Army National Guard to AFROTC to pilot?
I’m currently in the Army National Guard in the state of Utah, I was in BYU’s ROTC program but after coming to BCT and AIT under the Simultaneous Membership Program, I’ve realized that I’d much rather pursue my dream of flying in the Air Force. My Air Force ROTC cadre says that it is possible, but that they’re not sure if I’m allowed to accept the scholarship benefits that I got from basic, i.e. the MGI kicker, the 20k enlistment bonus, the STA. I haven’t actually applied/accepted any of it yet, but it’s all in my contract and I was planning on using it to pay for my degree. Any tips or advice? My original contract was for 6 years of enlisted service to National Guard and it was going to be overridden by army ROTC to allow me to go active duty upon commissioning. But now I have to separate with DD form 368(?). I’m a bit lost in the madness, does anyone have knowledge or experience with this process?

Since you are in Utah you might consider transferring to the 211th Aviation. They have an Apache Bn and a Blackhawk Bn in the state If you pass the flight physical you will have many opportunities to fly and you will keep your education benefits. Many of their pilots also fly for Delta and other airlines for their civilian jobs and if you want to pursue an airline career they can help you in that area also

That’s a great idea, thank you! Do you know if there’s a way to get pre-approved for a flight physical while I’m still here in ROTC? It would make my academic pursuits a lot more clear.

We had a Cadet a year ahead of me that planned on branching Aviation and he got his flight physical done by ROTC Cadet Command. I think he did it at Advanced Camp. You could also SMP with the 211th and they could do it

Why not consider Army Aviation?

I really wanted to fly fixed wing, and I secretly hope for that envied fighter jet slot. I’m also partly hoping to carry on family tradition, as both my father and grandfather were members of the Air Force. But still, Army aviation is a possibility. It was my initial plan in fact, they promised me more money and made it seem quite possible.
I suppose I just realized that the Air Force is a bit more aligned with my ultimate goals.

The DA 638 is what you will need to be released from the National Guard. Keep in mind that it is completely up to your state to release you and they may not do so because of your enlistment incentives. If they do release you, you will be paying back all money you received from enlisting.
