have it square upon their head. The watch cap is supposed to be worn snug on your head, not pulled back like some hipster going to see a show in Williamsburg.

It's nitpicky, I know, but uniform regulations are there for a reason. So that our entire force looks UNIFORM.

Aside from the obvious (pockets...which I may or may not be guilty myself from time to time...sorry!), My biggest pet peeve is rank patches being crooked.

There is absolutely NO REASON for that! It's velcro! Take the 5 seconds it takes to set it on straight! If you can't do it properly, ask a battle buddy to assist you. If you notice somebody with a crooked rank, tactfully approach the subject and help them fix themselves. Please and thank you.

For enlisted or flag officers even that have on base jobs to have wrinkles all over there uniform. Working in the ceremonial detail, I'm held to the same uniform standards as a CG company commander (which is strict to say the least) and for me to put hours into my uniform mantinence and to see officers with bad uniforms. I know it might not be against the AFI but when I was stationed at Sheppard AFB, the AITs would get done with class run up to their rooms grab a pair of shorts throw them on and run out still wearing their tan shirt and knee high green socks! I can think of a million other things to be irked by than having hands in pockets. I've been in for 15 years and have had 5 deployments and throughout all of it I always had hands in my pockets. I was inducted into the SAMC as a plain ole sergeant and all the while I had my hands in my pockets. Job performance is the true sign of how professional a Soldier is, not hands in fucking pockets.

I just do not understand why it's so hard to read, I mean these soldiers (O1 and up) (E1 and up) have uniform tops that are entirely too small or against regulation. They are either too short or the Velcro doesn't work anymore. That is an unserviceable uniform or its ashy like white ashes!

Personally, I know that when I put on a carefully prepared dress uniform I stand a little straighter, a few inches taller. Why? Pride in service! I believe this is true for the vast majority of service members regardless what branch they are in. Unfortunately this doesn't really translate to the working uniforms (ACU's, NWU's, BDU's, whatever you want to call them) they ALL tend to look sloppy. The best you can do is iron it and starch the hell out of the damn pocket flaps! We could have discussions or arguments for days which service has the best, (personal favorite is NWU Type III) but in the end they are all hard to make look sharp. As a sailor, I miss the old dungarees and chambray shirts. You could spot a squared away sailor a mile away!

The purpose of uniforms and uniformity is to illustrate that members of an organization:
a) belong to an organized entity;
b) live and work according to a recognized standard within that organization;
and are c) outfitted with the same basic equipment as all others in the organization.

That being said, I entered the Army when DA (the SMA, usually) decided when the seasonal uniform change was (summer/winter, sleeves up/down). This change was usually (in Germany) the 3rd week of April/ 3rd week of October. For each season there was a specifically authorized combination of uniform items that could be worn as a basic uniform. MACOM (BN/Squadron) Commanders could, of course, modify this uniform locally to fit weather conditions on an as needed basis (in Germany, think wet weather gear). Point being, we all looked the same on the post. Today, with all the uniform variations available for Soldiers in the TA-50 bag (think of the 12 or so items belonging to the GEN III cold weather outfit), there appears to be anarchy in the ranks. For an example, the GEN III Fleece jacket issued is not designed as an outerwear garment: there is no place for DUI on the sleeves, and it is not resilient enough as an outerwear item. The GEN III outer Jacket has a place for DUI and is similar enough to the ACU jacket (the summerwear outer uniform) to be worn as outerwear , but again, is not resilient enough as an outerwear item. The M65 Field Jacket was, however.

I have spent considerable time teaching my Soldiers the proper wear of the GEN III system, and have spent more time correcting and informing others who have worn it improperly.

IMHO, we need to get back to a common standard of appearance so we look like a professional organization rather than a group of people who all shop at the same store. That would be a start. And Hands in the pockets? No way. The army issues gloves for that.

