Inasmuch as the phrase "Dog is man's best friend" uses "man" to mean humankind (which was the common usage until recently) a dog really is a woman's best friend. Women may master dogs just as well as men and dogs will serve their masters equally well regardless of gender. All things, especially valuable things, tend to attract trouble while a dog will always serve to protect. Oh, and don't expect a cat to protect anything or anyone. They're above the fray...
