Over some heavy duty lube sessions at the Club, some Seabees decided that the South Pole needed a Crystal Ball. "Someone" liberated a bowling ball from the 2-laner at McMurdo where it underwent what's now called a "makeover". Some ceramic and other dips finished by a chrome dip. The now precious commodity was placed in a plywood box for transport that had "Antarctic Crystal Ball Delivery Service" burned into it.

I was in my office when the Special Services Officer was pacing and griping about who'd want to steal a bowling ball. All the time he walked past the delivery box, slapping it on top. Gene couldn't figure out what kind of fit I was holding in.

The rest is history. I think the ball was replaced later on by a larger, more commercial product. I did grab a period photo off the web as I can't scan a Kodachrome.

Funny thing. People will run around it thinking they ran around the world. The real South Pole is some distance away as the station is on a moving ice field that moves around 40 feet per year give or take. We'd resurvey the moving pole every year. Silly visitors. Some of us OAEs (Old Antarctic Explorers) were known to join the 300 Degree Club by cooking up in the sauna and running around the pole in our skivvies. After all you didn't want to get frostbite on the important pole.

Now the "incident" about gassing the XO down there with nitrous oxide will have to wait for cigars and cognac on my porch. I had it cut from my medium long length short according to Navy regulation. My brothers said they'd respect a female with a shaved head because they wouldn't worry about how it looked.