Sam Browne belts. In the Marine Corps, most officers buy them, but it is a OIC decision to wear them or not. We all WANT to wear them, it makes the uniform look so much better, and it makes us look like...officers. But there's the cheapskates that don't buy them. It should be required and part of the service/dress uniforms. There have been campaigns to try to change the regs, so far unsuccesfull.

My biggest pet peeve is when a soldier wears their PC at the top of their head in an attempt to not ruin their hair. First off AR 670-1 states that a PC should be worn parallel to the marching surface as well as placed on the largest circumstance of your head. Second, wearing it at the top just looks ridiculous and makes me belive that there are many more uniform violations.

Reporting an incident of sexual assault and being chastised for the next year + for it by the command until said command is relieved of duty and then still walking around with fear in your eyes. Hope that 1SG and MSG are enjoying retirement.

On another note, I agree with the one about the gap and socks being visible. But i can't stand when one SGM in a combat zone stands at the dfac doors and makes people unblouse their britches from their boots just to see what color socks they are wearing. And then forces them to write an essay about it.

BDU pockets being starched flat on both the blouse and trousers. Yeah, it was a thing at Fort Meade back in the 80's. It was almost impossible to keep the pockets flat and you weren't allowed to sew them flat. The NCO's would actually fluff the pockets to make sure you hadn't sewn them down. Then another NCO would see the pockets fluffed after that and jump your a** for not having flat pockets.

My biggest pet peeve is Army wide (may be DoD wide, too). I enlisted in 2003. When I went to the recruiter's office, everyone in there was wearing Class A. When I went to MEPS, again, everyone (from any branch) was in A or B uniforms. When I got to Reception BN, and then on through OSUT and follow-on schools, everyone outside of a training environment wore... you guessed it! Class A or B uniforms. Our Army, and from what I can see, military as a whole, has gotten into this field uniform mentality. At first, the excuse was "to remind everyone we were a country at war." However, civilians already know this. Anyone in the military definitely knows this. So, why not show pride in your profession? I equate this to seeing a patrol officer from the local PD wearing some tactical uniform while writing tickets. In a big city or something, maybe it's a tactical officer who's working patrol. But in my small town, I know that we don't have a SWAT team. We have a K9 (who wants to get a nice uniform smelling like dog), but everyone else should look the part. The same goes for our military. I loved my pickle suit. I don't care as much for the ASU, and definitely don't care as much for the Class B version. However, I do care for service pride. Besides, what's the point of earning ribbons if they're displayed on special occasions only? As a reservist, I wear my ASUs all of one, maybe two times per year. If that. I know AD guys that do the same. Makes no since. I'd love to see a return to a professional looking military. Rant over.

All I have to say is Navy dress whites and working whites, there a ton of irks there, guys that think those grey boxers won't be seen or the female that thinks her sexy pink thong won't be seen. Come on people they are white an although there is a lining you can still see the line of where your underwear line stops when they are white what makes you think someone isn't going to see the other colors or the nude but cheek color. I personally find them very disrespectful to the uniform and to the people that can't help but see the bright pink in a sea of white.

Reading the comments, my biggest ones seem to be addressed en masse. So here's one I didn't see addressed, boot blousers. Yes I know they are in reg, and no I don't pester people about them, but I never liked them. I think it's an unprofessional look to be able to see someone's socks when they sit down or when those things inevitably ride up, and doing anything in the field in west TX invariably leads to chiggers. I tried to warn my solders of this before doing land nav at Bliss, but you could tell at PT the next day who used blousers in the sticks and who tucked their pants in.

Cargo pockets on ACU trousers open. Sadly this not the Soldiers(meaning me too) fault most times. Majority of the ACUs have Velcro fasteners and after the first tug the Velcro is shot forever. I heard they are starting to issue them with buttons... if only my unit had the money so I could DX my entire issue for them.

biggest pet peeve: wearing gloves w/ out a jacket. If it's cold enough for gloves then it's cold enough to wear a jacket. And when temps are in the single digits or teens how stupid you look w/out a jacket on (I'm talking about folks w/ short sleeve uniforms in Winter and no jacket). You were issued a jacket. Wear it.

