What do you think of the Sec of Defence and the Sec of The Army wanting to change the names of 10 Army posts in Louisiana, Georgia and Virginia just because they are named for Confederate soldiers?

Have you considered this is not the first time this has been discussed. This discussion comes up every time we go through this situation. Has it happened yet? No. Will it ever happen, probably not.

As long as the training facilities and equipment are still present, it's tough to care what it says on the sign out front.

It would cost an enormous amount of money to change names and it would have to be appropriated through Congress. Really, it’s a fine gesture, but it’s not Entirely their call.

When I was a young Lieutenant I used to wonder why we had army posts named after confederate soldiers, but then I was from California (not a Yankee and not a Southerner) and had no idea that the Civil War was not really over yet. ;)

If we are going to pay millions of DOD dollars to make these changes, I think we should look at it a bit different. Instead of these people fighting to keep slavery or protect states rights, lets look at them as leaders. Robert E. Lee took the Army of Northern Virginia into northern territory looking for a major win, made Picket's Charge over 1.5miles under heavy artillery barrage (and against Longstreet's recommendation), and lost not only the battle but the war. From a leadership standpoint, we put statues up and named a fort after Lee because?

If this goes through, we should name them after the animal life local to the installation OR an animal that represents the missions of prominent units at the base.
Fort Wainwright = Fort Kodiak
Fort Rucker = Fort Mustang
Fort Huachuca = Fort Rattler
Fort Drum = Fort Yeti
etc...

Unfortunately, no matter what side one takes on this topic it will be considered political or racist. I believe that Service Members should avoid such discussion in open forum, as their responses can be seen and shared. As a retiree I keep that same mentality as it served me well my entire adult life.

Loose sight of your past. You will never learn from your mistakes. I really don't see the problem. Most of those low life's don't even know who they are and their place in our history. I know they don't teach this history day cares a..k.a. Public schools.
