My grandfather served in the Navy (and my grandmother was a riveter) during WWII. My grandfather had a newspaper clipping with this iconic photo on the front page framed on his end table by his recliner for as long as I can remember. This morning when walking into the DFAC here in Kuwait it was the cover photo for Stars and Stripes and I got a little nostalgic. This image has always inspired me. I knew at a very young age that I was going to join the military.
