Battles, and even wars, matter only inasmuch as they have a lasting effect on the nation(s) involved, whereas a new state joining the union redefines the nation itself. It wasn't like the war for independence where we were fighting for freedom from rule across the whale trail. Brothers fighting brothers, families destroyed, and a nation torn in half. So I chose all of the above. To me the most significant aspect of March 1 in the Civil war was that countless Soldiers and civilians from both north and south died of their wounds. Second to me is the fact Union prisoners were being sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia which had recently opened.
