What is the best Aircraft ever?

i saw a lot of C-130s myself and they still are running strong. At LRAFB at one time they supported around 100 C-130s, 2 KC-135 (707) and a few Titan IIs.

What is your opinion on these birds? Any suggestions?

I agree and I would add A-10 and UH-1.    At LRAFB we had around 100 C-130s and they were worthy and a good expense.  My dad worked on B-52s and some of those aircraft will be closing in on one hundred hears before retired.

I was stationed at Bitburg, AB Germany in the Reagan years and spent two years providing security for F-15's.  They were impressive watching them in a max climb after take off on a clear day until you couldn't see them.<br>

I think the F-15 is far better than the F-16. I have worked several fighters (F-15, F-16, F-4, and F-111) and the F-15, from a maintainers perspective, is better designed. It also has an impressive kill ratio and better radar and avionics. The F-15 is also more durable IMO. From an old Infantryman's view, the A1-E, it's replacement A-10, C-130, and the AH-1. No fast mover will make my list because they can't provide "good" close air support and their on-station time sucks. I always had to clear the air space for the fast movers because they could only be used for about 15 minutes before having to pull off and refuel. Sorry all you F and B fans. I know this dates me.

If you throw a cargo aircraft in there you have to have the C-17 in there. I have only worked from the jumping out of them standpoint but for getting in and out it seems like an amazing airframe. I do love the C-130 and the new J model proves you can keep the old warhorse down but there is something about the C-17.

I'll grant you the B-52 since it first flew in 1955, and it is still in service today. What that tells me is that before it flew there were 52 years of aviation going back to the Wright Brothers, and as of this year it's been in service for 58 years which means that it has been flying for more than half of our history of flight. The C-130 is a great multipurpose aircraft which also adds to arguments on its behalf. Can't really agree or disagree on the F-16, but I guess I'll defer to your expertise on the subject.

I know I'm just an ignorant non airwinger Marine, but I'd like to add the B-29 to the list. 1 it had a long range for its era, the only platform to drop atomic weapons in war, and was copied by the Soviets as the Tu-4. I think that means it has Stalin's vote too.<br>

Well, I can say my favorite aircraft have always been the SR-71 and the A-10, but as for the 'best' American produced aircraft? I think it would be hard to argue with something like the C-130. Been in service for over 50 years, done everything from air lift to refueling to gunship to laser test bed, over 2300 of them made, holds the record for largest & heaviest aircraft to land on a carrier, and it is pretty iconic with American military deployments. I don't even think I could venture to guess how many troops, supplies, vehicles, fuel, mail, humanitarian aid or weapons that have been shipped and/or dropped by C-130's. And one thing that differentiates it from other long service American Aircraft like the B-52 or DC-3 on the civilian side? They are still making them. Not just still flying them, but still building them. The C-130 J series are rolling off the line right now and being operated by not just the US, but 17 other countries.

And I have a feeling that the request for proposals for a new aircraft to replace it, will end up being a C-130K instead of a new clean sheet aircraft. It simply has the formula right for what it does, which is everything.

I was sorta partial to the "Baselball bat with wings" that was the A6, but I can attest to the longivity and servicibility of the C-130.<div>    I once saw one at VMGR 252 arrive on only one working engine, and I knew a pilot who was flying as a 3rd generation C-130 pilot.  That alone says something about the  aircraft, that there is a need for it, and a use that no other aircraft we have, will suit half as well.  Flying gas stations, troop movements, equipment transport, gun ships, even capable of landing and taking off on carriers... those old 'Piggies' are just amazing.</div>

I think there are several aircraft that can be added to the list. The Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, North American P-51 Mustang, Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Grumman F-6F Hellcat, North American F-86 Sabre, and the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker.<br><br>The B-17 was known for taking a beating and still able to get her crews home. Google "B-17 All American" for one such example. Next up the P-51 Mustang. When it could finally go all the way to Berlin (due to drop tanks and improved performance), dog fight with the Germans and come back home it helped change the course of the war in Europe. The P-47, the predecessor to the A-10. This plane could dog fight, but excelled in low level destruction of armor, trains, troop carriers and other ground equipment. The F6F Hellcat achieved a kill ratio and record that still stands today. It was instrumental in helping to defeat Japan. The F-86 was another excellent fighter. It had impressive kill to loss ratio that helped control the skies over Korea. Finally the legs of America's air arm, the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. It was instrumental during the Vietnam War topping off many a thirsty fighter on it's way home. It was also a critical component during the Cold War. It was able to keep SAC's Airborne Command post flying till each plane could be relieved by another one. Then there are the numerous conflicts since then where they have been called on and still are to help keep our fighting jets and bombers in the air longer. These are just my additions to the list. There are more but some of you have already covered them.<br>

