The good news: Officials have the money for the long-awaited reboot of dress whites and dress blues.

The bad news: The money isn't available until 2016.

Money problems and a decision to roll-out new women's jumper-style dress blues in tandem with the men's have delayed the roll-out by a year for service dress blues; service dress whites will be delayed for two years.

Men and women, E-6 and below, will be able to buy the service dress blues at the Navy Exchange in early 2016, said Capt. Janet Bristol, head of the Uniform Matters Office. The uniforms are likely to be issued to recruits beginning Oct. 1, 2016, the start of fiscal year 2017. Funding for the crackerjack whites is earmarked for fiscal 2017.

"We are definitely going forward with it," she said in a recent interview. "We are still formalizing some of our final decisions on the timing and rollout schedule, but the funding is in place, the uniforms will be coming and I think the sailors will enjoy the new features."

The dress blues sport sure-to-be popular updates like a front zipper on the trousers that renders the 13 buttons purely decorative, and a side zipper on the blouse. The dress whites are set for the largest redesign in decades and will have tailored cuffs and piping that matches the blues. But not all changes are being well-received: Many female sailors complain that the "Dixie cup" is easily stained by makeup and doesn't fit hair buns.

I was one of "those sailors" that petitioned the SecNav to get our crackerjacks back in the first place. I put my "special order" in the very day we were authorized. Crackerjacks beat the hell out of any uniform the Navy had at the time, and even today. I hated looking like a milkman or some assinine version of the Air Force. Frankly, the current "uniform" - the digital baby blues - well, they suck dog balls and I've informed any and all that bring up the subject on that piss-poor choice of uniform for our sailors. We are not, in general, a ground force, so I don't particularly care if our sailors look the same as the Army or Marines. We are sailors - we go to sea in ships - and ships are meant to go in harm's way without the support of the Army. Give me a few good Sea Corporals to place stategically in the yardarms and weigh anchor.

It is about damned time. Their was absolutely nothing dress or classy about the dress whites. They looked more like something a painting contractor would wear than a military dress uniform. I always liked the dress blues. I thought that they looked sharp despite the thirteen buttons being a pain in the, well crotch. I am glad that the Navy has decided to make the dress white look similar to the dress blue. From the photos I have seen, it actually looks pretty sharp.

Yeah, I agree with the poll results: if this is what's highest on Big Navy's list of things to do, we need a major re-prioritization.

So this would supersede both SDB and SDW for E-6 and below? If it reduces the amount of gear we have to haul on deployment, then maybe it's worth looking into.

Personally, the one I wish they'd ditch summarily is that horrid Type I (blue camo).

It seems like every Master Chief of the Navy nowadays along with every CNO decides that the highest priority thing for them to do is put their name on a uniform change. Uniform changes have a serious impact on the deckplate sailors and officers and should not be changed every time we get some new leadership in the pentagon - this latest change takes it back to what it was some time before I joined the Navy back in 1961 (and that is probably a good thing except it is perceived as yet another uniform change). The, so called, Cracker Jack uniform was the Navy standard for enlisted for many many years along with the plain old dungaree working uniform. The crazy notion to put our sailors in some sort of weird blue camouflage uniform as a working uniform is just that (crazy). Camouflage uniforms have a purpose and that purpose is not sailing around the oceans on ships and submarines. Now that is a uniform that needs to be brought back to reality if the MCPON and CNO just can't let themselves leave the uniforms alone.

I started out wearing the crackerjack. The 13 button pant was frequently a matter of joking how few you had to pop to do your thing. It was a useful uniform because in the day, your personal space was a flat locker under your bunk or a square box on the deck below 3 bunks. You couldn't hang anything. The inside creases on the uniform were there for a reason. Blues were made out of wool and ironing wool gives it an uneven glazed surface. Hence you turned the uniform inside out to press it. Whites looked better that way too. It looks like no inside creases on the new uniform.

One thing the crackerjacks will do is highlight the pudgy sailors. The side zipper will become a shiny streak of shame.

Too little is discussed about the material the uniform is made of. Navy BDUs have a habit of turning orange with sea water. The "Certified Navy Twill" was extremely flammable and uncomfortable. The cotton dungarees were wonderful with the poly whatever jumpers after that a disaster. I was always amazed how out of touch the uniform board is on some of their decisions. I do recall a former member of the uniform board retired and happened to start working for the major company that manufactured the CNT fabric. Another poster child reason for post service employment restrictions.

