What do you think of the Israeli attack on the U.S.S. Library? I think MANY heads should have, and if they are still alive be punished!

There are many theories about why Israel attacked the USS Liberty . . . and whether the attack was intentional . . .

The USS Liberty was a US intelligence collection asset. Because of the nature of our alliances in the Middle East at the time, Israel could not trust it as a neutral observer in it's preemptive attacks related to what they believed were overly aggressive maneuvers conducted by it's neighbors.
There was a reason for the attack and a reason why the US Government at the time was willing to accept the half baked apology for the "accident".
And there are plenty of reasons other than this why heads in the LBJ administration should have rolled.

The Israelis were threatening to expose the asset and the tech it was using. LBJ thought it the better part of valor to let it go rather than risk losing political ground on the foreign relations department in the middle east. The middle-east initiating an oil embargo against the US during that time would have been catastrophic to our industry.

USS Liberty was a spy ship in the vein of Soviet trawlers of that period. A profusion of antenna is always a give away on any ship, vehicle or building of dedicated intelligence gathering. It displayed upwards of 40.
At the time I read a few accounts and most of the books and other sources afterwards. The Wiki entry seems to have some new information that supports my conclusions.
I believe before and during the attack, it was an Israeli OPSEC mission. After the attack a US OPSEC mission (cover-up) SIGINT is a powerful nest of snakes. More so than many would believe.

I'm no expert on history but,... the Israelis attacked the ship knowing full well it was an American ship, and further more the L.B.J. administration cared more about his bid for re-election than American lives.

PO2 (Join to see) I am not entirely sure of the dates, but I believe by this time LBJ had already come to the decision not to seek re-election sometime before advising the American people of his decision. Keep in mind that LBJ also had a mess in Vietnam to contend with, as well as the USS Pueblo capture and socialist dissent at home during this same period.
