What happened on March 5 during the U.S. Civil War?

On this day in the US Civil War there were some engagements such as at Unionville, Tennessee 1863 and ongoing campaigns in Virginia and the Carolinas in 1864. The fact that the Confederacy ordered all vessels to give half freight capacity to government shipments in 1864 indicates the northern blockade was having an impact. It is sad that in 1867 Alexandria, VA rejected thousands of negro votes.

As far as I am concerned the most significant event which happened on March 5 in the civil war the Confederate government ordered all vessels to give half freight capacity to government shipments. They must have realized that their internal lines of communications were being constricted an interdicted to some degree. I was saddened to learn that the City of Alexandra, which is just across the Potomac river from Washington, D.C., rejected each of the thousands of votes cast by Negroes in the city election. This was in defiance of the universal suffrage granted under the Reconstruction Act.