I think these look sharp and wish they would have made this change while I was still enlisted. Instead, they got rid of my comfortable dungarees and replaced them with a gas station attendant uniform.... only to replace them with our new digi-blueberry flambes (knock on the burning robustly characteristic of our current working uniform).

In all honesty I do like the redesign but if memory serves me, isn't this just a reboot from the 1930's or 1940's?
I never really cared for the way the Crackerjack uniform fit and those 13 friggin buttons are a pain to deal with but overall it is a unique uniform and when wearing it no one can mistake you for someone in another branch of service.
The money they spend on uniform revisions is just plain stupid. I guess some retire flag officer or O-5/O-6 got a job with the uniform company and will get a huge commission on this uniform.
As with all the uniform changes of the past I doubt any real surveys were taken of real sailors, just those in Washington DC.

Big navy is going to do what big navy is going to do... But seriously, I'm really tired of updating my sea bag with new uniforms that were just fine the way they were. If they would address real uniform issues, that would be different. Ditching the Utilities was fine; I wasn't too keen on looking like a gas station attendant. But the NWU material is too heavy in the summer. Dress whites attract stains like a Dyson. Blues take 10 minutes to take off, and I'm tired of hitting the piping with Shout. The NSU (black/tans) are absolutely atrocious... I'd take the Johnny Cash's back in a heartbeat.

Official request: NO MORE NEW UNIFORMS FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS. AND THEN, ONLY CHANGES TO MAKE WHAT WE HAVE BETTER.

I'm confused. I admit I am not Navy, and have been far removed from anything to do with the military for a few years. That being said, I have a friend who is currently AD Navy and he has posted pictures on FB and is in white cracker jacks as recently as 2014. The only difference I can see between what he is wearing is the cuffs on the shirt/coat/blouse, what ever it is officially called in the Navy.
Regardless, I like them. They look tons better than the blue digital thing being worn now.

I'm not sure if this is the intent of the question SPC Allbright. If it is, then I agree that there should be bigger fish to fry. ALL the services seem to think we all need to be able to sneak around in ANY environment with one uniform. How much do we need to spend to blend in on a ship? Haze gray and under way gray would work better than the blue the Navy uses for its uniform. LOL :-)

Ok we are putting more money toward uniforms yet again, but no SRB's for most rates, cuts in bah and bas, cuts in manning, cuts all across the board but we are spending money on uniforms, let's stay with what we have and keep advancing are force in what we can do, not by how we look.

While I didn't love all of the uniforms as an enlisted sailor, I feel that there are so many more pressing issues to handle, such as improving the civilian equivalency certifications for various ratings and specialties, updating and renovating barracks, and other quality of life issues. While this change may (or may not) improve recruiting and retention, it does nothing to improve readiness or quality of life (these uniforms are worn seldom by most sailors).

Everything new is old. Pre WW2 saw dress whites but the flap was all blue. Of course there were undress whites - no cuffs and nothing on the flap. Simple now one winter dress and one summer dress uniform. the new non rate to PO1 Kayki/black pants looks sharp. being a SCPO (E8) did not like the idea at first they kinda grow on you. The only uniform that looks stupid are the blueberries. Should do to a working uniform like the new Royal Navy's. Simple with button on front rank badge. Also all sailors E1-e6 should wear the same cover and the same for E7 - O10. Less in the seabag is bettere.

When the white version of the Crackerjacks was brought back, all I heard were groans. It was and is an ugly uniform, pajama-like and was the undress version of these whites. This is a good step forward in keeping with some of the traditions of the Navy, and doing a bit of updating to make them more user friendly. As to the colors? There is no uniform of this kind, regardless of branch that doesn't show dirt of some kind. Its up to leadership to know when they may be inappropriate for wear. Overall a good move for the Navy to make and long overdue.

I was part of the change in the 70's and got out just as they reinstated the original uniform. I like the new whites but I wish the Navy would stay within the guidelines of the traditional uniform design and stop trying to imitate the other branches.

I always thought the white jumper was too bland. There still isn't much color, but the addition of the piping makes it look nicer.

As for the SDB, it does not appear that any changes were made to the outward appearance. The changes they made actually corrected the issues I found annoying about them.

I would actually like it if they returned to the "Donald Duck" hats for the SDB, which would also remove the main concern that the females had about the dixie cup hat.

