As dumb and disrespectul as this Soldier's actions were, I would like to think/hope that this behavior is correctable. First off, no one is perfect. I will admit that I have made plenty of dumb mistakes myself in years past (not quite this bad, but still...). Had my leaders crucified me for my actions rather than helping me correct them, I probably wouldn't be where I am now. That being said, I feel a major attitude adjustment is required for this Soldier to develop further. To be a Soldier and not respect the symbol of our nation and the ideals it represents that hundreds of thousands of our brothers and sisters have bled, killed and died for is a shame. There is nothing professional about it. Saluting the flag is an honor and a privilage, not an inconvenience. Maybe this Soldier is too young and inexperienced to realize this yet, but I hope a little professional development by her leaders educates her on how misguided and dishonorable her actions really are.

My thoughts on this "problem child" as well as the other one's we have seen conduct themselves in such a disgraceful manner recently is that they are the biggest POS that I have had the displeasure of seeing in public display. This is a result of a lack of self-discipline on the part of individuals that have no sense of pride in their country or it's symbol or the sacrifices of those that have come before them. They, unfortunately, are a direct reflection of the period in time and the societal culture from which they come. They are members of a generation of self-entitled individuals that are all about themselves and the rest of us be damned. I disagree with some that say it is a reflection of their leadership, I never understood that point from when I served and was a TC/PSG/NCOIC; my Soldiers were properly trained, disciplined and led so when one of them screwed the pooch, ie. DUI, etc, it was a reflection of their own stupidity and lack of self-discipline/intelligence, not their leadership. This Soldier, and I hesitate to use the term because she doesn't deserve it, posted another one after the original posting and it was brought to her CoC, she doesn't get it and never will based on her response, she's a self-serving attention whore that shouldn't have the privilege of defending this country of ours, much less wearing the uniform of a US Army Soldier!

SFC - I view the behavior of ALL my Soldiers as a reflection of me, and I want the public to think of me as a man of integrity, honesty and candor. I take pride in all I train and I want them to take pride in themselves. Obvioiusly, this idiotic Soldier learned neither lesson. I feel sorry for her FLL - I'm sure s/he is taking it the shorts about now.

Much butt hurt I sense from this event. Really you are only mad because she was bold enough to post it online. Don't act like you have never seen a bunch of people running at 1658 for the closest door. Hell I've seen Flag Officers running for a door or two since I've been in and I'm pretty new to the Army. They will kick her out for disrespecting the flag, conduct un-befitting of a soldier, she will get discharged "Dishonorably" not because she didn't salute, but only because the Military loves knee-jerk reactions to the highest level. Add that with staff cuts, why not throw her to the wolves.

I finally found the words for what I wanted to say, none of these actions are new under the Sun, the issue is the public displaying of it. Gone are the days of sweeping things under the rug, raising standards, and doing push ups is not going to fix this issue, getting people to understand the importance of what they do, and why they do it, that is how you fix this situation. When you tell a bunch of people straight out of the civilian world, you have to salute the flag, but give them no reason or understanding to why it has no meaning to them. Giving them a tasking they don't want to do and no providing a reason behind why it needs to be done with a sense of pride, will not get the best job out of anyone. This can also be seen in the civilian world as well.

Instead of yelling higher standards and more push ups, how about we get back into mentoring our juniors. Unit and higher history lessons, the history behind the three horns, give the reason for a tasking and why it is imporant (you might think you don't have to tell your soldiers anything, but you owe it to them to teach them why they do what they do, so they can be successful and take pride in doing it well).

SPC Smith. I agree to the extent that even the schools do not the Pledge of Allegiance or any of that patriotic observations. So it is no wonder why it is going in this direction.

Also, I commend you on your maturity and checking yourself because that is a sign of a leader. I have been out for quite a while and I know there were people who did this just not brag about it.

Besides what is being taught in basic and could this be an important part of it. Even if it is singing songs about the country as a cadence. Just a thought.

SSgt Olson, that is a lesson I learn from President Lincoln, he was very good at critizing things, but during the war he wrote a letter to a General critizing why he didn't advance his troops possibly ending the war in doig so. He never sent the letter, it is believed he took the time to realize nothing good would come from questioning the action without personally knowing the reason behind the decision. That being said, I try to think through all of my responses, am I providing a suitable second option in my critisizisms, if not maybe it is best to revisit the issue at a later time when my personal passions have come down.

I agree with you, we are dying from history unlearned, and repeating itself. We live by standing together, or die by falling apart. Look at our country, nothing ties us together, there is nothing holding the states together outside of land mass. Before there was functional need to work with neighboring states, steel mills of the Mid-West, ports on the coastal zones, farm land in the West, cattle in the South, manufacturing in the Northeast.

Basic is what it has always and will always be, the entry point to learn your weapons systems, and the day to day actions of the organization i.e. saluting, parade rest, excerise mechanics, attempting to take away individual identity and replace it with a group/mob mentality. Without proper military history education, even worst without proper L/S/N Government or basic history classes the idea of being proud of where you are from is minimal.

Personally I don't care if they post it on Facebook or not. When I get my stripes on April 1st, if I see it you're getting corrected. The problem is no one corrects the actions. It's time for every troop to take up the calling and start correcting it. General Military Authority. Put it to use regardless of rank. They'll know what they did wrong.

She's an idiot....as for today's Soldiers, there are far to many things to list and at the sake of hurting some feelings, I will just leave it at that!

Just because you are in the Army it doesn't make you a soldier. She is a perfect example of this. If he wasn't wearing a uniform you wouldn't even have guessed she was in the military. She doesn't display the Army values or any sense pride. To me she has failed to assimilate into the the Army culture. Many view their service as a job and not as service. And it looks like she good use a APFT. Maybe a bit on over on her BMI.

PO2 Tony Casler That is true. I have been told that the infantry is the last bastion of the Army. I know this be harsh but most other MOSs in the army have not preserved the sense of being a soldier and have moved into a civilian mentality. If you were to go to Fort Benning I think you would see a difference. I recall going down there while I was a SSG. I just looked at two PVTs walking by and they snapped to parade rest.

It seems the standards have been greatly reduced in the last 15 years. This has happened with Law Enforcement as well.

It's society setting new norms and the Army is feeling it.

CPT (Join to see) If all goes smoothly I should be drilling at Ft. Gordon within the next month or two, I am definitely curious to see how things have changed over the last 8 years. I'm not sure that I will have the chance to visit Ft Benning on duty but I'll keep it in mind if I happen to travel that way. The fact that Ft Jackson is a BCT facility floors me, I couldn't imagine a Sailor up at RTC Great Lakes walking through colors or honking their horn.
