What is the most prominent issue in today’s Army culture and how would you fix it?

Personally I believe that the lack of respect of the uniform
and disregard for the standards is one of the biggest issues. In my opinion I
think the NCO Corps as a whole needs to do better at enforcing the standards.
Our upcoming leaders are learning from us and without the right example they
will learn the wrong things.

Allow DSs to be what they once were in IET/OSUT, lends itself to better disciplined Soldiers...as well as allowing NCOs to be what we once were. I never bought the line that we "gave our power away", somewhere along the way the Army "told" us that our Soldiers had more power than we did and it trickled down and some of our SrNCOs and Officers acted accordingly.

Alcohol abuse by soldiers who are not responsible enough to drink. I say we take it out of the barracks.

The uniform is wash and wear you can't really make it look good so everyone runs around looking like they just jumped on a wrinkle bomb. No boots to shine I just had to teach a soldier how to spit shine his jump boots yesterday Scary Scary day's ahead.

We should go back to starched and pressed BDU's and spit shined boot's If you look good in uniform you'll feel good. That will build confidence. as your confidence grows so does your pride and so on and so on then before you know it your not only meeting the standard you are raising it.

I think is the failure lies with the senior leaders unwillingness to coach, train, and mentor their subordinates. how often do Sergeants Major take the time to mentor the SFC's and MSG's, or train other NCOs and junior enlisted. I think senior NCOs are too concerned with their own careers to make sure their subordinates have the tools to be successful. A leaders only concern should be to prepare their subordinates to take over their job.

I would say the most prominent issue (in my opinion) is the overall lack of discipline throughout the Army. It just isn't what it used to be. Soldiers don't show NCO's and Officers the same respect that used to be demanded of them, NCOs and Officers aren't as well rounded and professional as before. Or at least they don't have the desire to learn and be experts in their field. A lot of it stems from the current generation's view that they can get whatever they want by putting out minimum effort. They have a huge sense of entitlement that I've never seen before. It falls on the NCO's to demand high standards from their Soldiers, and I just don't see it happening like it should be.

I see more and more issues that should be handled at the team leader/ squad leader level being handled by the PSG or above. We aren't empowering our junior leaders and then we wonder why they fail when they are promoted to a position of greater responsibility.
