If we all do this, we all get better quick!
After the low hanging fruit, look for those longer term issues that need to be addressed and make a plan to get 'er dun! Basically be the mentor WE need and be the leader we want to follow. something is lacking... It exists, and has a profound effect on everyone down the CoC. When I refer to toxic leadership, I am talking about ALL levels. We have to start with ourselves and ensure we are producing that outstanding leadership that will help shape today's Army. Then we police our battles. Seems like people are so focused on gaining the next rank without mastering the rank that they have now. As leaders we have to ensure that we are promoting based off of the Soldier's potential to lead and not because there is a friendship outside of work. As leaders it's our job to build that Soldier up for the rank, if we don't we are not only failing that Soldier but the future of our Army. Toxic leadership doesn't just start overnight it's years of not receiving that outstanding leadership that we are suppose to be providing. After 23 years of watching this craziness, I believe WE ALL NEED TO DEFEND OUR SISTERS AS IF THEY WERE OUR SISTERS!!!
How is it that we have people in our Unit, Platoon, Squad still sexually harassing, assaulting, raping our sisters and feeling as if it's okay? Even if I gave an excuse for Mental illness/sexual predatory nature, that would not account for 50% of the cases! So this tells me that someone is creating an environment where this behavior is considered acceptable.
When I was Infantry, I did not get to see this as clear because we pretty much had no women. When I switched my MOS and was a Squad leader for Admin folk, I put it out there straight up! Touch someone on my team and you would be thanking God that the MP's/Police came and got you from the unit by the time we were done with you. Same happened as a Platoon Sergeant and then Acting First Sergeant. Apparently nothing has worked for these troops who think its okay to take advantage of people which tells me that the patented Throat Punch will be in my arsenal until I retire.
Take care of our Sisters in 2015! Change those environments in which someone even thinks it's okay to treat them in a way that is disrespectful. We owe this to EVERYONE who serves. The trucks, tools or gear, take pride in what you do. It's not just a paycheck. I encourage going on a deployment I loved every cold/hot day I spent this year cause I was proud of myself for getting that far. Talk to everyone like you've know them all your life because help from a stranger may fall in your lap. Remember nothing is owed to you, do your best every day regardless.