Looks like this is an ALL Army / Air Force crowd. Let me bring some
diversity to the conversation and talk about multifunctional purposes of top rated aircraft; my opinion of course and in no particular order.<br><br>-F/A-18 Super Hornet, Close Air Support, Bombing, Air-to-Air Combat and sizable payload.<br><br>-F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (see above)<br><br>-AC-130 (Spooky/Specter) Precision close air support and target softening; Limited Offensive Operations (night mostly / slow moving)<br><br>-B52 Bomber- Vietnam Power House / Huge Payload, needs escort no need to say more.<br><br>-F-16/F-15/F-14 all solid aircraft, all outdated; hence we sell them to foreign countries.<br><br>I would "like" to believe the aircraft quality changes for the better over time and with the different scope of missions that each service component engages in.<br>

I have to disagree about the A-6 EA-6, F-14 too many maint. man hours to flight hours. I heard that A-7's had to fly cap because all the tomcat where down for maint during desert storm. This was while I was stationed at Point Mugu working on Tomcats.

Can't believe you left out the A-10.<div><br></div><div>C-130 - workhorse of just about any military.</div><div><br></div><div>B-52 - just an astonishing piece of craftsmanship.</div><div><br></div><div>Both of these aircraft were designed extremely well and because of that they are able to right the success train for decades. I would like to see if any of the aircraft designed today and still in service or flyable in 60-70 years.</div>

<p>Ok, IMO the list is close, but not spot on.  You have to look at the abilities and base your decision on that.</p><p><br></p><p>A.  A-10 Warthog "Thunderbolt".  When General Electric delivered the gun to Fairchild for them to build an aircraft around, the Air Force was instantly excited at the results.  You are talking about an aircraft built with over 1200lbs of Armor, a titanium "Tub" for the pilot, and more firepower than any other aircraft in the sky designed for close support, and Air-to-ground.  The A-10 has brought home countless pilots in aircraft that shouldn't have stayed in the air.  I can say from experience that there is nothing like the sound of 'brrrraaaapp" as you watch them do a diving gun run.</p><p><br></p><p>B.  AC-130 Spectre Gun Ship "Spooky".  Ground commander knew early on in Vietnam that they needed more airsupport than they were getting, and out of a demand for more airpower came the AC-47 based on the military spec DC3s.  These aircraft proved to be the deciding factor in many battles, and saved many a grunts butt during a firefight.  A couple of aircraft later came the C-130s turn for modification and induction into the Spooky family.  Take a cargo plane as maneuverable as a fighter, add artillery, grenade launchers, and miniguns, and you have one bad bird.  As of 2010, AC-130s were being equipped with laser guided 105mm howitzer rounds.  Now heavy shells could be more accurately placed on target from much higher up thereby exposing the aircraft to less danger, a win-win for all involved</p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p>C.  F-14 Tomcat.  Following the failure of the F-111B program, the Dept of Navy realized they needed something that could fill the air superiority role, be deployable by ship, and could put ordnance on target on ground as well.  The Tomcat was that aircraft.  Capable of selecting and prioritizing up to 18 targets at a range up to 110 NM, there wasn't much in the air that could beat them as the Lybians found out when two of their Floggers went up against two Tomcats in the Gulf of Sidra.  Both enemy aircraft were downed without any damage to either F-14.  </p><p><br></p><p>These are just a few of my favorites and I chose to stick with more modern aircraft as they are my true passion, but anything aviation wise really gets my blood flowing.  Here are some of my other favorites</p><p><br></p><p>Historical:</p><p>P-47 Warhawk</p><p>F4 Corsair</p><p>P-38 Lightning</p><p>P-51 Mustang</p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p>Rotary</p><p>AH-64 Apache</p><p>AH-1 Cobra</p><p>UH-1 Iroquois</p><p>CH-47 Chinook</p><p>ACH-47 Guns A go go</p><p>AH-60 DAP</p><p>AH-6 Little bird</p>

From a Soldier's perspective it has to be the A-10 Warthog and AC-130 Spectre Gunship without a doubt!  Hands down they are the best close air support aircraft in existence!  The GAU-8 on the Warthog is insane!  And the howitzer on the AC-130 is awesome too.  It will be a sad day if the Air Force ever gets rid of the A-10.  That is a Soldier's aircraft to the bones!

