What is the WORST that can Happen to Defense Secretary Ash Carter for his Personal Email use?

Should the American Public be concerned about our Leadership's Personal Email use. We see what it has done to Hillary Clinton. Now Defense Secretary Ash Carter has done the same thing. Should there be a Concern?

Of course. If we are concerned about what an enlisted soldier is sending, how can we not have even more concern what those at the highest levels are sending? They have more important data and they should know better.

Yes SPC Andrew Griffin this is definitely a concern that two of the most senior members of the POTUS Obama administration have used personal email to send official classified messages.
When I worked in the Pentagon from 1996 through 2009, all senior leaders had Blackberries and the most senior leaders had official systems they could access from home to send official correspondence.
Hillary Rodham Clinton and Ash Carter need to be held accountable for their actions of using private email to send official, correspondence which was classified. The number of military service members and DoD and Military Service civilians and contractors who have been relieved from duty or penalized for misusing the classified email system is probably in the thousands. Justice demands a review of not only these individual cases but classified email from every political appointee with DHS, DoD and DoS should be reviewed t ensure those with a need to know if anything has been compromised or accessed by our enemies because of lapses in judgement.

I can see this as a possible Achilles heel for him. Will he resign because of this? Unknown. Is it possible? Yes. If that happens, we'll have another new SecDef to finish out the term.

Given Manning and Snowden, the American people should be concerned with the Carter and Clinton private email usage.

OK my brain is officially boggled. When I had an array of Dot Mil accounts, only one could be used at home; NIPR, if you had a government laptop that had all the junk on it that made it useless for home anyways. NMCI is just another four letter word. The only "official" email I'd send was "What time is the meeting?" or whatever. That was pretty sparse. I would get some stuff on the Blackberry, but try reading a complex document on that. The sun does come up the next day and I can get my butt into the office.

I've seen instances of personal email abuse of official business. It invariably goes back to the individual thinking they're too important and that anoints them the right to do whatever while all the minions can't. For all the stuff thrown around about these cases, just think how little these people care about John Q. Public. It's all about them. I don't know enough about Ash's case to judge, but we sure do about others.

Yes we should be concerned, like others have said will he step down could happen. Should he be fired not right way but he should be investigated by an outside agency and if there was wrong doing then deal with him appropriately.

It is hard to know the legal consequences of his action at this point. We don't know if classified info was sent or not but a couple of things seem obvious.

1. He is not very smart. Having watched the events with Hillary Clinton unfold before his eyes, he gave no credence to the events or the possible outcomes.

2. He had little regard for the possibility of his correspondence being hacked. Even non classified information can give the enemy great insight into someone's mindset, proclivities, behaviors and personal information etc.

Why is it so difficult for senior level administration officials to get an official and secure email address? We now have two cabinet level people using personal email addressed to conduct government business. Official correspondence belongs to the government/people. It is not personal in nature.

It appears that he violated policy, I'm not sure that he broke any laws. It really comes down to his superiors and how they want to handle it. How many people in the DoD use personal email or even Facebook to handle routine unclassified business?

Nothing. We need to quit living in fear, to include fear of email scandals. I can bet a dollar to a dime that if we put every service member in jail for their family and friends announcing deployment dates and locations through social media or email, people of all ranks would change their tune.
