Especially if they were going to transition to a position related to national security.

The most USEFUL course for me in my civilian life was CAS3 hands down, with ILE/CGSOC a distant second. I have consistently used little tricks from CAS3 from then to this day to shape the direction of my civilian organizations and to get what I want. I know one peer who made a consulting CAREER out of little more than "really getting" the DECMAT and the decision briefing template. When in my civilian role, I use both of those on at least a monthly basis, as well as several others. You learn the formulaic answers for what will get you through patrols in Ranger School, but more importantly, you are taught how to think and apply that 5th principle of patrolling--common sense.

The course begins each of the eight days of patrols with receipt of a mission via OPORDER and assigning leadership to your random group of 15-20 soldiers. Within about three hours, the group has to come together and the squad leader must brief a detailed product, which usually takes about an hour to hour and a half to pitch. Additionally, all preperations for the mission, such as equipment and ammo loadout, weapons maintaince, comms and tie downs must be complete, so that the mission can begin immediately after the brief. This forces teamwork and organization under intense time pressure, and those lesons will be useful for a lifetime.

Not only do they teach the "how" to conduct patrols, field OPORDs, terrain models, status cards, conduct PCCs/PCIs, and task organize a team of strangers, they also teach the "why". I left with a much deeper understanding of how to translate initial intent and an order into execution, how to take organize a group of peers, and how to get things done with minimal resources and analog products.
