SPC John Canning, GEN George Patton had his own ideas regarding practice/tactics, and for the most part, he was quite successful. Some of his better known quotes are:
"Fixed fortifications are monuments to man's stupidity."
"Some goddamn fool once said that flanks have got to be secure. Since then sonofabitches all over the globe have been guarding their flanks. I don't agree with that. My flanks are something for the enemy to worry about, not me. Before he finds out where my flanks are, I'll be cutting the bastard's throat."

wrong wrong wrong.... :) It is decentralized military control that is confusing to them. They can't understand how can one achieve a military's goal without telling them how to achieve it. It may seem normal to us, for them is like, they are in chaos!!! There isn't any control at all!!!

That is the different then ... now? I don't know.

Very much of war is unpredictable, therefore, we understand flexibility is needed as long as actions meet Commander's Intent. The enemy and terrain will bring uncertainty. Commanders intent allows us in bad wars to transfer the objectives to all the soldiers as the chain of command becomes decimated.