I noticed the planes you listed are all fixed wing, what about the Apache!?
I know I am biased from a boots-on-ground perspective, but to me, the best aircraft ever produced are the A-10 warthog (keep calm and BRRRRT on)
and the AH-64.
While lacking in air-to-air ability like the F-16, they both have a wonderful array of sensors to over watch our ground troops, and provide a wealth of fire support for the men on the ground.
I know that because of those two aircraft I have buddies who are still walking on this earth today!

From an air superiority view though, The F-16 has been the best bang for the buck so far, but what about the F-22? Those raptors sure are something fancy!

For me it all starts with the Angel of Mercy also known as the Bell H-13 Medivac, Then we move to the Huey in Attack mode, and lets be honest, 30+ combat loaded troops running out of a PAX AC that is its own gun support, Lets all hear it for Guns A Go Go. I flew 135's but I have been partial to the C-17 as the best for all around Airlift. The best fighter IMO is not ours. I think the best all around fighter in the pure form is the Sukhoi SU-27 and its derivatives like the SU-35.

In reality its an open ended question, because each aircraft their uniqueness to the fight. I always thought the F-16 A was the best looking fighter followed by the SU-27 and Mig-29.

I'm a fan of close air support. WW II and Korea had the F-4 Corsair, Vietnam had the A-1 Skyraider, and now we have (had) the A-10. If I had to choose from those, I would.......avoid the question. Of course, if it wasn't for the P-51 escorting B-17's. This question is hard!

My father was an F4 pilot in Vietnam, but I'm going to have to say the B17. My grandfather was a B17 pilot. One buzzes my house each year for an airshow. It's magnificent. I managed to get a ride on a B17 and it was like a massive nerd-boner the entire time.

Great question Larry! Other-All of them. They all are iconic for their different roles in modern US military aviation history. You list the most famous and long living aircrafts in logistics, close combat support, aerial interception and strategic bombing and all are the best in their respective roles.

The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF designation) is a military transport aircraft developed in 1935, 80 years old next year, from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II and remained in front line service with various military operators to the present day.

The C-47 differed from the civilian DC-3 in numerous modifications, including being fitted with a cargo door and strengthened floor, along with a shortened tail cone for glider-towing shackles, and an astrodome in the cabin roof.

During World War II, the armed forces of many countries used the C-47 and modified DC-3s for the transport of troops, cargo, and wounded. The U.S. Naval designation was R4D. More than 10,000 aircraft were produced in Long Beach and Santa Monica, California and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Between March 1943 and August 1945 the Oklahoma City plant produced 5,354 C-47s.

Interesting no one has mentioned the B1 Bomber. Is this because it failed miserably during Desert Storm. It had to stay home and its crew chiefs were moved to transportation while in the desert.

My all time favorite helicopter is the Apache. Scary when it comes out from behind some bushes and you did not know it was there. Also the F117 for the same reason. Stand under it at night when it is flying and you will know why there are so many UFO sighting in the US.

Hands down the P-51 mustang, it was the right plane at the right time that could do things that no other plane could at the time. It could escort our bomber all the way to Germany and back. It with out a doubt saved many lives of the bomber fleet. I say lives saved matter more than service life.

If you want to look at service life then the DC-3/C-47 is the best, that old bird is still flying in remote places that would tear a modern aircraft apart.

I choose the BUFF. Its been around almost as long as myself... and it has served in so many theatres. I remember in high school, seeing them bombing in Viet Nam... I think Life Magazine's article with one releasing its entire load... they claim it was 104 750 pound bombs. By the time I went operational, be only 500, 1k, 2k (Mk 82-4) choices.
I remember doing range clearance off Pt Mugu for some Harpoon shots on a target hulk...and then the BUFF came in and scuttled the hulk.

When I was stationed on Diego Garcia in 85, I got to ride a KC-135 and what them tank a couple of BUFFs who were doing a training mission from Guam...flying all the way into the middle of the IO and back ... gotta be at least 12K miles round robin.

Then, during Desert Shield, I was TC/MC of a prototype special mission P3 and did and exchange tour of aircraft on Diego Garcia with a ready alert BUFF out of Maine configured for low level... it had a load of various cluster bombs destined for the Republican Guard a few months later. I was shocked at the massive corrosion... any Navy aircraft looking like that would have been instantly grounded. But they still did their missions magnificently. To this day, I still dont know whether that was the crew lost during Desert Storm over water.

Granted, I am biased (18 years flying various models of C-130), but any aircraft with the longevity and combat impact over the years, not to mention the versatility, has to be the winner.
The C-130 has done everything from move humanitarian supplies, conduct personnel recovery, drop a BLU-82 and MOAB, and provide non-traditional ISR and Fire support, and refuel other aircraft in-flight. It has to be the most versatile aircraft ever created, hands down.

