What do you think of the new Facebook 'Like' icons?

Facebook introduced the 'Like' button in 2009 and completely changed the way we socially connect and share our lives with friends and family. For many months I had heard talk that Facebook might introduce a 'dislike' button. Yesterday, I saw that there were several more options focused on emotions, rather than just a dislike. Do you think this is an improvement for social media or a step back?

I don't know that it was a "necessary improvement" but I do like them.

It is a step forward for the younger more tech-savvy users Capt Brandon Charters. I would be glad to see these options expended to FaceBook desktop version.
I have been lobbying for condolences, empathetic and sympathetic choices to be added to teh simple like choice.

Capt Brandon Charters I don't like the Wow! Icon and hmm well I think a exclamation mark would have been a better alternative than the one they picked. I don't have fb on my phone, looking at it on desktop. Are all those emotional responses necessary? It could be that I don't use FB enough to feel they are. I think Up down votes with optional comment are enough.

I LIKE them! Sometimes I want to do more than just like something. Say a person posts bad news ... I don't want to like it, but I want to "sympathize" it. The crying icon might be good for that. I agree with other folks: still need a dislike button, and these like options make the FB experience better.

I didn't even know this was happening until you pointed it out. I think for folks who like to respond to posts, it gives a bit more in the way of nuancing that response. Example: Someone announces the death of a family member. I always fell weird hitting the "like" button to those kinds of posts. Now being able to do a sad face, better conveys what I want I am feeling.

I've been using it. I like the new options. In referenced to the dislike option, One thing I was just thinking about yesterday with the RP Vote Down option. I've never seen anyone use that option on RP. I'm sure it would be used often on FB.

I like it and I agree with Facebook's aversion to the dislike button. It would turn every post into an upvote/downvote battle. If you crave that kind of system, there are already sites available that use it like reddit and RallyPoint. CW5 Private RallyPoint Member hit the nail on the head with the sympathy for bad news issue.

i like the extra emoticons...what i don't like yet, however, is how loud my Facebook mobile app for iPhone is now...it makes a loud obnoxious popping noise with every move I make...lol...as far as the dislike button goes; RP has a dislike button and I have never seen anyone dislike a comment or post on RP...and let's not start with this one just to prove a point :D. I used to think a dislike button was needed, but not liking a post is disliking it, right?

The problem that I have with it, is that in the past, if a thumbs up, wasn't appropriate a person had to comment. Even if the comment was a trite "so sorry" it was communication and interaction. I believe the new setup is an invitation to just scroll and click.

This shows how much i care about facebook. I had no idea that you had new options for a "like" button.
