Two campaigns were being fought out in the south as well in Virginia and the Carolinas. March 4 was the day the POTUS was inaugurated in 1861 and 1865 for Abraham Lincoln and 1869 for Ulysses S. Grant. Seven years prior US Grant had been relived of command over a communication failure. http://www.civilwar.org/education/history/faq/

Civil War Facts

Facts relating to the American Civil War, the Civil War Trust and battlefield preservation. S. Grant came as close to career dissipation as one can get while having an exemplary career. I think that proves the Lord's guidance & providential direction on the man. "The election of 1860 was one of the most unusual in American history. In a four-way race brought on by a split in the Democratic Party, Abraham Lincoln's name did not even appear on the ballot in most Southern states. In the electoral college, Lincoln solidly carried the free states of the Northeast and Northwest. Breckenridge won the slaveholding states, with the exception of Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky in the Upper South, which went to Bell. Douglas, though he made a solid showing in the popular vote, only took electoral votes from Missouri and New Jersey." Despite this Lincoln was elected to two terms in office. The election of US Grant in 1869 was also providential since he was elected within 4 years of the ending of the bloody civil war which had divided this nation. LTC Stephen F. The inauguration of Lincoln to term two and both the inauguration and Relief of command for USG I would put as highest, but overall today is definitely an all of the above day.