Total production of all variants was 16,079.[1] More than 400 remained in commercial service in 1998. Production was as follows:

607 civil variants of the DC-3.
10,048 military C-47 and C-53 derivatives were built at Santa Monica, California, Long Beach, California, and Oklahoma City.
4,937 were built under license in Soviet Union as the Lisunov Li-2 (NATO reporting name: Cab).
487 Mitsubishi Kinsei-engined aircraft were built by Showa and Nakajima in Japan, as the L2D Type 0 transport (Allied codename Tabby).

Production of civil DC-3s ended in 1942. Military versions were produced until the end of the war in 1945. A larger, more powerful Super DC-3 was launched in 1949 to positive reviews.The civilian market, however, was flooded with second-hand C-47s, many of which were converted to passenger and cargo versions. Only three Super DC-3s were built and delivered for commercial use the following year. The prototype Super DC-3 served the US Navy with the designation YC-129 alongside 100 R4Ds that had been upgraded to the Super DC-3 specification.

C-5A, B, C and now M models. While stationed at Edwards Flight Test Center I worked C-130E, F-4C, E and RFs, A-7, B-52, RB-66, C-141, C-5, HH-53, and saw the A-10 fly-off against the A-9. All of this leads me to believe that I am old.

The P-51 was revolutionary, and arguably led to the defeat of the Luftwaffe. It gets my vote.

Honorable Mention to the OH-58 Kiowa - two of them pulled my bacon out of the fire in Iraq. I don't think we would have been able to break contact without their help.

It all depends on what you want to do with said aircraft:

SR-71 - Fastest air breathing aircraft (for top speed you have to look at the X-15)
A-10 - Close air support
C-5 - Heavy Lift
C-130 - the "Swiss Army Knife" Medium lift, STOL, gunship platform, fly's into hurricanes Refuel for the Navy, drops the heaviest bomb, long service life.
F-15 - Best Kill ratio ever.
F-22 Raptor, unproven, but high agility, supersonic without afterburner, can datalink with other raptors so that multiple aircraft can target multiple enemies and everybody targets a different foe. Oh did I mention stealth?

Out of absolute respect for an aircraft that has been in combat since the early 60's, I also nominate the OH-58 (Currently model D). The DoD, in it's infinite wisdom, has decided that the AH-64D Apache is much more suitable to take over the role of the highly capable OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. I pity the Apache maintenance teams who work insane hours to keep the Apache fully mission capable. It is the most advanced aircraft in the inventory, it also has the highest manhours required maintenance per flight hour. Whenever you meet Apache maintainers, shake their hands. They are now the most overworked maintainers in the Army. "The King is dead.....Long live the King!" Scouts Out. AIR CAV!!!

On what criteria? Every aircraft design is a compromise. No one design can do everything.

How about we choose the most beautiful? That would start a great argument. Let me tee it off with my vote for the P-51 Mustang.

How about the fastest? At least that can be scientifically measured. The SR-71 Blackbird (to sum, the ugliest aircraft)

How about the most "kills"? I think that the Gruman F6F Hellcat with 5,271 (P-51 Mustang is second with 4,950)

Most beloved by pilots? I'll leave that one for the pilots to debate.

Despite the vast number of aircraft we can probably find a criteria in which they are all the best...

Those little paper ones with the rubber band propulsion system are, they are easy to build, dont cost 5 arms and other appendages to build, costs no one their rank when it crashes , are a lot more environmentally safe than the big ones, dont have ANY noise pollution issues at all (unless you hit someone in the eye with it).

I love and hate this question! I love it because aircraft have always been a passion. I love aircraft as my father was a pilot with over 25,000 hours in both fixed and rotor and I fly some also. I hate it because I could never narrow it down to just one.

Of the aircraft mentioned I've got to say the C-130. It is used by every branch of service - that alone makes it one of the most special of all time. How many other aircraft have been/are used by all five branches, including the Coast Guard?

It has the longevity over the others mentioned and it does not have a replacement in site. The numbers being used by the US, the number being used by different countries, the number of countries who use it, the various configurations and the different environments they can operate in. The C-130 may very well end up being one of the longest serving and most common globally used airframes ever in history. Hauled my butt around Afghanistan a lot of times in OEF. I love me a HERC.

That is an F4-B from the Black Knights of VMFA-314. Stationed at MCAS El Toro, California. As that is not an N model (F4-N). The picture is probably pretty old. '60s or early '70's.