I too like the Crackerjacks. During my time in the navy Admiral Zumwalt had done away with them. Rumor has it, it was because his wife thought all sailors should wear the officer dress... not sure, if that is fact or fiction. I prefer Crackerjacks.

While it would be nice to have just one dress uniform to lighten the load of the sea bag, this change of adding the piping to the whites should have been done along time ago. The old whites were nothing more than a white pajama costume in the form of a uniform. Though I much prefer the whites (more comfortable to wear) over the blues. These updates with the piping on the whites, adding a zipper for an easier time putting them on along with the 13 buttons of doom becoming cosmetic are a good change for once to our uniforms. Now if only they would "issue the two sets of crackerjack whites" instead of making existing sailors pay for them, that would be nice.

I always hated the crackerjacks on the women. But tradition being what it is, I am not a fan of altering the uniform. It is the way it is often for reasons of functionality. Women should be able to wear a uniform, and still appear to be feminine and professional. Cracker jacks, are just a big balloons which are very unflattering to women. But men look great in them!

I don't hate them, but I do dislike them. Summer whites are supposed to breathe better - closing the cuffs and adding more material on the chest will only make them warmer. Yes, they LOOK nicer, but they won't be as comfortable for our Sailors.

When I joined we had the "one Navy" look. In other words we all wore suit and tie style uniform for dress blues. No crackerjacks. Just before I got out I was onboard the USS San Francisco (SSN-711) and the Navy went back to crackerjacks. Well, for fleet week in San Fran we were invited. So, since it was winter time in SF, I had to go buy the new dress blue crackerjack uniform. Since I was over 12 years and had been a good boy I had to wear gold on my sleeve instead of red. That one uniform cost around $600. I wore it once.

I say STOP messing with the uniform. Just leave it be.

I would prefer that the Brass improved on equipment & training for our sailors! Spend time on the training in the Navy being top notch & sought after in the Civilian world so our Veterans don't have to look for careers but rather careers are seeking them! The uniforms are fine the way they are period.

They are taking away from an iconic uniform. Plus my favorite part was the sleeves and how they were open and freeing. Now they are going to have the "blues" style cuffs. Not a fan.

While the new uniform looks sharper than the current ones, it is not necessary. I'd rather have SRB's back and other incentives rather than a good photo opportunity. On anothwe note, I do not like the new "gender neutral" look that is leaning to the will of society and all the perversion that comes along with it. We are men and women of the Navy and should look the part as well. If you want us to look alike, then have us get the same PT standards. I do think it's bogus that an 18 year old female has to do her PRT run in the same time as a much older male.

Are the new ones mandatory if you prefer the older style and will there be an option to trade in your old for a new uniform?

I do like them. But (1) I'm sure sailors families could use the money used to purchase new uniforms, as the allowance doesn't cover it. (2) I'm sure someone could spend their time more wisely than change for changes, and or styles sake.

Like a few other responders here I have seen a few uniform changes during the years I was in (1966-1996). My real regret was not being issued and being allowed to wear a Flat Hat since I joined after it was phased out. My SDB (Service Dress Blues) were 100% WOOL and OMG they itched and so did the Undress versions. I had to get them lined at my own expense. Whites were just like today's whites, but 100% Cotton. Dungarees - everyone loved them for work, but we could only wear then for dirty work in port or at sea (The Navy was ashamed of that uniform or maybe it was that we worked). Summer or Winter if you wanted to eat after 1600, you wore the Undress or Dress Uniform of the Day.

Admiral Zumwalt had what many thought was a good idea, one uniform from E-1 to O-MG and it lasted for longer than many thought. Supposedly there was a deck plates survey and the response was overwhelming to go back to Crackerjacks. I never met anyone who was involved in the survey though, if you were, please say so. Some great uniforms were in for a short time, Salt and Pepper was one I think should have been retained for ALL HANDS! (Tropical White Shirt and Black pants.)

This version of the SDW (Service Dress White) looks like the negative of the SDB and I think it is Sharpe. It does not have the Blue Cuffs like the Sailors of pre WWI (sand Pebbles), but is very good looking and may be one we keep. SDB with the Zippers, heck of a good idea. My real concern for both uniforms is materials used. Is it Shipboard safe? IS it easy to maintain? Is it durable? Replacement Cost?

