In the Navy at least, one is usually given the option of either not making the deployment or extending their enlistment to make it to the end of the deployment. But I've seen it handled a few ways:

1) Juggle the person to a different unit so that their schedules line up better.
2) They don't deploy (on that specific deployment)
3) Extend or reenlist to complete the deployment
4) Depending on where you are at, they ship you back early to complete transition and terminal leave.

Big Army. Generally speaking, they know what they are doing. If it looks like your ETS/EAS is in the middle of an upcoming deployment, inform your chain of command, immediately. They may already have a plan for you, and it hasn't made it down yet, or it might be an oversight and they NEED to make a plan (which will make you look like a forward thinker). Win both ways. If they were currently deployed and getting close, an order for Stop-Loss would be placed on him/her allowing her to finish the deployment and be giving the time to complete ACAP.