Also add that the configuration it is in. With wing tanks that is. Was unusual for Marine F4's. Who used the larger center line tank with no wing tanks (center line on belly in center of fuselage but not on this F4). Had always heard that an F4 with two wing tanks was significantly hampered in ACM. Whereas with just a center line tank. It could fight.

It is pretty clear that people read "best aircraft" and their brain saw: "aircraft that I personally think is the coolest."

The A-10 is not the 'best' aircraft ever. The C-130, F-4 or B-52 are not the 'best' ever. Not one of them is even close.

The -best- aircraft is the one that added the most to winning this country's wars, to accomplishing its missions and the one that the nation needed the most in time of war. And that aircraft is the B-17 Flying Fortress by a long sight.

Picture shows B-17F 'T.S.' of the 381st Bomb Group crash landed at Manston on 7/15/43. This aircraft survived a head-on collision with an FW-190.

"As "TS" was making her turn off the target, Lt. Weniger called in a pair of
FW-190's who were climbing at full rate on a parallel course, and when far
enough ahead reversing their course to make what he later described as a "balls
to the wall" forward pass. The ensuing events are best related in his own
words:

"Prior to coming into range you could see their wings belching fire. All our
gunners were firing at max rate, but they kept on coming. At this point I knew
we were in for a real problem. The lead fighter rolled to the left and Split S
down some four or five lengths ahead of us. Sgt. Tucker (BT) shouted out ' He
almost took my guns with him!' The wingman to the right was either dead or
damned mad at us for bombing his airfield when he also rolled left for a split
S. His aircraft was perpendicular when he crashed into us between the number 3
engine and the fuselage. His nose section and propeller became unglued and
departed over the top of number 4, cutting a deep gash in the nacelle top whch
immediately poured forth a a big black stream of oil resembling a Texas oil
gusher into the air.

The crashing Fw. continued on down the fuselage, embedding one of his 20MM guns
in our bomb bay and part of his fuselage lodged in our aircraft...Sgt. Budzik
(RWG) was holding his gun when the Fw hit the barrel. He repoted the shock was
so great that it threw him to the floor. The Fw's progress knocked the dorsal
fin out of alignment and heavily damaged the right horizontal stabilizer....the
FW left the scene in an un-controlled cartwheel -- that's the hard way to
knock down one of Jerry's fighters, and is not recommended for longevity for
bomber crews!

Due to the impact "TS" was in a dead stall. Acting on reflex, Eddie and I
rammed the yokes forward to their full extent and pushed the throttles forward
for maximum power. Then it was time for a little prayer to see if TS would
would either fly or fall off on one wing into an irretrieveable stall or
spin...As the group began to fade into the distance and we were letting down at
500 ft a minute to maintain flying speed, 'Smitty' (Lt. Marvin Smith,
naviagtor) came up from below to report that all was okay and that the nearest
base was Manston. We could see the Channel when to our surprise and bad luck we
flew over a flak battery, and big black smoke-puffs appeared all 'round. We
received a number of hits, happily none direct; evasive action was very limited
due to TS' condition. After running out of range (we later counted over 1000
holes in TS) we were sure nothing else could happen, although we were flying on
a wing and a prayer.. In this we were soon proved wrong!

O'Donnell, on hs second return from the rear, called in German fighters. When
asked if he thought they would attack the question was answered a moment later
when a 20MM exploded under Eddie's seat."

Whatever aircraft you happen to be crewing at the time. I loved my SLUF's and Vipers. Just can't get attached to the Warthog but maybe it's because I manage and dont crew these days.

If you're talking current, I still say the F-14 Tomcat was/still is (although stood down) the best fighter out there. If going back in time, the P-51 Mustang, the Super Marine Spitfire, the Zero the P-38 and yes even the ME (BF) 109 of WW II fame. Going back to WW I I'd have to say the Fokker-D Tri-plane.

Being prior Air Force I have a deep love for the B-52. That air frame is going to surpass 100 years of service, and the C-130 and all its variants will not be far behind. Who in their right mind can say anything bad about the A-10 and its kick ass take care of the ground-pounder's power! Having worked on the C-5 while I was in the Air Force, that air frame always has a special place in my heart and I still stop whatever I am doing when I hear one fly over. Damn thing should not even be able to get off the ground!

The Sailor in me, you have to love the F-14 Tomcat. The true multi-roll fighter.

The Medic in me has to agree with 1LT Sandy Annala and the Huey.

The historian in me likes the P-51 Mustang.

All of the above. Each one has a place in military history for doing jobs that other aircraft could do, but didn't with the effectiveness of those listed.