Overall, I hate when I see SM ESPECIALLY leaders i.e. NCOs & Officers walk past uniform deficiencies and not say anything. I am THAT NCO that will stop you and correct you (with Tact) if you are wrong no matter were we are! I hate seeing people avoid correcting someone just because it's not their Soldier, or because he's on the other side of the PX, etc. You cant expect, what you don't inspect. Chances are, if you wont make the correction outside your unit footprint, you're probably not doing it at all, or avoid such standards yourself.

In my days as a First Sergeant I would always encounter individuals with hands in their pockets and remind them about being professional. Should they respond back with anything other than thank you or an apology I would ask them if they still had the gloves that were issued to them in basic and also if they spent their annual clothing allowance appropriately.

First of all having your hands in your pockets in in no way showing that you do not have discipline.
Like others have said a rule should have a good reason behind it.
I had plenty of experiences in the Navy where gloves were not an option because of the nature of the work yet there were times that it was below zero outside and the little bit of warmth made life a little more bearable.

Secondly it is the SNCO that has a warm office, a warm cup of coffee and much better accommodations that is yelling at the junior who is working out in the cold or under much more uncomfortable conditions.
Sorry but complaining about unimportant things like having your hands in your pockets while you are taking a short break and trying to base someone's career on that is just you nitpicking. And it is a reason that I am glad that I am out.

My biggest pet peeve is the train to standard not time method. EX. I say that because PT is mandatory but to extend the time shouldn't be mandatory because you can get a great workout so to me time has no place at PT because in 45 mins if you apply yourself you can be crucial

Without a doubt, seeing Soldiers, Airman and the occasional Sailor in Walmart or the grocery store in utilities. Drives me absolutely bat shit. Of all the uniforms that are issued, why does DOD allow troops to run around in their field uniform. For that matter also flying on commercial air on leave. Why not put on either service or dress uniform and look sharp instead of looking like you just got up from a Shamu nap under a tree. This is also a recent thing. My opinion only. The Marine Corps doesn't allow this behavior. Wear your chucks all you want to Walmart, but get out of the car in utilities, STFB. Semper Fidelis.

Referring Soldiers by "E-Grades". I despise it! We don't refer our Commisioned Officers as an "O-Grade". I will correct you on spot if you state, for example, "E-4s". I know what you're getting paid. Head gear for me. Even a decade after the Army came out with the black beret, way too many senior NCOs and officers still could not wear it properly. Also, I do not like to see people wearing the patrol cap without some kind shaping to it. I know it is not against AR 670-1 but to me it does not look professional when Soldiers wear it all puffed up on the head. As a minimum, at least push it down.

For me... the lack of pride and self discipline that some Soldiers have. If you're in this line of work, be proud of your service. Your ASU is your resume and the epitome of pride in YOUR service and YOUR accomplishments. Make it perfect. Same goes for the ACU (whichever pattern is currently in use). Be proud of your military appearance and wear it right.

Look, for the most part we understand your position as a SNCO/Officer. In every forum, we greatly respect your knowledge and wisdom that you've earned through years of service. We also understand that you have to show face for your subordinates. If the next 10-15 minutes consists of you simply re-stating what we have just heard, though, especially with little to no additions or rewording, then please do everyone the biggest favor you can do at that moment, and opt to just not talk. Or pick a different subject. Or do literally anything else with our time, instead of making us hear the same speech, from a different location, with a different vocal pattern. If you have nothing pertinent to say that has not already been said, then just don't talk. Please.

My pet peeve? Hearing from soldiers returning from a military school that the Commandant of the school set the SOP that Soldiers are NOT allowed to wear skill badges or tabs on their uniform while they're a student. Who are they to supersede Army regulations authorizing you to wear what you've earned? AR670-1 gives a Commander the option to order Soldiers to wear the skill badges/tabs, but it doesn't give Commanders the right to order them removed from uniforms. AR670-1, Chapter 22, 22-2, 22-3.