Women's Issues: Combination Cap Vs Dixie Cup. Sailor or Stewardess, ladies one is a Sailors hat and the other is not. If you wear the Service Dress Uniform then you need to look like a Sailor. Hats and makeup might take some work, but once you get used to them, it might not be that big an issue. Some comments were made that some of you were afraid that you might look like men. Seriously, if you look like a man in Crackerjacks there is something seriously wrong with your tailor. I am not trying to be a sexist, but ladies there is a difference and this uniform will not HIDE it.

You really can't fix an already "ugly uniform"! I hated wearing Crackerjack Blues and/or whites when I was active duty! And that awful white hat! Geez, give me a break! So GLAD I'm retired! Can you please have some style...... I spent four years in the Marine Corps and then joined the Navy. Marine uniforms look AWESOME, but the Navy's well not so much........Just say'in........

It never seems to fail. The government did not learn from history and is repeating its self. The "Crackerjack" uniform was the single best thing about being enlisted. It was very well liked and easy to keep.

The new uniform looks good but one picture does not always tell the whole story. So far I would give it +++

Well, I lost my original comments about the uniform. So much for trying.

I like them. It seems again like the government has not learned from history that they are well on to planning a repeat. The "Crackerjack" was popular and one the best recruiting tools going. It was easy to care for and very popular.

Listen up mates! a swabbie aint no swabbie without their crackerjacks. Back in the '70's Zumwalt us to be icecream sailors (at least that is how i felt.) took away my dixie cups and my cracker jacker jacks for a double breasted jacket and a frisbie with a bill. I kept my blues nad i'm glad to see the summer dress uniform is changing too. Welcome back cracker jack kid.

Everything old is new again. My father wore dress white jumpers similar to the ones that you see in the pics here when he was in the Navy during WWII and Korea. I, for one, am glad to see the Navy going back to the whites with piping. Those polyester things that I wore throughout my Navy career were so uncomfortable and with no piping looked ridiculous!

Navy is putting people out because of PTS and all that other rot, not to mention the military budget is always ripe for downsizing.

Ships are undermanned, deployments getting extended, need I go on?

But yet the Navy decides that every single uniform needs to be replaced every few years.

Please nobody give me that garbage "that's what your uniform allowance is for..." You know full well that thing NEVER covers the full cost of new uniforms.

They have a "lazy" button for the dress blues. It is non traditional to un-button a single button when shipmates are out getting $h17faced! They need to honor the 13 button "salute" like the rest of us did.

Here we go again. I joined in 1958 and we had sailor uniforms. We dressed like sailors, acted like sailors, and did sailor things. My old guy opinion is: too many uniform changes, blue cameos(?), stupid idea, khaki shirt and black trousers, stupid idea. When I joined, I wanted to look like a sailor, not a soldier or a Marine. Maybe this is a good idea. What happens to all the other uniforms?

well the line trims on the whites seems to be going back, I could be mistaken, but I thought it was on the uniforms maybe in the WWII timeframe. I had wanted to be able to wear cracker jacks for the women the entire time I was in. I felt like a stewardess in our Navy Blue and could not understand why that uniform could not be the same when every other single uniform was exactly the same. Cracker jacks to me are the epitome of the Navy and Navy heritage. Now as the buttons on the front well that symbolizes more tradition and heritage and hate to see it disappear, I hope they keep a flap in front with the buttons and hide the zipper, for appearance sake.

I like them but think that the Navy should find a uniform that will last 20 years and explore each generation style and function for the period. The basic Officer/CPO uniform has held up for several generations giving exception the cloth but the appearance has held.

They seem to have a "traditional" type look to them. I like them. They look crisp and clean and certainly separate the enlisted men from the officers uniform. I wore the "monkey suit" when I was in although I had the option to have worn the new "Chief Looking" uniform. My brother and I went in at the same time and he wore the new type. (I went in Sept 72). I would have proudly worn this uniform.

They are a much better uniform change than the digital camouflage which looks just plain stupid. This hearkens back to the days of the WWII sailor which is appropriate.

I will say this, while I do like them, and they do solve a lot of the gripes I had with my old dress blues, I still think new sailors should have to experience what it is like to have to go to the bathroom and mess with thirteen buttons...

The phrase anything old is new again seem appropriate. They look like the WW2 uniforms. Pick a uniform then leave it alone. I am quite sure we have more important things we could use the money we waste studying, testing, wear testing and advertising about uniforms. Not to mention the savings that could be seen by doing away with the people on the uniform board.

