You probably are referring to being grandfathered into the GI Bill. To be grandfathered means that&#39;s something retroactively applies to you. For instance, the post 911 GI Bill applies to everyone who served after September 11th. But, it wasn&#39;t created until several years later. Everyone who served after September 11th and before the post 9/11 GI Bill was created was grandfathered into the post 9/11 GI Bill.
