What is the the best part about living in the greater Louisville region?

I've personally never been stationed at Fort Knox and have always wondered what it was like living in that area. Everyone I've talked to seems to have great things to say about the people, location and mission there at the base.
What is your favorite thing about the greater Louisville region? Would love to hear any stories about your time being stationed there. Thanks in advance!

I always enjoyed Thunder Over Louisville which kicked off the Deby Festivities prior to the Kentucky Derby. Always a lot of fun. The Louisville Slugger Museum was always a great hit also. Can't forget about all the history on and around Fort Knox... Good times all around sir.

Any duty station is what you make of it. I have only been to FT Knox for AIT, H8 school, and BNCOC. During AIT and H8 of course I didn't get to do much. During my 4 months there for BNCOC I did get to get out and and see a lot of things. I think I could really enjoy a few years there if I were to get stationed there, but for me I am off to FT Drum this summer and that will be my final duty station. I wish you the best if that is the route you choose.

Right now it's March Madness with the games at the Yum Center. But on an average day it's the cost of living. Everything is so much cheaper here!

I grew up and lived in the midwest (SW Ohio - Cincinnati) into my twenties. My time spent at Ft. Knox was a great learning experience under a terrific mentor. The area itself & the people are warm, welcoming, and generally gracious. Louisville has plenty to offer and the surrounding area expands on that. The drive to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or Tennessee is reasonably short and gives you a tremendous kaleidoscope of activities and culture to experience.

Ft. Knox has a rich history and, if memory serves, is constantly updating the post. I do have to say it has been some time since my last visit but as with most things - the more things change, the more they improve on the same. I can't pin down one favorite, but the ability to travel a few hours and experience a myriad of things is an advantage. Sporting events cascade year around. The ability to sample a range of regional food is certainly a positive.

I can't think of anything negative that stands out about the post so I would put that in the positive side of the ledger. Hope that helps a little.

Sorry for not responding sooner, I have been away from my computer. I am not sure if it is fair of me to even speculate at this point...it has been many years since I lived there, but you know me, I will anyway! lol!

I loved the people, just like everywhere else, there is 'bad' parts and people. The vast majority that I met were amazing. Yes, I have a soft spot for the 'southern drawl'. I also loved how life moves at a slower pace. If you were enjoy the outdoors, you will love the area. When I was there, I used to go rock climbing a lot. I don't know if I could put my finger on why I love that area, there is just something about it that feels like home.

I haven't been back since they moved the Armor Center out of Ft. Knox. I can't wait until I get my orders so I can get back to that area. I am certain that you will enjoy love the area. I hoped that this helped.

I was never stationed there but grew up around Louisville/Southern Indiana and it is definitely a great place. Lots to do and a low cost of living.

I have lived many places and settled here. Love the people, cost of living, quality of life and four seasons (but winter isn't too bad). If anyone needs andove on the area feel free to ask.

Concur with everything others have contributed regarding the Greater Fort Knox and Louisville area. Louisville, with it over 30 communities, offers great shopping, cultural activities, sports and dining. The cost of living is lower than the national average but you do have to drive further to take advantage of these activities.

I've been stationed at Ft Knox three times including Basic Training. You're a short trip to Nashville, Indy, Cincinnati (If you want to see bad Baseball or your favorite team comes to town) and so many other places. It's a great area if you like the outdoors. Louisville is a Great little City (No disrespect) with lots to do. We just relocated here from the San Antonio/Austin, TX area and we love it so far. There will be snow but not what Chicago or Buffalo get and it doesn't get as hot as San Antonio.

I was born and raised in Jefferson County (where Louisville is) and strangely was sent to Fort Knox for basic training...go figure. Anyway being born and raised near Fort Knox (I joke the tank ranges were my lullaby) there is a lot to see and do. If you enjoy the outdoors, there are lots of outdoor activities both on and off post, other than mountain climbing you are likely to find it within a hour or less drive. Louisville has several museums, a 100 year old steamboat and spends two weeks partying for a 2 minute horse race in May. We do have 4 distinct seasons, but a favorite saying is if you don't like the weather wait 24 hours...I have seen KY go from clear skies to severe weather including tornadoes to snow in a 24 hour period. I have been complimented by many people around the world on our friendliness and hospitality. Although there are a few "GI Towns" right off-post, Louisville for the most part has not been affected by that very much. In civilian life before and after my service, I have worked with dependents & retired military that decided to retire at Fort Knox rather than return to their hometown.
