You probably are referring to being grandfathered into the GI Bill. To be grandfathered means that's something retroactively applies to you. For instance, the post 911 GI Bill applies to everyone who served after September 11th. But, it wasn't created until several years later. Everyone who served after September 11th and before the post 9/11 GI Bill was created was grandfathered into the post 9/11 GI Bill.
