What do you think of the Israeli attack on the U.S.S. Library? I think MANY heads should have, and if they are still alive be punished!

I'm no expert on history but,... the Israelis attacked the ship knowing full well it was an American ship, and further more the L.B.J. administration cared more about his bid for re-election than American lives.

The correct name of the ship is the USS Liberty.

The USS Liberty was a US intelligence collection asset. Because of the nature of our alliances in the Middle East at the time, Israel could not trust it as a neutral observer in it's preemptive attacks related to what they believed were overly aggressive maneuvers conducted by it's neighbors.
There was a reason for the attack and a reason why the US Government at the time was willing to accept the half baked apology for the "accident".
And there are plenty of reasons other than this why heads in the LBJ administration should have rolled.

USS Liberty was a spy ship in the vein of Soviet trawlers of that period. A profusion of antenna is always a give away on any ship, vehicle or building of dedicated intelligence gathering. It displayed upwards of 40.

At the time I read a few accounts and most of the books and other sources afterwards. The Wiki entry seems to have some new information that supports my conclusions.

I believe before and during the attack, it was an Israeli OPSEC mission. After the attack a US OPSEC mission (cover-up) SIGINT is a powerful nest of snakes. More so than many would believe.