It not a bad uniform but neither is the current whites used for years. But why spend the money just for a very superficial enhancement? It looks like a dress blue picture seen on a photographic negative. The services all change uniforms both field and dress way too much with the only exception of the Marine Corps dress uniforms. The Navy probably has the most different uniform combinations.

After all these years, we still cant seem to get the big picture? Stay focused on the real issues confronting the current force ie: spare parts/repair parts to keep us mission ready! The funding to keep our most valued asset Sailors, reenlisting (SRB) and levels to a standard befitting the state of the current economy.

We don't need more uniform changes, they've done a pretty damn good job of screwing them up so far. There is no more distinction towards the branch ie: Petty Officer First Class to Chief Petty Officer that has been lost indefinitely. I believe there are more important issues in front of the services as a whole, not just the United States Navy.

Lets focus on how we can create a better evaluation system, which actually helps the junior enlisted/Officer to show how they've improved since last advancement and are ready for increased responsibility. We in the Senior Enlisted/ leadership community bare a huge responsibility to mentor and help them grow these young people so they can take on our role when we retire.

I've gotten off the topic, since it's non relevant and there is more to focus on in todays "Navy". So my direct answer to the question is "Hell No" and yes I was proud to have worn my standard issue as well as my tailor made "gabs" from Hong Kong with liberty cuffs. In addition to comments on our Dixie cup head gear, if prepped and worn correctly the crispness of your attire coupled with your personal pride uniform will stand out in the fore front for all to emulate !

I love traditions, if I had my way we would have the stand up collar on the army blues. However, back to the subject, crackerjacks, I like the crackerjacks because they are a tradition, but, of course, I leave it to the Navy and the sailors to decide.

I wonder will these be made out of a different material so you don't have to buy a new uniform every time you stand watch?I know in my time as petty officer of the watch while armed with M9 it would stain my pants every time(the holster for the weapon) and as far as the cover is concerned those need to be revised to a different material as well due to the same issue.

The tailored cuffs lend a nicer fit to the uniform, bringing the whites closer to the fit and finish of the blues. The piping is a reminder of our naval heritage.

The tradeoff may be cooling - the looser sleeves of the current white jumper lend themselves to air flow, versus the fitted sleeves of the blues.

Heck, it's the military - drink more water.

Dress blues in white. Keep the crackerjacks as they have been and "play" with the work uniforms. Just not the dungaree jumper we once had that melted to you when it was around fire. Not a good choice.

Like the uniform but I hope they stop changing every couple of years their are a lot of better ways to spend the money, just stop wasting money and take care of the sailors. I also hope that the new uniforms are being made in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

I think the piping on the sleeve's and back break up the all white uniform top. It gives it more of a dress look, like the dress blues.

Don't see much of a change. I like them. I was one of those that petitioned for their return but as an alternate uniform. A romantic of sorts. I don't think any of us were fond of the Good Humor Man Uniform that we had in 1976 when I signed onboard.

End the fashion show and put the brain power, time and money into the job we are supposed to be doing, a.k.a., war fighting. The Marines and Seabees are using a variation on the AR-15 developed in the late '60s. Think about the real needs not recruitment posters and parades.

Sort of My late 2022 response to Your 2015 Post. My Dad was Navy and the old enlisted cracker jack uniform were very distinctive and could never be mistaken for any other uniform. Its something that should NOT be changed and keep with the tradition and retention of Navel heritage and History. The Marines Seem to have been the best with hanging onto that heritage of their uniforms without changes and that includes both the Army and Air Force that have made too many changes. The Navy for the most part had hung onto the traditional uniform which in my opinion didn't need any major changes and none much cared for it when they did and corrected that in the case of going back to and retaining the Navy jumper, Cracker Jack uniform. The picture Here is of My Dad in His Uniform when He was on active duty with the US Navy. My Dad is now 96 and was a WW2 Veteran in the Pacific and served during the Korean War also. He had spent 10 years in the US Navy,

I realize I was late to this party.

My wife and I were both on active duty. When women were issued crackerjacks, she hated them. She remembers the old Eisenhower jackets and that style of uniform. For me before becoming a Chief I liked the crackerjack as a dress uniform. I retired before the blue camos came out with, I thought were a good idea and better than dungarees.

Just thoughts. But the 3rd answer choice is more me.
