I would say for most, the transition from E4 to E5 is rough. More often than not, once promoted, not only is the new NCO trying to figure out his/her new role but more often than not, he/she is trying to do so in a new team because the command team doesn't want him/her trying to lead the same E3s and E4s that they came up in the ranks. It can all also be frustrating to try and find answers from senior NCOs only to be told to find the answer for yourself. Again, this transition is not easy at all.

Now I would say some become lazy. Some might feel as though they are above details and things like that. However, I encourage young leaders to stay involved. This is where you will form a lot of your leadership skills and earn the respect of the junior enlisted. Most buck SGTs have had a position as a team leader or squad leader berfore being promoted.

I have a different theory. In some units the command isn't looking out for their best interest. They are looking for personal gain and OER bullets. I'm living this horror story as weak speak.
